AIBU to refuse to forage for my lunch? (Lighthearted)

DH has recently taken early retirement and has taken up growing vegetables in the garden. Whilst I am broadly in favour, he is affronted I refuse to pick salads etc. during my lunchtime as I like to prepare a packed lunch at 7am before I WFH.

I have suggested he picks the vegetables and puts them in the fridge so they are readily accessible, but he says they lose their freshness and the benefits of homegrown are lost.

I have also suggested that he uses the vegetables whilst cooking the evening meal (he cooks and I work full time) but he has accused me of being unsupportive of his interests and endeavours.

AIBU in just wanting a prepared lunch in my 30 minutes and rejecting/ignoring my DH’s hobby? The supermarket offering is far more convenient than trimming spinach leaves in the garden when I have limited time.

Haha YANBU.

My mum grows everything and basically force feeds me her fruit and veg but honestly I think it’s all tastes bland. The tomatoes aren’t tangy, the raspberries aren’t sweet and the apple are so sour I can barely bite into them

Picking a tomato and a few salad leaves takes seconds, and a home grown tomato warmed by the sun tastes delicious.

littleripper · 15/06/2023 22:17

DH grows huge amounts and proudly plonks them on the worktop like a mother hen showing off her chicks. It is infuriating.

He cooks. He grows. He knows when they are ready. He can flipping pick them.

You carry on OP, deny all knowledge of their existence.

LifeIsPainHighness · 15/06/2023 22:20

<whispers> Waitrose veg tastes nicer and won’t have caterpillars living in them.

GabriellaMontez · 15/06/2023 22:21

He called you unsupportive?! Because you won't use your lunch break to indulge his hobby.

How about he starts supporting you in having a pleasant lunch break?

Newname47 · 15/06/2023 22:48

Sounds like you need an office fridge to hide your pre prepared spinach in...

LamentedHelicopter · 15/06/2023 22:53

But a box. He can pick and wash the days offerings and leave in said box in the kitchen. It should be ready by 11.30 each day. or he can just make you lunch.

RaininSummer · 15/06/2023 22:54

You could ask him if he will go and pick them and wash and chop etc 15 mins before your lunchtime maybe although you may not want salad every day.

OrlandointheWilderness · 15/06/2023 23:11

Pick lots that aren't ready yet and leave the rest to be willowy and straggly. He'll be so affronted by your incompetence he'll do it himself 😂

Tinkerbyebye · 15/06/2023 23:15

If he is that bothered, he can prepare the fresh salad for you at lunchtime so it’s ready for you

Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent · 16/06/2023 07:14

Thank you. I’m glad I’m not alone in my thinking! I can look upon the radishes etc. which have gone to seed guilt free…
