Hopefully the imagine has added...

All my t-shirts are getting the same pattern of holes in the bottom (see photo) like little punctures. Is it from my washing machine? I can't see anything obvious to cause it and it's driving me mad as I don't want to pay £100s for a new washing machine if I'm not sure that is it, but some of my favourite t-shirts have been ruined (and I'm starting to look like a bit of a tramp as all my clothes have holes....)

I don't think it's moths as I haven't see any (despite leaving out traps) and woollens and silks are unaffected

So AIBU to buy a new washing machine based On this?

YANBU - it's the washing machine, buy a new one
YABU - it's moths you idiot. It will never stop. Burn all your clothes and run!

Leaning against a granite counter top, with a belt on, or even the button off your jeans etc

IamSallyBowles · 15/06/2023 17:36

Happened lots to me - drove me crazy...

stopped after lockdown and wfh

so have decided that it is a combination of seatbelt (not driving as much), lanyard/desk rubbing on button/belt (wear elasticated loungewear at home)...

Clothes pegs?

Clothes pegs?

Yes, came here to say the same.

Itsadilemma · 15/06/2023 17:44

I had this too and couldn't figure it out until I checked my seatbelt and saw there were a couple of knobbly bits!

PuppyMonkey · 15/06/2023 18:01

My seatbelt doesn’t go anywhere near where the holes are. I don’t peg washing out any more. It’s the Jean button/worktop thing. Honestly, it is. This is why I have lots of the holes whereas my DDs don’t.

autieawesome · 15/06/2023 18:15

I get this alway assume washing machine

Kaftanesque · 15/06/2023 18:16

I get these on my cotton T shirts.I have come to the conclusion that it's where my jeans fasten up and the seat belt combined rub .However it's more prevalent because generally I don't think the quality of most T shirt material is as good as it used to be.M&S in particular. I've spent more on organic better quality andits taken far longer for the holes to appear.

I wrote a very similar post about 5 years ago. I’d bought a brand new jumper and a brand new pair of jeans (different shops). After one wear, there were holes in the jumper at about waistband level. I couldn’t decide if the jeans were the problem (waistband or zip or button) or the jumper.

I still don’t know, but I can rule out moths (both items brand new and purchased within the last few days), seatbelt (hadn’t been in the car) and washing machine (neither item had been washed).

Yup, like someone else it only started when we changed from laminate to granite.

WellTidy · 15/06/2023 18:24

Can also rule out quartz worktop as we have laminate. And clothes pegs as neither item had been washed let alone pegged out.

coffin · 15/06/2023 18:25

I found out by deduction that holes in the same place in a few of my jumpers were caused by my watch strap snagging. Maybe this, OP?

Alwayswithalacrity · 15/06/2023 18:35

My husband used to have this problem, and once he stopped wearing a belt with a buckle it stopped happening! I think it was caused by the rubbing of the car’s seatbelt and his belt buckle.

nosykids · 15/06/2023 19:19

Sorry if someone had already said this but I think it is seatbelt + belt. I used to get this all the time and it stopped when I stopped wearing a belt.

mrsmop21 · 15/06/2023 19:21

They’re from leaning/rubbing against a stone worktop! I ruined about 30 tops before I realised what was causing it

goingtotown · 15/06/2023 20:43

I've noticed this with a few T-shirts when they've been through a 30 minute quick wash. Probably because the wash is more intense.

Wallywobbles · 15/06/2023 23:04

I have them too. I wonder if it's the kitchen surfaces having a spot that catches.

StrawberrySquash · 15/06/2023 23:41

I think it's belts. I've had fewer since I stopped wearing a belt. I think they top gets trapped between my desk and my belt when I'm at work.

BARBIEGIRL1980 · 26/08/2023 17:10

Omg I'm so glad i found your thread. I'm going mad thinking its my washing machine, moths, belt and i do think its definitely the work service. Every top i own in the same place it's happening to me. I'm gonna try an apron just see if it stops.

itsmylife7 · 26/08/2023 17:15

its either a belt or the pointy bit from mainly jeans. You'll have to do "the tuck " as just tuck the bit of the shirt in that rubs on the sticky out bit..French tuck ??

LadyBiker · 26/08/2023 17:20

I conducted my own experiment over time and always inspected tops before going in washing machine - all good with no holes, but when ironing have spotted the little holes, so have put it down to damage happening in washing machine. I put favourite tops in a pillowcase or laundry bag when washing and it prevents holes.

Fruitynutcase · 26/08/2023 18:00

Treading cats ?

Dinnerlady12 · 26/08/2023 18:04

This kept happening to me and I couldnt figure out why then one time I used fairy pods and one didn't dissolve properly. One of my t-shirts got stuck together because of it and when I peeled it apart it ended up with holes. I don't know whether that was cause every time though.

fetchacloth · 26/08/2023 18:11

It could be

Bra hooks
Rivets on jeans or trousers
Zips

Or it could be the door rim on the machine itself.

mathanxiety · 26/08/2023 19:38

It's not the washing machine or the holes would appear in spots other than just the bottom of T-shirts, and they would also appear in other cotton knit items like underwear.

It's definitely not moths either, or there would be holes on other spots too.

I blame tiny splashes of bleach or other cleaning products because of the location of the holes and also because I never saw them on DS's clothes until he started giving a helping hand around the kitchen as a teen.
