7 year old wearing long sleeves

Hi,

AIBU to make DD wear long sleeve cotton shirts instead of short sleeves? My daughter has sensitive skin and gets itchy in the sun, I find it's better for her to have longer sleeves even going to school. The staff have made comments to HER that she isn't allowed to wear long sleeve tops anymore as it's hot but haven't said anything to me.

Write a note to her teacher.
Make sure the sleeves are loose not tight.

Pretty normal for a school to remind a child directly of the uniform rules. Just tell her teacher that you’re keeping her in long sleeves and explain why. No need for drama.

Speak to the school and explain
Unfair for them to make a young child feel uncomfortable - either by speaking to her about "inappropriate" clothing or being itchy if she were to wear short sleeve tops.

Just write a note to the school that your DD has to wear long sleeves in the sun for medical reasons.
Make sure your DD understands that's why she's wearing long sleeves

Ours are ENCOURAGED to wear long sleeves for sun protection.

Do what you need to keep her safe and inform the school via email

Loose sleeves that can be rolled up are fine. I've worn a loose long sleeve light coloured cotton shirt over a t-shirt to protect me from the sun.

EmeraldFox · 21/06/2023 07:33

If it's something like a bottle green long sleeved polo shirt then she may get a bit hot. Light coloured shirt should be fine.

Okshacky · 21/06/2023 07:34

Why do her arms get itchy if she wears short sleeves?

LolaSmiles · 21/06/2023 07:35

I'd want to clarify with them that they've said she specifically cannot wear long sleeves, as opposed to saying it's hot and suggesting she might be less hot in short sleeves/saying it's hot so she's best in short sleeves (which would be the case for many).

Either way, a note from you to school explaining why you've chosen long sleeves might help

FlounderingFruitcake · 21/06/2023 07:39

Have you talked to the GP or a pharmacist about the itching? I’d want to try to get it sorted if I could as it can’t be very pleasant for her and must be a nightmare if you go on a summer holiday. Long sleeved wouldn’t be allowed at my DD’s school unless they wore their jumpers because the uniform is a specific short sleeved dress for girls or polo for boys, but I would hope they would make accommodations if you had a doctor’s note. If they haven’t said anytime to you it doesn’t like it’s a huge problem at your school though, maybe write a note to the teacher to clarify so there’s not any confusion.

It's a white top, 100% cotton. She has nothing else underneath the top. Her skin developed patches last summer of pytiariasis alba, and I'm still applying prescription creams for the patches to go away nine months later on her face and her arms and legs. This happened despite me putting sunscreen on her.

My DD GP has said to wear loose linen/cotton clothing in summer last time. That's what they wear in African/Middle Eastern countries to protect from the sun.

White cotton top should be fine, assuming other children are in short sleeved versions of the same thing? Has the teacher not seen what many people wear in hot countries?

Sirzy · 21/06/2023 08:28

Why not just go and talk to school? Seems a simple answer

Clymene · 21/06/2023 08:29

You need to explain to the teacher why your daughter can't wear the school uniform. That's all

sevenbyseven · 21/06/2023 08:30

My kids uniform is polo shirt and jumper so there's no cool long sleeved option. However I'm sure they'd allow a cotton shirt instead for religious or health reasons if asked.

skgnome · 21/06/2023 08:31

Speak to the school
my DD school has a very strict uniform code but they will allow almost anything for medical or cultural reasons (parents do need to email or talk to school)
just talk to them

MarigoldGlove · 21/06/2023 08:47

What do you mean by 'isn't allowed'?

Have they told her it's against the uniform rules or has someone said it's not, she should wear short sleeves? Which is not necessarily true but that's beside the point.

Sometimes when an adult in school is making conversation with a child they can take it as an instruction.
