Not really an AIBU but I’m at my wits end.

Live in a ground floor HA flat with 3 yo DD.
Small bathroom has been converted to wet room, but no other adaptions in the property.
This wet room is a disaster, it’s absolutely horrendous. In taking the bath out and rearranging cupboards for storage have been removed, the plug hole and shower is central in the room, the floor isn’t sloped enough and water is just pooling all over.
Its getting in small gaps behind the toilet and the sink, it’s rotted all skirting boards and nothing I do is stopping it. The join where the floor meets the tiling is rotted, there’s damp on my ceiling because the bathroom is constantly wet, I’ve got a water pipe behind the toilet which is black with mold and needs treating twice a week because I can’t get to it with the giant squeegee I bought.

Had my HA out today to measure for shower doors but the ones they’re putting in are for adaptations. I am not disabled so not a necessity. The door measurement they’ve taken goes around the slope parallel to the shower curtain and has blocked off 85% of my bathroom. I can’t get to the sink with these doors and imo the bathroom is nowhere near big enough for a wet room facility unless the sink is removed and replaced with one of those small sinks that hang off the wall.

Im repeatedly banging my head against the wall with this issue and it’s at the point where I’m barely using the shower, AIBU to see if I can get the whole wet room removed. It’s caused me nothing but stress and had I known how temperamental it is I would’ve turned down the property. Lived here 3 years.

Try contacting your local MP?

The design of the wet room doesn’t sound great, there’s not supposed to be wooden skirting boards in a bathroom for a start. It’s possible the room hasn’t been properly tanked.
Put your concerns in writing to your HA, keep a copy. Then look up who your local councillor is. Just Google who is my local councillor and your postcode. Get them onside and they should intervene on your behalf.

Not supposed to be wooden skirting in a wet room , of course it’s ok in a regular bathroom !

That was my thought too. It’s half tiled half not but the not tiled bit is wooden skirting and it’s just rotten completely

Contact Environmental Health at your local council.

Contact Environmental Health at your local council.

That’s a great idea. Get everyone you can onside, it really sounds to me that it’s not been built properly initially.

I would speak to Shelter too.

I had a walk in shower adaptation in both my last and current ha house. They were doing renovation in old house and initially refused to put a bath in, but I appealed and eventually they did. With current house they explained that they absolutely wouldn't change it, but if I paid for it I was welcome to change it. Is that a possible option for you?

Stressedafff · 22/06/2023 20:16

@Allmyghosts itd cost an absolute fortune as the showers in the wrong place, the floor would need redoing and levelling plus it needs new tiles and skirting. My cousin does bathrooms and he said we’d be talking at least 4k x

There must be lots of people desperate for a ground floor flat especially one with adaptations. Can you look to swap to an upstairs one that has a proper bathroom? Swaps are common where I live.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 23/06/2023 00:09

Shower trays are quite cheap <and you can often get them free from people who are getting rid of them - perhaps your cousin could help source one? i often see them in skips>
so in the short term you could place one directly above the drain-hole (along with a suspended frame designed to hang a shower curtain if you don't already have this).

This would stop the problem of water pooling all over the floor including the edges, and stop the skirting getting any worse.

Usually these trays are sealed to the surrounding floor with silicone sealant, and they often have a mortar foundation underneath. If you want to attach it using a method like this, it does mean causing some 'damage' to the floor, so it would be worth getting written permission from your HA first . If it's not costing them anything, and potentially prevents their housing stock from further damage, they may well be very happy to consent.

Does the bathroom have an extractor fan?
If it's not removing as much moisture from the air as it needs to, maybe you could borrow a dehumidifier (the HA may well have one they could lend you) to suck the damp out, and help you assess how rotten the skirting is/ how much needs replaced etc.
