10 month old drinking too much milk?

When my DH collected my DD from nursery yesterday they recommended we lower the amount of formula milk she has in a day. We are doing the recommended 24oz so she has 4oz when she wakes up, 2 5oz bottles for naps and 7oz for bed.

The reason they gave for this was that she started out at nursery (2 months ago) smaller than another baby around the same age and DD is now bigger.

The problem I have is that DD actually lost a lot of centiles when she was 4 months (due to issues with breastfeeding), so at 8 months she was just about getting back to where she should be.

AIBU to not want to compare how my baby grows compares to another? Or should I follow their advice?

I guess I just don't agree with the nursery's reasoning, especially as DD was behind in the gaining weight department.

That sounds a lot to me as presumably at 10 months is on proper meals also but I would speak to the HV personally. I think her being bigger than another baby is totally irrelevant though.

I'd consider moving nurseries, you can't have your daughter in the care of people that stupid.

DustyLee123 · 14/06/2023 07:22

Agree with pp, she should be eating more so not needing as much milk, that sounds like a lot.

DustyLee123 · 14/06/2023 07:23

And they shouldn’t be comparing kids like that.

Thanks all, I have just checked the recommended amount and I should have been on less already so I will work on that now! Clueless sleep deprived FTM here! 😂

We are doing the recommended 24oz

Where is it recommended? By 12months she shouldn't be on any formula so 4 bottles at 10 months seems like a lot.
Realistically if she is filling up on 4 bottles that is probably the cause of her not eating much.

Hazelnuttella · 14/06/2023 08:39

She probably doesn’t need that much milk. But it’s really weird and unprofessional of the nursery to compare her to another child.

canigetitmyself · 14/06/2023 08:43

If you get a day off, take her to a drop in baby weigh place and have a chat with an HV

Amskis · 14/06/2023 09:03

@Sissynova She eats all of her food, nursery are saying that she's gaining too much weight. It's just the comparison that's bothering me. I thought 24oz was recommended until 12 months, but I have double checked and seen that I'm wrong about that!

I worked for some time in paediatric nutrition and noticed that this is a common issue. I understand you had some issues when baby was younger... and definitely each baby has its own development curve. but often mummies that noticed that their babies didn't have much appetite for solids found that when they reduced the baby's milk intake, they ate far more. baby's will eat when they are hungry (unlike adults, many of us carry on eating despite being full eg. me). Don't worry too much, she will catch up really fast once she is eating more solids :-)

I see I totally misunderstood the first post. l am not sure I would worry so much about a 10 month old 'gaining too much weight', she is probably going through a growth spurt. if she is eating, it's because she needs it. if milk is reduced, she will probably need more solids?

dementedpixie · 14/06/2023 14:56

Its 400 mls that's recommended at that age which is around 13 or so ounces. I think my 2 just had milk morning and night at that age and got the rest of their intake through dairy products, milk in cereal, etc

At my babies 9 month check a few weeks ago I was told he should be having between 21 -24oz a day, he was consuming a bit more than that, he was struggling a bit with lumpy foods, gagging and projectile because he'd panic about swallowing it. Fast forward 4 weeks and he's come on leaps and bounds, 3 bottles a day, not always finishing, managing more water, will try anything he's given, and managing a lot more with finger foods, we can't eat anything now without him wanting a taste 😅.
Don't worry about what the nursery are saying, just trying passing her more finger foods and fruit, the more she fills up on that she won't want as much milk.
It'll all work out in the end that's what I say to myself when it's,being getting me down.

And I bet she just drank whatever milk you offered to her. 😂
