Pregnant just before starting new job

I just found out I’m pregnant (4.5 weeks). I start a new job in 2 weeks!! What are the implications of this? Is it a complete disaster.

YABU- this is not going to go well.

YANBU- it’s fine, these things happen and you have a right to get pregnant.

Ahh thanks so much for your comments everyone, you’ve made me feel so much better ❤️. I had a bit of a sleepless night yesterday worrying about it all, but this makes me feel more reassured. The finances are definitely a worry, but it is what it is. As others have said, Not much difference from SPM anyways.

There were a couple of comments from men (!) who were firmly put in their place

ahh I love this! I really hope my new work place is like yours 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I’d probably just hope no one says anything - even if you’re in the right it’s best to avoid friction with colleagues.

No one will have a problem I’m sure - I’ve never been anything but happy for colleagues who’ve gotten pregnant (and I’m a man)

Probation doesn’t really much much of a legal meaning, it’s 2 years before you get full employment rights, regardless of a probationary period.

However, protection from discrimination is a day one right, and if you are let go while pregnant your employer should give you a written explanation as to why.

ohh, I didn’t know that. this is really helpful. ❤️

Firstly, congratulations! Secondly, these things happen and honestly it’s not rare for this to happen! I would stay at your new job and tell them when you need to which is I believe 5 months (or earlier if you felt you wanted too - I had to at 8 weeks due to HG)

You’ll lose out on the 90% for 6 weeks I believe but should get the SMP?

To be honest you could be working somewhere for 3 years and they can still be unhappy about you going on maternity leave lol so I wouldn’t worry about that.

Put anyone in their place IF they made any comments which I’m sure they wouldn’t

I found out I was pregnant 17 days into new job,in fact the start date had been delayed almost 3 weeks so blame that on getting pregnant in the first place 🤣

I had to inform work at 12 weeks as had to show ultrasound letter to get the time off, they were actually very understanding and wished me well for the pregnancy.
I had to claim maternity allowance as wasn't in work long enough for statutory maternity pay.

PinkFrogss · 19/06/2023 21:24

Forgot to say Congratulations on the new job and pregnancy as well OP Flowers

These things happen, they shouldn't get to worked up over it hopefully

icanflysometimes · 19/06/2023 23:04

You might be entitled to maternity pay. My company recently changed this and you would be. It's rare but some companies are more generous than others.

If you were in my team, I would inwardly roll my eyes but wish you congratulations (and actually also mean that.)
