Uniform

Ok so my eldest daughter's school (state Grammar) had a crazily expensive uniform that they are now replacing-think £65 to in excess of £80 for a blazer. She is in year 8 and needs a new skirt because her school has pencil skirts which tear constantly. We have been told we can't mix and match old and new uniform but they can wear the old uniform for 2 years. I don't want to buy an old style skirt as the new one is pleated not pencil so I won't need to do the wash, wear, sew rotation we currently have going. Plus the old skirt contravenes Gov guidance which says that the school needs to ensure that the uniform is suitable and safe to cycle or walk to school which it isn't. The old uniform only allows one specific form of trousers which don't fit her. So basically the school are putting me in a position where I need to pay £50 for the new style blazer if she wants to wear a skirt she can properly walk and cycle in. I think mix and matching should be allowed. Both blazers are navy but one is marine navy with no piping or logo and the new one is normal navy with piping and a logo. Any thoughts?

Id just buy the new skirt and see what happens. Write a note for your dd to have in her pocket ready, but dont offer it until asked.

I would try to get together with other parents (via PTA, Facebook groups etc) to see if anyone else will have similar issues and then if there are a lot of you then a meeting with the school would have more impact and they might change their minds.

DDs school is updating uniform this summer and all old items will be valid for the foreseeable future... and indeed stocked by the school in the 2nd hand shop.

I think they should be allowed to mix and match, but not sure what you can do if they're not, short of just trying it and seeing what happens, or complaining/campaigning.

I'm wondering if this is my old school (town beginning with B that the school is named after, new head used to be deputy) - I heard recently about the uniform changing and it's made me sad and nostalgic, although I completely understand why from a cost of living point of view. Still... the old uniform was very distinctive (because of the blouse) and the new one is just the same as so many shcools around here.

Is it legal for a Govt school to do this?

Can you get an alteration done to the trousers that don't fit her correctly?

I wouldn't normally be that parent but for this I would be

And getting all suitable legislation in order so when I have a meeting with the head I have a well prepared argument. Ideally the meeting with the head would before DD wore new skirt.
