To go to A&E

Ds started with a small lump under his eyebrow a month and a half ago. GP thinks its a cyst and has prescribed 3 different antibiotic in the past 6 weeks and it has just grown larger and Ds is complaining that it is sore to touch and stings a bit when he is just going about his normal day. Would I be unreasonable to take him to A&E to be checked? reasons for going would be
1)Doctors think its a cyst but not 100% conclusive and no way of knowing
2)it is right above his eye and im scared its going to get bigger and affect his vision?
3)we are due to fly in 2 weeks and I’m scared of anything happening to it while we are there?

Not an A and E job but you can ask gp to refer.

ExtraOnions · 14/06/2023 23:01

This isn’t an Accident or an Emergency … so no, not appropriate for A&E.
Back to the GP, see if you can get a referral.

elmo89 · 14/06/2023 23:03

He has been referred to dermatology and flagged as urgent but who knows how long we could wait on that!

Of course it’s not an A and E situation. It’s neither an accident or an and emergency for gods sake. No wonder the system is under such strain

VerticalSausages · 14/06/2023 23:03

But if the GP is refusing to refer, I would take to A&E. Surprised they haven’t referred already after this long and 3 different antibiotics.

Anon6842 · 14/06/2023 23:04

Not sure about A & E as it could be a very long and uncomfortable wait- unless of course your child is in severe pain/ disturbed vision etc..but it’s still your choice. I would definitely make another appointment to see GP for a referral though, especially if your going away soon.
Hope it gets resolved soon.

VerticalSausages · 14/06/2023 23:04

OK cross-post! Just wait for dermatology then!

Kinneddar · 14/06/2023 23:04

Thats a GP call not A&E.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 14/06/2023 23:04

Is it an Accident? Is it an Emergency? I think the answer is no to both questions, so please don't waste hours of your time in A&E taking up the time of doctors and nurses who are needed for real ACCIDENTS & EMERGENCIES. Just go back to your doctor and tell them you feel it needs more urgent attention now, and if they can't fix it, can they refer you to someone who can.

YukoandHiro · 14/06/2023 23:04

Not a&e. Go to a minor injuries type walk in if you want second opinion.

Lostinplaces · 14/06/2023 23:06

A&E won’t do anything. They’ll prod it a bit and tell you go back to your GP. You’ll waste your own time and theirs.

GrazingSheep · 14/06/2023 23:06

Are you concerned that it is a malignant growth? If you are I would classify that as an emergency

Kinneddar · 14/06/2023 23:06

If its been referred to dermatology you need to wait for that. A&E isn't a way to fast track other departments.

Right so he has a referral, all A&E would do if they saw him would be to tell you to wait for the appointment.

A&E really is for accidents or emergencies, it's not a quick way in the side door.

But a&e wouldn't do anything about that, a paediatric cyst on an eyebrow would not be treated in a&M&S

CoachBeardsJane · 14/06/2023 23:08

A&e

elmo89 · 14/06/2023 23:09

I’m concerned of the lump that has just recently formed on my 6 year old’s face and doctor’s can’t be certain what it is. That’s my main concern incase it is something else as GPs cant be sure.

JaneNormanBag · 14/06/2023 23:10

is paying to go private an option? It’s not really an a&e matter

That is why he has been referred to the relevant specialist, who is not in A&E.

Retrievemysanity · 14/06/2023 23:13

The GP has referred him though so you need to wait for that appointment.

MissHoollie · 14/06/2023 23:14

Did you post this a few days ago?
I'd honestly see if a sterile needle can pop it

mauveiscurious · 14/06/2023 23:14

It looks like a boil, hot flannels were traditionally used to bring these out. My DD used to gave them on his neck

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 14/06/2023 23:16

I know you're probably feeling anxious OP. I have lots of health anxiety when it comes to my children. However, you've done the correct thing and there's a referral pending so please try and relax a little. It's your anxiety making you panic. Ignore any rude replies. You've done nothing wrong by asking a question like this.

Copyandpaste83 · 14/06/2023 23:17

Could you go to a walk in centre tomorrow with him. 111 would be able to make you a appointment. If you are travelling abroad I would tell your travel insurance just incase anything happens. Hope he is ok
