DC sick today- AIBU to swim tomorrow?

DC was sick this morning, heatstroke affected.
Since then completely fine.
Can't go to school until Tuesday due to 48 hour sickness rule (DC loves telling everyone they've been sick and would and has been sent home before in simular kind of situation). School are very strict about this rule- understandable.

Have 2 other DC, one with additional needs which is very overly consuming of everything we do if you know what I mean. That DC will be in school tomorrow, giving rare opportunity to take the other two to do an activity that's not possible with all DC.

So,

YABU to take DC swimming when off school sick

YANBU go swimming, school says rules are rules

Any elaboration on either point from voters please?

Don’t see the point of punishing yourself and the other DC by staying in due to school rules. Definitely go swimming, have a lovely day together. Especially if you don’t get to do it often.

Silvergoldandglitter · 18/06/2023 21:46

I wouldn't. You'll never know 100% the cause of him being sick. It could be a bug.

WimpoleHat · 18/06/2023 21:49

School are strict about the rules because it could be a bug and, if so, still infectious during that time. YABU knowingly to expose others to that risk.

Grumpypupster · 18/06/2023 21:50

How do you know it was definitely heat stroke?

My DC have had instances of been sick once then totally fine, or sick once, felt well and 24 hours later full on puking again none stop.

Yabu to take a child swimming after they have been sick. You risk spreading a bug to others.

Waitingforsummertocome · 18/06/2023 21:53

I feel for you and can see why you would want to go but it’s not worth it. Also DC would probably tell school they went swimming when off sick leading to all sorts of queries. I’d do something nice at home instead

saltedpretzel2 · 18/06/2023 22:00

Sorry op but yadbu to take a child who's been sick swimming.

It might have been heatstroke but there's always a chance it wasn't, and therefore you don't know what you are passing on that's not fair on others

School has the 48hr rule for a reason, a scientific reason it's not just a random time

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/06/2023 22:03

Please don't take them swimming if they've been sick.

Dacadactyl · 18/06/2023 22:06

I'd probably take them tbh. But I wouldn't have asked on here cos they'll make you feel guilty about it.

FASDE1517 · 18/06/2023 22:23

I would if you're sure it's heatstroke. I have a child who's missed a couple of days off school before as he also delights in telling everyone "I puked yesterday" after he's been car sick.

12345c · 18/06/2023 22:29

@FASDE1517 100% sure it's heatstroke

They have had plenty of fluids, been eating as normal and full of beans today.
Puke this morning was just bile, and a tiny amount

Silvergoldandglitter · 18/06/2023 22:32

Heatstroke is life threatening so if he does have this then he wouldn't be in any fit state to swim. Do you mean he just had too much sun?

12345c · 18/06/2023 22:32

I'm perhaps more biased towards bending the rules because DC puts up with so much shit from their sibling and gets no respite/other time other than 1 club a week and the hours they're at school.

12345c · 18/06/2023 22:33

@Silvergoldandglitter yes sorry, just too much sun- overheated, restless night and little sick in the morning

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 18/06/2023 22:34

You don't know it is definitely heat stroke, it's perfectly possible for a viral or bacterial infection to only effect him mildly but for him still to be infectious to others which is why he is not allowed in school and if he can't be in school he certainly shouldn't be swimming.

Bigwildorange · 18/06/2023 22:38

I wouldn’t. There’s no way of knowing for sure that it’s not a bug/virus. Could you go out anyway, to the beach/park etc? Just not swimming as it would be very easy to pass something on in the pool

Isitthathardtobekind · 18/06/2023 22:40

You can’t be 100% sure it was just the heat. I would follow the same rules as the schools. Pools say not to attend for 48hrs after sickness.

SoccerStars · 18/06/2023 22:44

Yeah it’s based on NHS advice about staying at home for 48 hours. There is chlorine in the pool which cleans things I guess but it seems a bit gross to take a kid there who is showing signs they may have a bug. And what if they suddenly throw up in the pool? Lovely job for the pool attendants! 🤢

WeWereInParis · 18/06/2023 22:56

YABVU. But it sounds like you're going to go anyway.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/06/2023 22:58

12345c · 18/06/2023 22:33

@Silvergoldandglitter yes sorry, just too much sun- overheated, restless night and little sick in the morning

But those are also signs of a bug.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2023 23:09

It could easily be a bug - you just don’t know it’s only too much sun.

Take them out but somewhere outdoors - a nice walk, a bike ride, if you’ve got some pretty places near you that are outdoor to visit, that sort of thing.

Definitely not swimming though - it’s just the sort of place to circulate a bug.
