Dusty tradesman

We are having our internal doors replaced, which I know is quite a dusty job.

What's reasonable to expect of a tradesman to manage the dust?

Ours has brought with him two dustsheets the size of bath towels.. and that's it.

My husband had some bigger ones luckily so he gave him those, then he's been collecting sawdust etc in the little ones, carrying it downstairs in a little dustsheet package (dropping as he goes), emptying it in our kitchen bin then asking to use our hoover to try and get the rest...

Aside from anything else it's a pretty new hoover and it's getting wrecked. Should he have bought his own?

AIBU to be pissed off?

He was recommended by two separate people and I'm honestly struggling to see how...

We had a chimney breast removed and they tanked the entire room, rolled it down and removed it when they were done.

That's utterly ridiculous.

We're having building work done and every single tradesman has brought their own professional vac. The flooring guys had two, one hooked up to their saws and one for hoovering as they went.

Emptying it in your bin. That's just shoddy, even someone with half a brain would realise they bring a few buckets with them to dump rubbish in next to where they're working.

This is very inconsiderate practice and I would have said something. These days I’m no push over when it comes to trades in my home!

In my experience I always get prepared for worst case scenario particularly with dust sheets (from my shed) and before they start I ascertain
what the job entails,
what mess is likely
how they will clean up and
where will they dispose of waste.

I basically talk through the project with them and outline my expectations.

I had a huge piece of work done in my home 2 years ago. Before the men started I had a list of queries and notes about my concerns.
Three small examples; no loud music from their radios, no climbing on the toilet bowl lids to reach up high in the bathrooms, no fag ends to be discarded on my drive whilst they took tea breaks in their van!

They did a fantastic job and we had a laugh at the end and said they appreciated the ground rules.

My modus is based on life experience of useless and disrespectful workmen. I’m too mature to make any assumptions about their management of my expectations so I manage theirs. 🙄

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll have to chalk this one up to experience and vet any future tradespeople more carefully.

I like the idea of ground rules.. I haven't checked our drive for fag butts yet. There has been quite a lot of unprofessionalism so I think that would tip me over the edge 😂.

Now to work out how we can de-dust every single room in the house once he leaves tomorrow with a Dyson that's on its knees 😫😫😫

He didn't turn up today so at least no more dust 😂
