Certain music past a certain age with children

We have 3 kids, and we're "moshers".
Do we want our kids hearing about c9ke lines -rap(?) And self harm?
Or do we just subject our selves to pop music for 16/18 years. How does this work?

We’re selective about which songs get played in the house and anything too dubious is headphones only.

LittleBrownJug · 14/06/2023 00:32

I can’t stop playing Cuff It as it happens but I’m going to have to before DC works it out.

also Padam Padam has adult themes but I told DC Kylie was probably too hot.

I mean I personally don't enjoy music about coke, rape and self harm so my Alexa has an easier job but I do find the explicit filter helps with people who like to sing "fuck" (looking at you Pink)

Basically you need to find something you like that's age appropriate so no swear words, no violence etc until they're old enough to understand its in a song, it's about X, we don't use that language at school etc.

They'll develop their own taste anyway after 4 years of Baby Shark and you'll never get a look in

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 14/06/2023 01:15

Easy. You listen to it when they are not around. Or quit listening to that trash anyway.

Dartmoorcheffy · 14/06/2023 01:20

Listen it when they aren't there .

OnNaturesCourse · 14/06/2023 01:20

Certain topics in music we avoid (references to sex etc) but swearing we are not concerned with. Our children are 6 and under. They know these words as "adult" words.

You can filter most music on apps.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/06/2023 01:35

Be selective. For example, from bitter experience the only NWA song without swearing is Express Yourself. So DD heard that early but the other stuff later.

The message is also important. I'd rather she heard decent protest rap with lots of swearing rather than misogynist rap with none or Drake, I want her to have taste.

Anything not age appropriate I listen to on headphones or when dc not around.

I love music from many different genres. So, I don’t think that you have to subject yourselves to pop music if you don’t want to.

You could explore and expand you and your children’s music appreciation by listening to different genres and different cultural music.

Many of the metal and hard rock fans that I know also love classical music. Give Beethoven a chance.

Try a little jazz (there are many different styles of jazz), reggae, brass bands, alternative music, etc.

Explore different cultures. Putumayo World Music is good. 🎼🎶🎤🎧💃🏻🕺🪩

Oh, and there is plenty of rap music suitable for kids. What about my all time favourite: Rappers delight by Sugarhill Gang. It’s awesome.

This life-long musician loves heavy metal. YABVU dismissing it as "trash".

lakesummer · 14/06/2023 02:08

From 13 on they start hiding their lyrics from you.
Or saying you might like this but ignore the bad ignore the bad words!

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 14/06/2023 02:15

@knowthescore I didn't dismiss a whole genre of music. I just choose not to fill my mind listening to songs referencing rape and self harm. I consider that trash music no matter if it's pop, rap or some other type of music.

Phoebo · 14/06/2023 02:44

I think Spotify can filter out songs with explicit lyrics

How dare musicians write songs about their own experiences of depression and self-harm!

So you don't listen to Me And A Gun by Tori Amos, or Polly by Nirvana, or Britten's Rape Of Lucretia?

Writing about something doesn't mean endorsing it.
