To just miss appointments as can’t park?

Hospital is full to bursting and you can’t park anywhere for miles around. They won’t talk to me on the phone as I’m in the car even though outside hospital 😂 not sure what to do!

`The stupid thing is that getting there early to ensure parking, just means that the parking situation gets worse for everyone.

DataNotLore · 20/06/2023 12:37

Hospitals clearly need to be better served with public transport and cycle infrastructure.

There will always be limited parking and it should be reserved for staff and BB holders.

Wereisit · 20/06/2023 12:38

Blackbyrd · 20/06/2023 12:35

It hardly requires hindsight to understand that hospital car parks are always full to bursting and therefore people need to accommodate that fact

Or that sometimes it takes longer than other times. Looks like this was one of those times.

EnthENd · 20/06/2023 12:38

Apologise for being late, hope they can still see you, and you know better for next time. Anyone can get caught out by travel problems and it doesn't matter whether you drive, take public transport, cycle, or walk.

Wishitwascooler · 20/06/2023 12:38

That’s very true @TeenDivided ! and I am here and I did leave adequate time, as in normal circumstances I could have walked but various roads were shut (which I was not aware of.) Sigh. Anyway I am just waiting so I guess a few people were also running late.

So really I should have not gone to work at all? Hmm and taken that as unpaid? Not sure … some of these criticisms are a tad unfair.

DH had an outpatients appointment this morning, and actually got DD to drive him there as parking is nigh on impossible due to building work. DD had to book the morning off as I'm at work covering DH's and my business. He got there slightly early, was called in and the Dr said "Oh why are you here?" (DH had a hernia repair last week) - "this is a pre op clinic". So he had a quick look at his stitches, said all looks great and sent him off again. Complete and utter waste of everyone's time and apparently the system hadn't been updated that DH has had the surgery....

RampantIvy · 20/06/2023 12:43

Our local hospital had decent parking, but the big car park is now only for staff (which I don't disagree with BTW). Fortunately I discovered this when driving DH to an appointment. I went elsewhere then picked him up later.

It makes it more difficult for the staff when anyone has had a procedure as the person collecting the patient can't park and then go up to daycare or the ward to collect them. So they need extra staff to take the patient to the entrance where they can be picked up by the driver at the pick up/drop off point.

There is no public transport to the hospital from where we live so if I needed to go I would have to get a taxi (DH can't drive much these days).

user50316 · 20/06/2023 12:43

We had a nightmare with my (baby) daughter's appointment - luckily I'd gone with my mum so I had to hop out with the baby and she went and parked miles away. It was a drop in clinic and I still got yelled at by the woman for arriving 15 minutes before it closed (the appointment itself only took 5 minutes!).
And don't get me started about our local labour ward!! I was 9cm dilated and we had to abandon our car as there were no spaces!!!!

Not sure what the answer is though? More parking elsewhere and a courtesy bus?!

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/06/2023 12:44

In an ideal world, people would leave sufficient time to get to appointments with time to spare.
In an ideal world, parking nearby would be possible.
In an ideal world, there wouldn’t be unexpected roadworks and diversions.

We don’t live in an ideal world. Things happen at work, traffic happens, hospital car parks are notoriously always full. You got there OP and I hope the appointment goes well.

why unfair? it's a sad fact it's impossible to park, and it cost a fortune. You need alternative arrangements.

Take a taxi, take the bus and walk, ask someone for a lift. What else do you think everybody does?

In an ideal world, most people would not need to use a car to get there.

I think some of these comments are unfair. I have used two major hospitals, one with excellent public transport links, one with next to none, so it's not as easy as "just take the train".

My nearest big hospital is 45 mins away, with little to no public transport, so I always leave 1hr30mins time, but sometimes it's thing after thing and I get stuck in traffic and stuck parking.

Nicecow · 20/06/2023 12:46

OhForFucksFuckingSake · 20/06/2023 12:49

Exactly this happened to me last month. I had to drop the kids at school and then drove straight to hospital. Got there 45 mins early for my appointment but I ended up circling the car park for over an hour trying to find a space. All the streets around the hospital were unsurprisingly resident permit only parking. I had to bail in the end. After a certain amount of time, even if I still managed to get seen, it would've impacted too much on other appointments I had in the day and ultimately would've made me late for the school pick up. I called them from the car park and said I'd be driving round in circles for an hour but I had to go.

It's ridiculous.

MassiveSalad22 · 20/06/2023 12:49

Our hospital is the same. I move hell and high water to get there on time every time, and usually have to sit in the waiting room for 60-90mins (with a baby as it’s her appointments) as they’re running late 😂😭

Wishitwascooler · 20/06/2023 12:53

Yes we are nowhere near a train station! Getting the bus would mean getting the bus to the city centre and then the hospital, there is no through route. I should have got a taxi though, conceded, it’s just hard sometimes because you can’t predict traffic.

Thank you for your kindness @Bluevelvetsofa , it is a routine maternity appointment, sure nothing is untoward but scrambling over walls at 36 weeks pregnant is impressive, I don’t know whether to be mortified at myself, proud of myself or laugh at myself 😂

Are you in Belfast by any chance? Sounds like the Royal! Parking a total shambles and while there is a bus that goes right through the site, it only comes from city centre. Nightmare. I once only made a maternity appointment because a staff carpark barrier was open and I shamelessly drove in 😆

itshotontheplayground · 20/06/2023 12:58

of course it's not easy.

It's made even worst by having no choice whatsoever about the time and date of your appointments, you can't even ask to book one on a day off, during school hours.

But we all know it's a disaster, you need to plan, not finding a parking space is not an excuse. It's awful when people need to drop their child in A&E.

I think you should have planned ahead better. Everybody knows that hospital parking is dreadful and cannot be relied upon, apart from you apparently. You should have come up with a better plan (a lift, a taxi, Uber, public transport) and if all that fails, well uses sometimes we have to use annual leave for appointments if the workplace won’t accommodate it.

HolyFire · 20/06/2023 13:00

One good thing about my area is that car parking in hospitals is free.

NineOfNine · 20/06/2023 13:01

Hospital parking can be horrible.

I get the arguments about how people should plan to go early, I do, but that’s not always a solution that works.

I got caught out badly for one hospital appointment - I arrived at the entrance to the hospital car park an hour and a half before my appointment. I’d assumed that arriving 90 minutes early would have left me more than enough time to find a space. But no.

The entire car park ground to a halt. The visitor car park at this hospital has an automatic entry barrier, it only lets cars in if there’s a space. So once it’s full, it’s one out, one in. The route to the visitor car park is on a one way system through the staff car park, so you can’t see the queue for the visitor car park until you’re in the staff car park.
And once you’re in the staff car park, in a stationary queue past you’re stuck. Once you get past a certain point, there’s no way to turn around, no way to access the exit lane until you’re the car at the very front of the queue.

I was stuck in that queue in the staff car park for over 2 hours, so ended up half an hour late for my appointment. Although at least the secretary at the clinic answered the phone when I rang to explain that I was stuck in the queue. She didn’t sound surprised, and did manage to arrange for me to be moved to the end of the list in the clinic. I guess I’m not the first person to have been caught out like that.

WhiteFire · 20/06/2023 13:01

I'm not sure everyone arriving 45minutes early to get parked actually helps the issue, as there will still be all the same people trying to get parked.

My last appointment was great, it was 8am. Hardly anyone else around.

Said by someone who clearly doesn't live rurally.
No public transport to the hospital or Ubers where we live.

However, if I had a hospital appointment I would book a (non Uber) taxi several days in advance.
