To ask if post 50, you really can tighten up the bingo wing upper arm with exercise?

Suddenly, over the past few years, everything seems to be heading south, including my upper arms!

I have a serious ‘flap’ going on, something of which has been secured by long sleeved tops!

Now the warm weather is here I realise just how floppy my upper arms have become!

Is there REALLY an exercise that will make a difference? Or post 50 is this really difficult to achieve?

Watching with interest, I have started doing some exercises with heavier dumbbells (5kg), but as I only spend less than 10m twice a week unsurprisingly I'm not seeing a great deal of results.

However, I do see some definition and I figure its better than nothing so I'm persevering, I just find it really hard to remember to do them, need to tie them to a time I think

GenXsurvivor · 15/06/2023 18:13

@balzamico Well done on doing anything! At least you’re giving it a go!

I haven’t even started but need to do something.

I’d just love to know if there were any MNetters who had given it a go and had seen results!

I’ve seen some Hollywood people who have had surgery! Not something I could afford, so I was wondering why they had chosen this route!

once the bing ring appears, is there no going back?

Im embarrassed by my bingo wings and have taken to wearing 3/4 sleeves this summer..... so im now doing weights 3 or 4 times a week, but only for about 3 rounds and then when nothing happens I give up 🙈. Ive been reading into fat freezing, but its expensive and I cant decide if its a con !!

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/06/2023 18:48

I don’t think so. I’ve done weights and all sorts of other stuff, but no, not really.

VWT5 · 15/06/2023 18:54

I can say that swimming hasn’t sorted mine, serious amounts, hours and hours, endless hard aerobic swimming - nada, no change at all.

As part of HRT regime, adding in the testosterone gel, now that did make a difference, in terms of muscle and improvement to general arm definition…a work in progress

BerfyTigot · 15/06/2023 18:55

I'm afraid to say that I have resorted to elbow length sleeves after a couple of years of trying to get rid of mine.

I would love to learn to love them but I also have stretch marks on them 😥

ContinuousProcrastination · 15/06/2023 19:00

My mil doesn't have them but is very, very thin and basically been that way since her 50s

Nannyfannybanny · 15/06/2023 19:01

I have been doing Harley Pasternaks excercises with weights for over 20 years, they do help. The most amazing thing I found was over the years, barrowing soil compost, shingle down our garden really tightened them up, incredibly, but it doesn't last.

libertybelle · 15/06/2023 19:02

I can heartily recommend Amanda Kloots Arms video on YouTube - the 4 minute one. Works a treat! I do daily and it’s make a huge difference - no more wings!

Rogue1001MNer · 15/06/2023 19:03

Hmm. Somewhat depressedly following.
Mine have reduced with low carbon diet and exercise, but I think they're probably here forever now.

Hoping for a success story to give me optimism

ALongHardWinter · 15/06/2023 19:06

Watching this thread with interest! I have a similar problem (I'm 59). I have lost quite a bit of weight in the last 3 years (7 stone) so I suspect that the resultant loose skin is not helping.

Applesinmyhouse · 15/06/2023 19:09

Yes you can. I had insane loose skin from huge weight loss and I got reasonably toned looking arms. I mean I still had loose skin, nothing removes that except surgery but there was a huge difference.
The heavier the weight the better, try drop sets, don’t be afraid of the humble bicep curl and kettlebell swings are also a good one.

Humphriescushion · 15/06/2023 19:09

No, tried weight’s religiously and nada! Given up hope now.

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2023 19:10

You need to target your triceps.

Fattygettingthinner · 15/06/2023 19:14

Yes, you can I’m mid fifties, but you need to do strength training, the right weights and understand what you’re doing, and do it properly Ie lighter for longer is for resilience, heavier for shorter is for strength.

you can Google many exercises and you need to use heavy weights, I bought a heavy iron set of dumbbells, so I could increase the weights as I got stronger. Chloe Madeley gives good info on weights for women.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/06/2023 19:19

Yes. But you should do them under supervision - class or p/t. The amount of people who use weights pointlessly & try to follow random YouTube videos is mad.

I'd also work them in as part of overall HIIT training as the cardio exercise will also help eg burpees, ski erg, push ups and so on, with weights integrated.

With weights: tricep & bicep curls, lateral raises & thrusters will all help - but technique is key.

Also you need to work hard consistently & over time. 10 mins a few times a week is no good.

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2023 19:21

I agree that you should do it under supervision.

BerfyTigot · 15/06/2023 23:06

Yeah I think I'm just a bit lazy to work at it hard!
Also I hate being lectured at by young and beautiful people 😀

BerfyTigot · 15/06/2023 23:06

Like Chloe Maddley

Houseplantmad · 15/06/2023 23:13

Yes you can. I’m 58 and have tightened up my arms but I do 3-4 strength training workouts a week of about 30-40 mins each. I’ve still developed the crepey skin which I hate but keep well moisturised but the bingo wings are no more.
I do Annie Deadman workouts which are on YouTube.

Houseplantmad · 15/06/2023 23:13

Meant to add, I also use protein powder to up my protein to aid muscle growth.

Spudlover · 15/06/2023 23:15

It depends. They can get smaller but they will never be toned and tight if the skin is stretched. I have improved mine but will never be confident sleeveless. I lift heavy weights with a PT twice a week but they’re still not great.

Crabbyk · 15/06/2023 23:21

Weights will help you build definition and make you feel more positive about your body. You can never properly tighten anything though, only way is cosmetic surgery.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 15/06/2023 23:24

Well even Madonna has bingo wings, I remember her being interviewed several years ago and she was waving to the crowd and she had ‘the flap’ if she can’t manage it with her vigorous exercise regime then mere mortals have no hope.
