Help me pick a car! I’m useless!

Sorry shamelessly posting here for traffic as I’m going crazy looking at cars now and just can’t decide!

Looking for a used car ideally estate, SUV, MPV basically to suit a family of 2 adults, 2 kids (13 and 10years) 2 dogs, lab and cavapoo. Needs to last and be reliable.

We love spending days at the beach, lakes etc and also enjoy camping weekends so a huge boot would be ideal!

Budget is no more than 11.5k

I have seen a Ford Kuga in our price range and I LOVE it! It’s a 2015 with 75k miles - is this too many? I prefer high up car but DH (who will be driving it mainly prefers estates)

Can anybody please recommend a suitable car?

TIA 😃

Is it the 1.0 petrol engine? They are literally made of chocolate. Is ulez a consideration?

MandyMotherOfBrian · 21/06/2023 21:02

The answer to Which Car? is always ‘Honda CRV’. And certainly in your case. They’re like a Tardis. We used to get three Labradors in the boot of ours.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 21/06/2023 21:04

estate wise I’d go Octavia without a doubt. You’ve a good budget. It will get you a nice one, the DSG is a joy.

suv I’d look at a tiguan, sportage, xc60 or xc40. Volvo being the choice

Magenta65 · 21/06/2023 21:05

Partner has a diesel kuga (19 plate) be warned they’re fuel guzzlers and heavy on tyres but a lovely journey and spacious car. Somethings like an eco sport? Kia’s? Hondas too? Family members has a Hyundai Kona and loves it, quality in the Hondas are fab. Have heard a few people recently saying mokkas are an awful ride in the back so avoid

TheABC · 21/06/2023 21:07

We have a Ford S-Max. Easy to drive, massive boot and the back seats are big enough for adults to sit comfortably. We stuck a surfboard in there tonight, to take to the beach and go camping on a regular basis.

The only caveat is if you have a congestion charge zone nearby.

morethanspice · 21/06/2023 21:08

Recommend the Tiguan

EmmaDilemma5 · 21/06/2023 21:12

Have you looked at Mitsubishi Outlanders? Hybrid, smooth drive, lots of boot space.

I really like them, good solid car. However, New windscreens are £1000 and Mitsubishi in their current form are pulling out of the U.K. so residuals and parts may be a future issue.

Abouttimemum · 21/06/2023 21:16

I wouldn’t buy something 8 year old with 75k tbh, not if it’s for long term. 8yo with low mileage yes if it’s been well maintained.

We have a Peugeot 3008 (old shape) which we’ve had for 5 years and was 5 year old when we bought it. Excellent motor with a tailgate so easy access to the boot with loads of space. Nice drive too but doesn’t have some mod cons that come with newer vehicles.

TheMousePipes · 21/06/2023 21:20

I really like my Tucson. It has bags of space in the boot and is pretty good on fuel. Worth a look?

LadyJ2023 · 21/06/2023 21:21

Would never go for a Kuga did research when I needed one to much negatives. We got a mitsibushi asx and love the space etc

JayAlfredPrufrock · 21/06/2023 21:22

I too was going to say Hyundai Tucson.

I don’t love it as I downsized from an old Toyota Landcruiser that I adored. But if fits your spec as is a good car.

19lottie82 · 21/06/2023 21:23

that mileage is no problem. Just make sure it has a full service history

UnfortunateTypo · 21/06/2023 21:42

Volvo XC60 is a great car for all of that, the boot might be a bit small if you out the dogs in there (depends on their size), so look at the XC90 as well. I wouldn’t worry too much about the mileage as long as there is service history.

whenthelightsgoout · 21/06/2023 21:51

I have a Mazda cx5 which has a decent boot.

87SPD · 24/06/2023 14:01

Oh wow thanks so much for the responses, sorry it has only just alerted me to them for some reason!

We are worried about the miles to be honest, interesting hearing about the 3008 @Abouttimemum are these reliable? I have seen a lot going and like the look of them? x

Monster truck !😁

Lolapusht · 24/06/2023 14:14

Golf estate. Mine is a 2011 diesel with 128k on the clock, is worth around £900 and will not stop working! It was bought secondhand as a “mum car” when DC were young so it’s had everything split on it, transports bikes, double buggies, goes camping and does regular trips to the tip.

Took it for a service recently to try and find things to spend money on to keep it going and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I’ll be getting a new car when it finally goes which probably means around 2028!

TheFairyCaravan · 24/06/2023 14:22

I love my Tiguan.

We had a BMW 220D Active Tourer, which is an MPV, prior to this. That was lovely car too.

It will out live you. It will be legislated against before it dies. I’ve seen them on 200k+ still driving impeccably

Yes we’ve not had any trouble with ours at all

Summerscoming23 · 24/06/2023 20:49

Skoda octavia ? Big boot and spacious in the back

KirstenBlest · 24/06/2023 20:57

Mileage and age is not an issue if it has FSH and has had a new timing belt at the correct time. I'd look at a Honda CRV.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/06/2023 21:00

Honda Civic tourer. Massive boot. Very boring. Very reliable and ulez friendly.

WaitingfortheTardis · 24/06/2023 21:05

Another one agreeing the Tiguan is a great option.
