I don't know which job to take..

Me again. I'm sorry I know I have another thread but I thought I'd add an update as I don't know if people can always see it in the comments.

I currently work in a stately home cafe - I do around 16 hours. £10.42 + 12.7% for holiday pay as it's a zero hour contract. I've got a few niggles.. they made everyone else almost it felt but me a "team leader" and they took 2 hours a week from me without asking me.
I work every single Sunday and have been told working a weekend day is part of the job, no way around it. I have a 6 year old and an 18 month old.
I take home around £650-£700 a month. Don't need to pay childcare as DH has her the Friday I work and he's home on the Sunday.

I've been offered a medical receptionist job. 13 hours - £10.47 an hour. Paid holidays and bank holidays, NHS pension, full training and chance to progress. I would have to pay childcare though as it's one evening and 2 mornings. Which would be about £80 from my wage and DH will pay the rest. So I would probably have around £400 a month to myself with this job.

I did a taster day and very much liked it. Liked the staff, like what I think the job will entail, liked the vibe.

I would get my Sundays back
It's travelling about 7 miles further, 3 times a week.
pension and chance to progress
Childcare needed
Harder work(?)

I don't know.. help me decide!

I would take the NHS job. You can bet they will offer you lots of extra hours to cover holiday and sickness.

Trinity69 · 22/06/2023 18:31

NHS job all day long. Good pension and an excellent employer.

Littlemunchkinsmummy · 22/06/2023 18:33

Congratulations on your new role 😊 I would take the role as it’s got contracted hours so has more security. It also has progression opportunities so better in the long run as well as the pension contribution. Sundays back sounds like a bonus! If you can make it work for you and your family then it will be a great role for you.

All the best with your decision and new position..

Take the medical receptionist job

schnauzerbeard · 22/06/2023 18:37

You're lucky you get the 12.7%, when I had a zero hour contract (this year!) I only got 10.7%

EllaRaines · 22/06/2023 18:40

The NHS job.

NuffSaidSam · 22/06/2023 19:13

The NHS job is clearly the better option.

Do you think £400 a month is manageable for things like days out, petrol, then things for myself.. clothes etc?

I agree with @FrogFairy and @Littlemunchkinsmummy that it’s not much money right now, but you’ll soon start earning at least as much as before, if not more money.

I think you need to rethink your approach to family finances so you both put everything in together, cover all expenses/savings and then halve what's left. See if it works in that context. Or start changing your DP for all the childcare you do.

ChopSuey2 · 22/06/2023 23:46

NHS job and get a bluelight card for savings on all sorts (asda, clothes, appliances, tiles...) so that will save a bit. There will be opportunities to upskill and progress. Even if you stay on the same band, you get a decent payrise every couple of years.

Hearti · 23/06/2023 00:15

Nhs job. The pension, career prospects, better future earnings and work life balance are important. If worried about cash you could easily just keep the Sunday shift for a wee while.

Trying2understand · 23/06/2023 03:43

NHS job and ask if you can keep the Sundays at the stately home cafe. You can drop the Sundays once you get more hours in medical reception.
