Insurers are really taking the piss this year

Got my renewal quote. 30% up on last year. I've had no claims and no changes. Shopped around, got a quote that's 5% more but includes more mileage and business use, which I now need. Existing insurers made zero effort to match! Do they not want the business? So I am all sorted, but it seems such a daft business model. Anyone else experienced the same this year?

@onefinemess what does that mean? Isn't it the underwriters job to assess the risk? I know for a fact not all types of insurance are 'computer says yes / computer says no' but maybe motor is?

Notanotherhousepost · 21/06/2023 12:41

Getting three points for an SP50 (81 on a motorway) puts the insurance up from £365 to £920.

It used to be three points made no difference to insurance so long as that was all it was,

Oh think I can win here. Last year our insurance was £640. Renewal came in at £1250. ConfusedEnvy

I did obviously search around and got it to £800 but still.

FarmGirl78 · 21/06/2023 13:19

No idea how, it's so infuriating, he always falls on his feet.....but boyfriend's car insurance actually came down on his recent renewal!

I pay yearly for my car insurance.

Last year, it was £600. High but understandable as it was the first car in my name in about a decade.
This year, the renewal quote came through as £800!!
I called to ask why, they said "change in the way insurance is calculated" or something like that.

I used a comparison website and got equivalent cover for £340.

Similiar for me mine was £700 last year, did a shop around this year when the quote came in at £750 and got cover same standard through Aa for £312

LlynTegid · 21/06/2023 13:24

I didn't. However to try and make up for lost business during the pandemic, insurers are not the only ones increasing or trying to get large increases.

Hence one of the reasons I want a modern consumer act to stop some of the attempted or actual rip-offs that are happening.

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/06/2023 13:27

Just done our home insurance, it's gone up by £20 and no new deals that would be better for the level of cover we have.

pointythings · 21/06/2023 13:31

@cocksstrideintheevening my home insurance is due in October so we will see what the renewal quote is.

Oh my word ~ this is me. Eight years with Admiral and quote has doubled. Moved to Aviva and it’s less than Admiral charged me last year. More than 25 years no claims. Loyalty is a joke.

Glittertwins · 21/06/2023 16:18

Yes, car insurance went up a lot despite being no changes from last year

mightymam · 21/06/2023 16:18

YADNBU @pointythings. Our renewal has come up as being £800 more than last year. I've told them to fuck off and moved elsewhere.

JaceLancs · 21/06/2023 16:20

Mine went down this year but I suspect that’s because I have DS on as a named driver and he turned 30

mogtheexcellent · 21/06/2023 16:21

Two days trying to reduce my car insurance. Ended up saving 20 quid with a less known insurer. Ive stayed with current insurer this year.

Managed to save 50 on home insurance so thats a win i guess.

MrsPinkCock · 21/06/2023 16:24

Mine went from £250 to £450, and even on a price comparison site it was still the cheapest!

No accidents or points, 15 years NCB, no changes whatsoever… but nearly double and for absolutely no reason Confused

daffodilandtulip · 21/06/2023 16:26

No change in circumstances, 50% increase. Even more to switch.

RosaCaramella · 21/06/2023 16:26

My house insurance premium went up by 39.5% this year. I’ve not claimed and nothing major has happened in my street.

I questioned why it had gone up by so much and got the usual drivel but they did manage to take a bit off the premium - not a huge amount but better than nothing.

Every company seems to be getting in on the act of charging ridiculously high prices for everything and it’s not going to end well.

Thatladdo · 21/06/2023 16:33

Car insurance down £20 a month same insurer (a billion years NCD) for donkeys years
House insurance same renewal price (bank)

Happy days 😁

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/06/2023 16:37

Our home insurance went up by nearly £100 this year. Shopped around and ten minutes later found the same level of cover for £130 cheaper. Old insurer wouldn’t budge more than £20 on this year premium. Never ever claimed on any house/property insurance.
We moved insurers.
Guess the same thing will occur with the car insurance.
