28 degrees in my flat tonight

It's 28 degrees in my bedroom tonight, living room is 26.

I've got a 3 week old DD who seems so clammy and hot. She's been in nothing but a nappy since I took a little vest off of her at lunchtime.

Her Moses is in the living room and I'm going to sleep on the sofa as it's a little cooler, we have all windows open and seems to be a tiny breeze although still hot.

I'm worried she'll get cold, also worried she'll overheat, this is it now isn't it lol we just worry forever once we have children!

Will she wake me by fussing or crying if she gets cold? I feel like I know nothing about parenting and I tried for 9 years for her!

A bit chilly is much better than too warm. She would let you know if she was feeling cold, don’t worry!

Minfilia · 13/06/2023 23:33

I have 4 kids aged 16-19 and I still have no idea what to do with any of them 🤣

but yes cool is better than warm. That doesn’t sound fun to negotiate with such a small one!

if she’s cold or hot she will cry. It sounds like you’re doing the best thing you can!

Tigofigo · 13/06/2023 23:35

Did you keep curtains and windows closed all day? Have you got thick curtains?

Suggest you open all your windows and curtains in your bedroom now, then close them in the morning and keep closed. Stops it getting so hot.

As pp says better to be a bit chilly than too warm. I'd let her sleep in a nappy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/06/2023 23:36

Just have a cotton sheet on her she'll be fine . Hope you get some sleep

LuckyPaisley · 13/06/2023 23:43

She might not cry if she gets a bit cold - mine slept while feeling cold, but in this heat she's not going to get dangerously cold so she'll be okay. And she's likely still waking a lot through the night so you can check regularly.

But yes this is it now. No matter what we say tonight you're going to be on edge checking all night. Once you get used to this something else will be along to worry you. Accept your fate.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/06/2023 23:49

She might be cooler in a vest rather than with nothing on. Congratulations on your new baby!

elm26 · 13/06/2023 23:51

We do keep curtains closed in day and then open them and windows once temp drops but it's still so hot here. Currently googling air con units! 🤣

I've left her in a nappy with a light muslin cloth wrapped around her middle/under her arms as she doesn't like her arms being under anything. Hopefully she'll be okay like that.

Nobody prepared me on just how much you worry about 😅

You worry less as you tick things off your bingo card if new experiences. It isn't always this full on.

Agree with PPs that it's not a night where she'll get too cold.

elm26 · 13/06/2023 23:53

Oh also noticed a lot more wet nappies today and yesterday but she's eating more, would that be because of the heat and is it a good sign that she's weeing alot?

Plenty of wet nappies is a good sign she's not dehydrating.

If she is bottle fed and seems thirsty you can offer cooked boiled water, but normally the advice is it's not necessary for breast milk, because it self-adjusts consistency.

Daisymae55 · 13/06/2023 23:58

It’s far safer for baby to be a bit cold than too warm. I spent all of last summer so stressed about our baby so totally relate to this. Husband and I still have nightly debates about what she should be wearing at bedtime in this heat. (No the worry doesn’t stop I’m afraid, but that shows how much you care 💕)

if she gets cold she will let you know. Then you can add a layer if needed. Our 15 month old is in a vest and that’s it (rooms a tad cooler than yours though). It’s far better for her to wake you because she’s chilly than for her to overheat. Do you have a large muslin you could use as a light blanket? One of the best things we were given was a very fine muslin swaddle (essentially a giant rectangle of muslin that we could tuck down the sides of her matress and use as a super lightweight blanket rather than a swaddle). It was perfect for last years heatwave as it covered her a little without her getting too hot

make sure she gets plenty of fluids! If she wakes offer her a feed. DD is waking up most nights for a drink at the moment which is very unlike her.

also, congratulations! 💕

We got an air con unit for our room when DD1 was a baby. That was 2019 and we are still using it now. It's a bloody godsend to have one room in the house nice and cool and was well worth the money. I hate being too hot to sleep.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 14/06/2023 00:14

@elm26

You are doing a really good job.

Plenty of wet nappies is good. I used to just pop a muslin over my DD in heat like this (shes now 18).

Not sure that's the advice these days, just more milk now iirc but happy to he corrected. Plenty of wet nappies is great OP.

I googled, I'm wrong so ignore me! I'm sure they changed it for a bit,not sure I'd have made that up 😂

when mine were small and we had issues with heat (canada in the summer can be brutal and that is where we lived then) I took a ceep tupperware container that was filled with ice.. put it WELL above babies bed and turned an oscilating fan on low over it. it cooled the air. DO not obvs aim it at baby. I had mine on a chair and then the fan was still at least 3 feet over the crib. Not direct on baby just circulating the air.
