Plastic stickers in swimwear/underwear are pointless

Something I’ve always been confused about is how do small plastic stickers that barely cover the gussets of swimwear and knickers provide any hygeine benefit? Firstly they don’t cover the whole area, secondly if they are being tried on with the sticker then still able to be returned then someone else will just try it on also with the sticker… it just makes no sense.

I wear clean knickers when I try on but I bet many don’t and in any swimwear haul videos online they don’t wear anything underneath…

am I missing something?

I always imagine it’s more just as a visual reminder to wear knickers when trying, because the thought of not -and having that plastic strip against your undercarriage-is off putting for people.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 14/06/2023 22:50

Totally agree with you OP, and like you, I wear knickers while trying anything on like this. Then if I buy the item, I wash it as soon as I get home, as you never know what other people have done when trying on.

CC4712 · 14/06/2023 22:50

I agree that they do nothing. I always wear underwear when trying on swimwear.

Joe Lycett did a show last year where they ordered clothes online (I think Bohoo)- removed the gusset sticker, added 'stains' and re-ordered the clothes, to find them being sold with obvious soiling on them 😝

It means that once I’ve tried them on and then bought them, I can take the sticker off and wear them, knowing that bit hasn’t been against anyone’s bits.

Lacucuracha · 14/06/2023 22:54

Not sure what else you want them to do? Just run it through a hot wash before wearing without underwear.

@CindersAgain but they don’t cover the whole area so there’s still going to be areas that do have germs on

@Lacucuracha if the expectation is that you should wash before wearing then why can they not be returned without a sticker then? That’s my point.. completely useless

Plenty of people do try them on without underwear on. I work in the clothing industry and the amount of swimwear that has to be written off as 'shop soiled' is disgusting

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/06/2023 23:27

I once saw a woman in the communal changing rooms in a shop trying on jeans with no pants on 🤮

Ellie450 · 14/06/2023 23:33

Apparently they are supposed to remove the hygiene liner after each try on/return and replace it with a new one. At least, that’s what I was told at a shop in the US. They had sheets and sheets of new ones to use.

I’d imagine that the workers often want no part of it though and frankly I don’t blame them.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 14/06/2023 23:38

i went swimsuit shopping this week and spent half the time peeling the fuckers off my legs 😬

I’m taking the view that most people wear pants to try them on. And the main bit is covered. I don’t think I’m going to catch anything from a swimsuit, it’s just the thought. And the strip is enough for me - it would catch any actual discharge.

JustDanceAddict · 15/06/2023 07:02

I keep my undies on & I would hope most do. I’ve never contracted a disease this way so it’s not something I think about really.

This. Though I'm probably washing first anyway

Neverinamonthofsundays · 15/06/2023 07:12

I have never tried on knickers nor swimsuits. I know what size my arse is so I just buy that size. I always wash them before putting them on too so never thought about it till now.

nothingcomestonothing · 15/06/2023 07:57

Are they in men's underwear/ swim wear? Or is it only womens?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 15/06/2023 08:03

The problem is with trying swimwear on wearing knickers is that they don't sit the same. Agree about plastic sticker coming off too.

Well, there is a fundamental difference between men and women's genitals.

But someone else can't wash them before trying them on.

Yes but it's not like men's underwear area is any cleaner than women's, is it? The plastic strip has always seemed a bit 'women are so gross and oozy' to me.

Well, they are wetter down there than men aren't they? It's basic biology! Do you want to try pants on that someone has put their moist vulva on? Some people are wetter than others and it varies during the month.

SoupDragon · 15/06/2023 08:40

It's not saying they are gross, although I bet most women wouldn't want any sort of contract with a stranger's secretions in this context.
