Every single morning I get woken up by next doors dog barking. Usually it’s between 6 and 7, this morning…. 5.15!
it gets out the cat flap and just barks mindlessly.
AIBU to go round there in my pjs to make sure they are wide awake too???

Just back…. She blamed out cat! Said our cat tries to get in and her dog is just chasing him away… which is rubbish…she also said she understands how awful it is to live with noise because our son plays football in our garden! To which I said I’m happy for the council to come and decide which is unreasonable, some one playing football in the garden for half an hour at the weekend or a dog barking at 5.15 in the morning 😡and every morning!

I would shut my cat in at night, especially if it is trying to get in other peoples houses via their cat flaps!

I am glad that vile post was removed. Disgusting suggestion.

I am also glad that you did in fact go and speak to your neighbour, even if it didn't end with the desired result.

Sunmachine · 16/06/2023 13:08

@Tessasanderson shes never mentioned the football noise before, she said she was worried about the ball going over so we moved the goal and solved the problem she raised..neighbourly eh?

The dog barks when our cat in inside… it is not barking at our cat… that’s why it is rubbish. Her dog goes out the cat flap..

Actually… are you my neighbour?

Your neighbour should have the cat flap closed, so the only person her dog wakes up, is its owner. But she won't, so I recommend buying some peacocks.

Or hack into their wifi and put youtube videos of barking dogs on their TV.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 16/06/2023 13:51

I agree with the council form to log it for 2 weeks, but also go and knock every time it wakes you, at the time it wakes you, and if your cat is inside at that point tell them this. If you make it their problem too you are more likely to get them to take action.

Nope im not your neighbour. But your inability to discuss without confrontation leads me to believe my instincts which are that you may be slightly more culpable than you are admitting to. I encouraged discussion and understanding from both sides. If you cant embrace that and its all her fault, well you are welcome to each other.

She never mentioned the football noise before.....she has now. Thats an opportunity for you.

The dog barks when your cat is inside. Easy to just state for her benefit that cat will be indoors for next couple of nights anyhow so she feels like she has a win. Also means if dog barks you have moral high ground to point out its not your cat.

Just trying to help. But ok i will just join the masses and encourage you to confront, argue and blame. Thats gonna get you so much more success.

Thanks all for the moral support… doesn’t feel great to have an issue with your next door neighbours. Happy to keep DCat indoors for a few nights to prove a point (maybe I’ll record the barking out the window with dcat asleep in the background). She won’t close the cat flap to keep her dog in but hey-ho!

Throw some oxo cubes/powder onto her lawn when it's raining and let it soak in. Supposedly the dog will dig to find the meat/bone and trash her lawn. Might make her think twice about letting it outside unsupervised all the time if it destroys her garden.

HollyBookBlue · 16/06/2023 21:40

When I lived in a terrace, I knocked on my neighbour's door at 3am because they thought it was a good time to hoover the upstairs. So yes do it.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 16/06/2023 21:46

if you leant a pallet or similar against the door where the cat-flap is, the dog wouldn't be able to get out of it.

Holly1239 · 17/06/2023 00:13

We have a neighbour that chucks her cat out of the back door at 4am every morning & it just sits out there meowing until the lazy 🐄 gets up at 7 to let it back in.
When I told her about it she said, she let's it out because it keeps her awake, no concern that it was keeping us awake meowing, practically outside our bedroom window. Some people are just so entitled and don't care about others around them, I'm sure she'd be the first to complain if it was our dog.
I sprayed the cat with water a couple of times and now she keeps it in, but only after a big argument over the fence about her cat being wet in the morning lol

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/06/2023 00:24

My Nana used the water spray method. Perhaps you could train the dog not to bark by spraying it with water every morning when it barks. Saves an uncomfortable confrontation with entitled neighbour (who will probably dig their heels in and not change).

If neighbour complains, explain you are training the dog not to bark and if they don’t like it they can keep their dog inside until a reasonable hour.

Oh gosh OP you sound like me 2 years ago. Dog was in the house but barking like crazy!! It has calmed down now but my god at 5 am it was not a joke

LetsPlayShadowlands · 17/06/2023 13:09

Ahh, kids playing in their garden at a reasonable time is the same as their stupid dog barking at 5am. They're twats! Selfish twats. Kick the ball against the wall in the garden next time it starts 😁

Anyone spraying my dog with water would cause much bigger conflict than a simple conversation

TheSnowyOwl · 17/06/2023 13:40

I’d just do what you originally planned and ring on her doorbell or knock on her door at 5am every single time her dog barks. I would also record it and raise it with the council.

cobden28 · 17/06/2023 13:44

make notes of dates/times that the neighbour's dog barks, and report then to the Environental Health department of your local council for the noise nuisance. Where I live, my local council regards any noise like this between 11 pm and 7 am as a 'noise nuisance' and your neighbours need to be aware of this.
If the dog is getting out into the garden via the cat flap, the neighbours should closse the cat flap at night - maybe just let the dog out for toiletting and then go back to bed for a couple of hours afterwards till it's time to get up?

I think the filming with your cat asleep inside is a really good idea. Hope she listens to reason then, but something tells me she won't. Good luck op. It is awful having neighbour issues, when all you want is a quiet life in your home. And not to be woken at 5.30am

Wolfpa · 19/06/2023 10:12

What do the covenants on your house say? Mine have a clause that I can’t have nuisance pets. If yours are the same you can report via that route .

Tessasanderson · 21/06/2023 10:58

Its been a couple of days. Has the dog been barking whilst the cat was kept inside? If so its time to ring her bell :-)
