BOTOX…..help!

If you don’t like/ agree with the idea of Botox, please just step away from this thread as it won’t be for you!

Those of you that are Botox regulars….has anyone been resistant to it before? And if so, were there any other toxins that did work for you?

I had Botox a couple of months ago and unfortunately there were no results whatsoever. I went to a reputable nurse practitioner who a few of my friends go to. She said I’m the only person it has ever happened to for her and that I must be resistant to it.

I’m gutted as now I’m heading towards my 40’s I’d really like a bit of subtle Botox. WIBU to try a different brand?

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I confess I know nothing about it. However, I’ve never heard of anyone being resistant to it. Does she have any reviews? Could you look for another practitioner and ask them?

GCWorkNightmare · 16/06/2023 10:26

I find anything non-Botox wears off much more quickly. I get a top up 2 weeks after just to make sure that there is enough in there. It lasts forever in my forehead lines but wears off more quickly in my 11s (I frown a lot).

I also find it wears off more quickly if the Botox hasn't been kept cold.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 16/06/2023 10:27

Resistance is a thing I've heard about. Can't hurt to try Dysport or something instead I suppose?

IAmAboutToLoseMyShit · 16/06/2023 10:37

I would see what product your aesthetician uses and try a different one. I have been having anti-wrinkle injections for years and it's always been fine. My usual lady stopped doing it, so I went elsewhere on the recommendation of a friend in August last year. I had full movement in my forehead and not one bit of it was frozen. I went back, in total, three times between August and December. She put more in each time and nothing happened.

My original lady started doing it again bin January this year, so I went back to her. Got the usual from her and been great. I probably won't need a top up until end of the year now.
Moral of that very long winded story, you may need to try a different brand.

Ohhh, this gives me a lot of hope! Thank you!!

Maybe I should try a different practitioner? Do you know what original brand you had success with?

Not a bloody clue sorry.

NaturalKisstoryMuseum · 16/06/2023 11:08

Yes try someone else! I have botox for migraines and it's bloody brilliant.

One type didn't work as well as another. Try somewhere new (but safe and professional)

Yes I'm also resistant to it.

It worked for the first few treatments then it just didn't despite massive top up doses.

I don't think there is an alternative. Different brands will still use the botulism toxin.

LifeIsPainHighness · 16/06/2023 11:34

Did she not offer you a top up treatment?
I’m not sure how your body can be resistant to a muscle relaxant! I’d be asking for a refund.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 16/06/2023 11:45

Try someone else.
I get MUCH better results since I trained and do it myself and for my friends, then we ever did going to other people.

Thats because I put a decent amount in each area (but not exceeding the recommended amount of course), I use a different type and I put in less saline, the recommended amount. Lots of practitioners put more saline in "because of the spread". Bullshit, you just want your vial to stretch to more people so you make more money.

I didn't realise all of the above until I trained and started doing it myself.

I don't do it to make money, I just do me and a handful of friends.

Ardiaei · 16/06/2023 11:48

It seems that some people can develop antibodies to the proteins in botulinum toxin, which act as antigens. The antibodies then block the action on muscles.

It’s supposed to be rare, but it may be more common than thought. I don’t think we know the true prevalence.

VapeVamp12 · 16/06/2023 12:18

My friend does Botox and she had a whole batch that didnt work on about 10 customers! she had to do it all again for free

Kittykat9070 · 16/06/2023 12:21

I’m an aesthetician, try a different brand. Believe it or not actual Botox brand isn’t always great!
I use Boccature and get great result with my clients.
Also, don’t be too put off of someone isn’t a registered nurse. I’m not a nurse, but I hold all my qualifications, I have regular complications courses, and I’m absolutely passionate about my job. It took a while for people to come to me as they were worried about me not being a nurse, now I’m pretty much fully booked most weeks as more and more people are aware I fully know what I’m doing.
So check out your local aesthetics practitioner, and see how you get on x

Thelnebriati · 16/06/2023 12:23

I used to have Botox for medical reasons, but developed a resistance to it and after a comparatively short time they had to use a very high dose, which had little effect. Apparently its down to your immune system, and mine works well.

If you stop using it for a year or two, your immune system will reset and you can try it again.

everlee · 16/06/2023 14:47

Are injectable aesthetics not regulated in the UK? Anyone can train and do it, not just medical professionals.. 😱 Do insurers cover these non medical beauticians?

lionsleepstonight · 16/06/2023 15:12

I found it started to wear off sooner and sooner so have given up now.

Gymnopedie · 16/06/2023 15:36

Hi OP. I'm in the same boat, as mentioned above for a few people their body attacks the Botox almost as soon as it's injected and gets rid of it super fast.

The first time I had it, I had my first appointment and when I went back two weeks later for the top up, there was no difference. So it was a lot more than just topping up. Two weeks after that, still no difference, a lot more. In total I had six sets of injections and I should have had a forehead set like concrete, but they didn't do a thing.

A few years later I was very stressed and frowning so badly I was giving myself headaches, so I decided to go for it again. Different practitioner, same (non) result.

I haven't tried again.

Redparrot01 · 16/06/2023 15:55

Gah.

Really not sure whether it’s worth me bothering again. It’s a lot of money for zero results 😭

I really don’t want to grow old gracefully though, I’m wondering whether there’s any thing similar to Botox on the market. I’ve heard of prophilo but upon research it looks like that’s hit and miss for a lot of people…and painful….and expensive!

There are several different strains of Botox, these aren't different brands but different strains, they include dysport and xeomin.
In a medical setting your consultant cycles through them to try to reduce your immune response but IDK how cosmetic providers work.
I find dysport much more painful than other strains. AFAIK, the latest strain is xeomin, its much more pure than the others and less likely to trigger an immune response.
If I were you I'd look for a different provider, check they store the product correctly (it needs to be stored refrigerated) and ask them what strain they are currently using so you can keep track.

IamChipmunk · 16/06/2023 18:15

I dont find botox works very well for me. Doesn't properly 'freeze', although does reduce movement, and doesnt last despite getting a top up.

I have also tried Azzalure and get great results with that. Properly frozen and good for a good 4 months. I dont bother now if my lady can only get Botox. I just wait til she has Azzalure 'in stock' as it were.

Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 · 16/06/2023 18:28

I would try someone else and mention your issue. Also, did she not offer a top up?
My Botox tends to last 3 months and the doctor I go to is fab. I decided to try a local nurse instead as she was much closer geographically and the Botox wore off after 5 weeks! She didn't offer top ups either.
I went to her again...I know, big mistake and again it lasted 5 weeks. The next time she used a whole bottle (so she said) and I had droopy brows. She also charged me £550!!! (Nearly £300 more than she charged me the previous time).

I've gone back to my original Dr. All has been fantastic. So definitely try someone else, just in case.

Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 · 16/06/2023 18:33

Just seen you mentioned Profhilo- I'd never do it againm did absolutely nothing. Complete waste of money (for me anyway).

Catza · 16/06/2023 18:34

My first injection experience was lacklustre. It did give some effect but didn’t sufficiently eliminate the movement. It wasn’t a big deal for me since I only w aged to fix unintentional frowning (which it did but I was still able to frown if I wanted to). With my second injection a higher dose was used - still a little movement but a bit better. Sometimes it’s about finding the right dose but you can also try a different brand or a different practitioner. Techniques and experience vary greatly and it can be a factor

Rebecca1985x · 23/12/2023 03:10

Yep, I am resistant too. Worked like a charm the very first time, second time much less so, third time needed over 100 units! It still hardly did anything. Very sad! I’m looking into trying natural Botox now. Your immune system will be primed for at least 10 years, so it’s not a case of waiting a year or two and trying again unfortunately.
