Would you go and eat in a restaurant where the last hygiene rating was 1?

We always wanted to try a local tapas restaurant but unfortunately they suffered the pressures of COVID and closed.

They reopened last month operating from the same kitchen as another restaurant that serve burgers, they have literally just linked up together and are now a hybrid of the two with one big menu. When the burger place was independent they were inspected about six months ago and given a 1 for food hygiene, which is major improvement necessary.

Since they have rebranded as a duo they are now awaiting inspection. I really want to try the tapas and know it’s a different owner, but they are operating from the exact same kitchen as the place with a previous bad rating and clearly the low rating didn’t deter them from joining up with them as business partners

Should we go somewhere else?

YABU - I would go and wouldn’t be bothered at all by this

YANBU - I‘d find somewhere else to go until they’ve been reinspected

No!

DancingLedgend · 23/06/2023 12:48

Hard nope.

Newtrix · 23/06/2023 12:49

Not a chance

Greenqueen40 · 23/06/2023 12:50

Ugggg no!

SBAM · 23/06/2023 12:51

I’d read the report first - sometimes a low rating is because of physical limitations of the building, like location of something relative to something else. If it’s because they weren’t following proper hygiene protocols then absolutely steer clear.

buonnatale · 23/06/2023 12:51

No.

Enfys1982 · 23/06/2023 12:51

No I wouldn’t. 4 stars can just been down to shoddy paper work, but 1 star Is probably filthy dirty as well. It’s actually not difficult to get 5 stars and I wouldn’t eat anything for anywhere with less than 4 stars.

Forestdweller11 · 23/06/2023 12:52

No

IamstilltheWalrus · 23/06/2023 12:52

100% No.

Can't say that I would be in rush to try a restaurant doing burgers/ tapas either frankly. Weird mix.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/06/2023 12:54

I might try it if all they served was deep fried vegetables. Otherwise no.

ManateeFair · 23/06/2023 12:54

In this situation I think I'd be inclined to wait for the new hygiene rating to come through. It's likely that the establishment has taken action to put right the issues in their kitchen, and I suspect teaming up with the tapas place is part of their fresh start along with that, but I'd err on the side of caution and wait.

ALongHardWinter · 23/06/2023 12:56

No way! A minimum of 3 for me.

I can’t actually find the report or rating online. I googled restaurant name and hygiene rating and on the results page, the first result was from the food standards agency saying 1 - major improvement necessary but once I clicked the link it said no results found. I think it’s been deleted as they’ve now reregistered as a joint establishment… but surely it’s still the same kitchen

No! Minimum of four always. Our local library is 5 rated and so cheap! There's no excuse.

Frabbits · 23/06/2023 13:00

Fuck no. You have to try really hard to get a 1, in terms of ignoring the most basic of hygiene standards.

soapysu · 23/06/2023 13:04

Update - I have contacted them and they have said it was due to paperwork issues but they’re working closely with the council and are going to be visited again soon

Not sure what to make of that!

No, and I'm fairly relaxed regarding hygiene. But even I have my standards!

Summerishere123 · 23/06/2023 13:08

I run a cafe and inspectors will give you a one if you don't do the paperwork. You could be sparkling clean and perfect in everyway but no paperwork = 1

Ooh, ok. Well I feel slightly better about it… maybe

A one rating is not just because of paperwork.

does your library have a coffee shop?

Just curious. We have a bookshop and a flower shop both with a coffee shop inside, it's great.

Stickybackplasticbear · 23/06/2023 13:11

Absolutely not. It's hot to be a 4 or 5 for me. But a vomiting bug could have a big impact due to precious surgery so I'm more careful. Having said that my partner hasn't had this surgery and feels the same!

Are you sure of this?

Yes, I doubt it would bother me.
You're exposed to all sorts without your knowledge all the time.
The state the toilets are left in at our local Morrisons - I often think to myself "Good god, these people are allowed to put their hands all over the fruit and veg!"

shivawn · 23/06/2023 13:16

I don't check hygiene ratings of restaurants when I'm popping out for a bite to eat so yes I probably would.
