That's not a bed bug. That's just a bug that happens to be in your bed. To make you feel better and creepy crawler free, before you get home put all your clothing in a plastic bag and put in washing machine as soon as you get home. Have a long shower.

Here’s an article on everything to do. The long and short of it: get out. Hopefully you haven’t unpacked. If you have, put everything through a hot cycle in the dryer (according to this, it will kill one or two in your luggage - I assume this wouldn’t work with a home infestation) and there’s more tips in the article. Since you’re in an Airbnb, call their 24 hour service line, tell them you have bed bugs in your Airbnb and need to be rebooked immediately and you have a photo as proof.

For Airbnb, it says “the Urgent Support Line is available through the app during active reservations,” so you should have access to it, I hope.

How to Keep Bedbugs From Coming Home With You

Bedbugs peak in the summer, just in time for vacation. Here’s how to check your hotel bed for bedbugs—and what to do if you find them.</strong>

That absolutely is a bed bug.

Notesonaconditionalform · 21/06/2023 05:03

It looks identical to the photos.
I think actually it was booked through booking.com not air b and b
the most stressful thing is my mum etc are staying here too and they won't believe me about all the things you need to do to prevent bringing them home, i'm scared they're going to get them in their house and then spread them to mine!

Have you been bitten? Check the mattresses for the little black dots along the seams etc - it should tell you now bad the infestation is.

As others have said, wash EVERYTHING on hot and ideally put it through the dryer. Might be better to take the whole load to a laundrette on the way home.

Expect the host to tell you that they "had no idea" but I doubt you are the first. (I used to work in the industry).

What do you think a bed bug looks like?

I stand correct, looks like an adult bed bug, same as before though, put your belongings in a plastic bag, wash thoroughly, use a dryer if possible.

Share the link with them on how to prevent bed bugs to come home with you, also a link on how quick the spread, how difficult/expensive could be to get rid of them. Sorry OP. You should get your money back

Notesonaconditionalform · 21/06/2023 05:40

I have OCD so they think I'm overreacting.
This is genuinely my worst nightmare I absolutely won't cope if I bring bed bugs back to my house Sad

Why be such an arse? May be they don't there are bedbugs? Surely better to wait and see how they react before you leave a review and potentially ruin their business?

What does leaving a bad review actually achieve (if they take the issue seriously?)

autieawesome · 21/06/2023 06:03

It's not about leaving a bad review. A review should be a honest account for future guests

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 21/06/2023 06:05

We had them in a high end apartment in Barbados - nightmare!! We didn't realise what the they were and i still feel awful when i imagine them crawling over (and eating) my 5 month old baby who was sharing my bed.

In hindsight, there were HUGE red flags - tiny spots of blood stain on the sheets for example.

My brother had a phone that had an amazing zoom photo thing and the photo he took of the bedbug camp in the joints of the wooden bed still makes me crawl. We know check every single bed we sleep in.

When we realised what they were, we literally threw everything in to cases and left - it was like the Marie Celeste. When we left the hotel we decamped to at the end of the holiday, we shook every single solitary item over the bath (so we could see if eggs/bugs were in our clothes - there were).

We ordered a chest freezer to be delivered on our day of arrival and every single thing - from a pair of knickers to the car seat to the cases - went in there for 48 hours before coming in to the house to be washed. We found dead bugs in our cases.

I think that there was a major infestation in that apartment, but given the above action, we didn't bring them to our house.

We of course told the hotel that we left about the situation so that they could deal with it if they needed to.

The owners of our original apartment paid for the hotel and some compensation so i didn't leave them an arsehole review. They were genuinely upset and didn't know (they lived in the UK).

LemonRoseCat · 21/06/2023 06:52

Take everything to a laundrette - do not go into your home. You need to wash everything and put it all in the dryer. This includes make up bags, your cases - anything with fabric. If it can’t go in the dryer it needs to go in the freezer for 48 hours.

A review should be an honest account of how you found the place so future guests can make an informed decision. It looks like an adult bed bug so probably has been there for months , with its many relatives. I would want to know if I were going to stay in that place. Is up to the host what to do next.
I would also want a full refund.
And not, I am not being an arse.

Notesonaconditionalform · 21/06/2023 07:42

no one else wants to leave which I think is INSANE
I think I might just get the train back, and buy new clothes in primark and chuck my belongings (i didn't bring much just one pjs and one change of clothes )

regarding reviews- tbf if someone had left a review saying there was bed bugs, it would have saved me a whole lot of stress (maybe no one else has noticed which is fair enough, but I have) and I can't really in good conscious just let everyone else who stays here bring bed bugs home with them when it's so hard and expensive to get rid of them

nomoretoriesforme · 21/06/2023 08:06

Sorry to hear that. Definitely contact Booking.com , they should provide you with an alternative accommodation.
Could you also amend your heading , as it wasn't Airbnb but Booking.com, you said? so it's easier for people to find this thread if they have similar issues.

FannyFifer · 21/06/2023 08:34

This is also my worst nightmare. I honestly think I would ditch every single thing I had with me. I would then go to primark & buy an entire outfit including shoes. Then I would go to my local leisure centre. Ditch clothes I was wearing go for a swim for an hour then come out & into brand new clothes.
Can't believe your family want to stay, get out of there.

I think this is pretty much what I'm going to do i don't have a single thing here with me that's worth bringing bed bugs home for. I've just bought the kids new beds and mattresses it took so long to get the money for the thought of them getting infested is so depressing)
I don't know wether to leave ( every fibre of my being wants to leave right now) or to stay to make sure they bag up their stuff and wash it all properly (they plan to stop at a laundrette on the way home)

If the worst should happen and you do bring the fuckers home with you despite your best efforts then do not despair!

Go on Amazon and search for Cimexa, then look up some YT videos for how to apply it. In fact, you could do this anyway as a way of preventing anything taking hold. It's just made from silica gel - no nasty pesticides, so it's child and pet safe and it stays active until you hoover it up.

PencilsInSpace · 21/06/2023 08:58

Not sure about the launderette plan, that seems like a good way of spreading them around the community.

Would it spread them ? Straight in the washing machines on a hit wash from a bin bag?

I thought bed bugs were tiny hardly visible. . That looks too big to be a bed bug.

I was going to say the same! Please don't take things to a public launderette 😬

GayPareeee · 21/06/2023 09:22

DS bright then home from a school trip. We were advised to leave all belongings outside the house and then bring in a way at a time, wash hot, tumble hot.

Another thing to do for things you can't wash hot is your in black bin bags and leave in direct sunlight as the temperature inside can get hot enough to kill them.

Viviennemary · 21/06/2023 09:22

No I googled it. Looks like it is one. I thought ZI read once they are no bigger than a speck of dust. But thats the residue. Horrific.
