Has anyone seen this on Netflix?

How could this have been allowed to happen?
I cried through so much of this

I have known of similar stories of children with severe ME. (I have severe ME). It’s a scary, horrendous thing to happen to the child and parents.
One such case detailed here. https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Karina_Hansen

That's horrific. I came down with ME as a young teenager, after a virus. I am fortunate enough I didn't have to endure forced hospitalization like this poor lady did.

Flowers For you as I know how hard it is and mine was only moderate not severe.

www.thecut.com/article/child-abuse-munchausen-syndrome-by-proxy.html

Absolutely awful. The callous text exchanges between the staff , patting themselves on the back because they knew all along, when they knew fuck all is even worse. As were the bills for the disease she didn't have and accusations that Maya was making it up herself, but she still wasn't returned home.

TalkingPanda · 15/11/2023 04:44

I think the family have been awarded $211.00 million.

NutellaEllaElla · 15/11/2023 07:39

Wow I just googled it

Wow! They deserve it though

OP posts:
KT1995 · 15/11/2023 13:58

Yes, they do deserve it. 100%

But in a weird way, it makes it even worse doesnt it, that they were RIGHT, her mum was RIGHT and the callousness in which she was treated was so, so wrong. WHY did the hospital not see it at the time?
Utterly heartbreaking.

happinessischocolate · 15/11/2023 14:10

I watched this last night.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

So many things done wrong.

If they suspected Maya wasn't ill and was putting it on for attention why deprive her of her parents attention?

Although how a young child would invert her feet and show the the symptoms she did if she was putting it on I don't know.

Then when you think it can't get worse you have the judges and the cross examinations. And then finding out others have been through the same !!

I hope they get the money and use it to help others who have been falsely accused.

NutellaEllaElla · 15/11/2023 21:40

It does seem that she recovered without the ketamine therapy though.

Frequency · 15/11/2023 22:37

They explained in the docu and the court case that her recovery was longer and more painful than it would have been with ketamine therapy.

It's also not recovery, as such, she could relapse. She could also relapse with the ketamine but at least the recovery wouldn't take so long with the ketamine therapy.

It's an experimental treatment, so I understand why the hospital were wary but that doesn't excuse their actions. Maya has also filed sexual assault charges against them. The way they treated Maya and her family was inexcusable.

Soubriquet · 17/11/2023 16:42

I’ve literally just watched it now and I’m…absolutely speechless with how they have been treated. And not just them, but all the families that seem to be suffering because..why?! It’s obviously not about the child here or they wouldn’t have billed the insurance for CRPS and insist the child didn’t have it in the first place. I mean what really is their motive?

When I first heard I was wow about how much they were being paid and thought it was enough. After seeing this documentary I don’t think it’s enough. All the money in the world would never be enough

The whole story was awful and that poor family!

But... it did make me wonder if maybe the hospital had a point about the ketamine therapy and the incredible high doses Maya was taking. It wasn't the family's fault though as they were desperate for anything to lessen her symptoms and were advised by doctors. The ketamine treatment seemed very unorthodox though.

Listen to no one should believe me podcast , this was covered from the opposite angle. I found both the doc and the podcast were biased toward their own feelings just on opposite sides

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/05/2024 22:07

Netflix documentaries are not the truth. It was completely bias and left out so so much in order to pull on the heart strings. Utter tosh.

KT1995 · 08/05/2024 00:11

Where can we find the true story then @Lovethatforyouhun ?

If there wasn’t an element of truth to it, why did they get such a high payment as compensation?

DaisyChain505 · 08/05/2024 16:00

This really affected me in the way that Dear Zachary did. If you haven’t already seen it I believe the full Doc is on YouTube. To this day it still haunts me.

longtompot · 08/05/2024 17:14

At what point would you say someone has recovered from CRPS? For me, it would be they were no longer in pain and can move in a way they haven't been able to for a very long time due to the pain, probably after having a lot of physio. The article I just read about the law suit says

More than a year after being released from All Children's, she regained use of her legs, but Maya is still living with CRPS

That's not recovered to me, it just means she can move despite all the pain. It's what my dd does and she has very much not recovered from CRPS.

I too would like to know what was left out

Omg the "Dear Zachary" case is HORRIFIC!!!! Those poor poor grandparents

Soubriquet · 08/05/2024 17:23

Dear Zachary. Isn’t that the one where the grandparents were raising the baby, and custody overruled them and sent him back to his mother where she put in him in a sling and then jumped in the river killing them both?

Yep - the mother had also killed their son (the baby's father) which is why the grandparents were raising the baby but the authorities kept giving her custody back

DaisyChain505 · 08/05/2024 17:56

I watched dear Zachary without having any knowledge of it beforehand and when I realised what had actually happened I wish I’d never seen it. I don’t know how anyone could move on from that situation.

fliptopbin · 08/05/2024 18:54

The thing that strikes me as utterly unfair and bizarre is that the issue here was in fact a difference of professional opinion between two doctors. Maya's mother should not have been judged for choosing one doctor's opinion over the other in good faith simply because her manner seemed abrupt (probably due to cultural differences)
There seemed to be no acknowledgement that Beata was not a medical professional but a confused and terrified mother. It is shocking that she was accused of harming her daughter simply by choosing one doctor's opinion over anothers.
