To think DS ears can't be left like this

DS (4) has had minor problems with his ears for the last few years, they seem to get infected quite easily. He's had a burst eardrum in the same ear 3 times in the last 18 months. In that same ear he has a huge black buildup of wax, we've tried doing the olive oil thing numerous times but to no avail.

He had a hearing test done as he has problems with his speech but they said it wasn't affecting it. He's had numerous drs appointments for other things (coughs etc) and each time they've checked that ear they've said they can't see the eardrum but not seemed too bothered.

Will the buildup just be left there? I know when I've had blocked ears it really affects how much I can hear. He can't hear the correct sounds in words and I know the hearing people said it's not affecting him but surely it would make a bit of difference to his hearing if his eardrum is completely blocked?

How detailed was the hearing test? Was it at a specialised audio place or the Doctors? Our son had a massive glue build up and only grommets dealt with it.

Have you seen ENT ?

mikado1 · 20/06/2023 06:56

3 yo at time had a very similar situation and he had grommets. No antibiotics or ear infections since, now qq! Grommets long gone.

11 not qq lol

i Would ask for an ent referral. Especially if he has reptiles his tympanic membrane 3 times in 18 months along with speech problems.

Have you considered a private refferal its often a lot less expensive than you think

Ds has had grommets 3 times. You need to focus on the not hearing not the infections.
Three in 18 months sounds not much to me:
Ds first had grommets after around 30 infections in 18 months including 6 bust ear drums. His second set of grommets was after more like 8 burst ear drums in 3 months. They seemed to take it in turns!

But it was the hearing that got the grommets. He was lip reading as his hearing was so bad. He had checks every 3to 6 months until he was 12yo.

My daughter once had a wax build up when she was 4. She couldn't hear in her ear because of it. She was about to start school and replied "what?" Every time we spoke to her. I took her privately to gave her ears hoovered for £80! We also used a nose balloon to help clear her internal ear tubes (dont know the medical name!)
