To think the dress is toast

Shameless hope for traffic.

Brand new gingham style uniform dress. Viscose/polyester mix (I know). Whiteboard marker. All over. Definitely ‘dried on’ in this weather.

Am I unreasonable? Is there hope? I’ve never succeeded at washing it out before… If I can, what do I do??!

Thanks in advance!

It is not for laundry, but has removed pen, grease, curry and stains of unknown origin from clothing, natural and manmade fibres for me - try Grease Away, the yellow liquid costs about £1.50ish. It is my spray of last resort and has yet to fail.

Ha! Puts me in mind of the largest lingerie department in Ireland…

We always say 'Ah now Ted' in an Irish accent when we're in M and S lingerie dept.😁

SmokyForTheWin · 15/06/2023 16:39

Nail varnish remover?

TheMrsColumbo · 15/06/2023 16:40

MrsLilaAmes · 15/06/2023 16:16

Ooh, where do I get that from @TheMrsColumbo ?

I buy it from Amazon or online chemists.

Nope, but I'd be interested to know if there is a way as this happened to my daughters new school summer dress last year and I couldn't get it out.

I've found Covid hand gel surprisingly good at removing some stains (because of the alcohol I suppose). Nice to find a use for my stock of it.

Ye high levels of isopropanol
alternatively just buy a bottle of isopropanol (99%). Damn useful stuff to have around. You should use it to clean all electronics and screens as it won’t damage electrical circuit boards - it’s what is used professionally.
great on shower screens outside (inside water marks best with vinegar) and mirrors
every house should have a bottle.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 15/06/2023 16:55

Hairspray, Covid hand gel, vodka etc are all working with same thing: Alcohol
sure use these if you have them
but isopropanol is the neat form (well 99.9% neat) - sometimes known as rubbing alcohol.

PuddlesPityParty · 15/06/2023 17:03

I got red marker out of a cream blazer with the pink stuff stain remover

MrsLilaAmes · 15/06/2023 20:05

Thanks very much all - both informative and entertaining. I have a little hope...

Get another from Asda, they are only a couple of £. Probably cheaper than trying pads of different products in loads of washes. Still use the old one but will show you have more than one 😆

Actually try this - I use it to clean the whiteboards in school now. Better than the cif or dedicated wb cleaner I used to use

Agree, girl’s gingham school dresses £5 in Sainsburys.
You need more than one surely.

Amazing! Can’t hurt to try

It contains Isopropynyl alcohol.

Same stuff that is used to clean keyboards, phones etc. You can buy 99% or less on Ebay, Amazon etc. It is very useful stuff. Add water and you have hand sanitiser (in case there is another killer virus),

chocspot · 15/06/2023 20:57

I usually have success with washing up liquid rubbed in to stains before washing. Elbow grease spray is good too.

Hairbrushhandle · 15/06/2023 20:58

Draw on it more. Pretend it's designer.

NEmama · 15/06/2023 21:02

Washing up liquid!

MrsLilaAmes · 15/06/2023 16:31

Ha! Cheap vodka!

Cheap vodka took almost all of a significant Sharpie mark out of my lovely cream silk blouse. Had to soak it for a couple of days, though. Use it neat. Don’t drink it, or have it near an open flame. 😜

Winter42 · 15/06/2023 21:15

Another vote for your leftover COVID hand gel. I rescued a suit jacket that had had a pen leak in the breast pocket with this.

Nikileigh · 15/06/2023 21:35

Needmoresunshine · 15/06/2023 16:22

Hairspray all over the pen and then wash. This got sharpie off one of my kids uniforms.

I do this for my nurses uniforms too and my kids uniforms. Spray with hair spray until the ink runs then straight in the washer. Job done

MrsLilaAmes · 15/06/2023 21:42

Maybe I need to reinvest in hairspray. I never use it on my hair but I used to keep it around as cheap fixing spray for charcoal and chalk drawings… Not much time for that of late.

Update: I used the hand sanitizer as I had that in the house already. It’s not perfect, but it has made a huge difference- better than any previous time. She can certainly get away with wearing it for the rest of the term. Thank you all!
