To ask you to settle this?! Dressing toddler for bed in this heat!

2.5 year old. Usually still in cot with sleeping bag. His room is the coolest in the house and is currently 27degrees. During all this good weather, the most the temp had dropped in his room overnight has been down 2degrees from what it was when he went down to bed. Today is the hottest day we’ve had so far.

Simple question really - is 27 degrees (potentially dropping to 25 overnight) warm enough to just have 2.5year old in a nappy with nothing else?

If yes, what would you dress them in?

Yes fine. He will wake up if cold but that is unlikely.

Smartieegg · 13/06/2023 21:29

My husband and I debated this for like 45 mins lol. Our currently in a vest and very lightweight bag, with cold fan turned up full blasting him. Room saying 26 degrees, but his cheeks feel cool just been in to check

Time4achangeagain · 13/06/2023 21:31

Mine is in long sleeved cotton pyjamas and nothing else

apparently you shouldn’t leave a fan full on anyone. Best to have it moving back and forth and on a lower setting. Have a Google. I feel like I remember that advice quite clearly

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/06/2023 21:33

Mine would have been in a nappy and vest with their 0.5 tog sleeping bag.
both have duvets now so just kick it off if hot.

LillyLeaf · 13/06/2023 21:36

My nearly 3 year old is wearing shorts and tee pyjamas. When it gets a bit darker I'll open his window until we go to bed. He seems fine.

Ooooh I didn't know that!! Thank you for telling me!! Will go move it back a bit now 👍🏻👍🏻

LittleBumblebee3 · 13/06/2023 21:44

Thanks everyone 😊😅 DS always runs warm. Room was 26 when he went to bed last night and he requested a nappy and tshirt then woke me up an hour after I went to bed to tell me he had taken his tshirt off because it was “like a toaster” 🤣 I’m assuming he meant he was warm!
Tonights request was “just a nappy and nothing else mum!” 😅
Hes more than capable of telling me if he’s not feeling comfy in the night. There’s shorts & tshirt pjs and a light sleeping bag sitting next to the cot as options incase he wakes up cold. I know he’ll shout and tell me if he is.

Ive tried (very unsuccessfully) to introduce a pillow and a duvet for about 6 months 🤣 he is just not interested AT ALL 😅 so any tips and tricks for that will be gratefully received 🙈

The reason for my post - My mum popped in to drop something off on her way home from work and caught sight of him on the video monitor and OH MY 😳 you’d think I’d put him down to sleep in a bed of nails 🙈 he needs layers! He’ll be freezing in the night! Poor boy will get ill!

I would do nappy & .5tog sleeping bag. If they are used to bag it is very hard for them to go without

Newmum110 · 13/06/2023 21:48

Just read your update. Sounds like he knows exactly what he wants so go with that & ignore your mum!!!!!!

StillMedusa · 13/06/2023 21:51

My little grandson has just been in a nappy at night since last week... and still is sweating , but he seems to run hot anyway! But it's been 29 degrees all day and not much cooler now so a duvet seems a bit pointless.
If he gets cold he'll sneak in to Mum and Dad anyway Grin

kirsty2023 · 13/06/2023 21:52

3 year old in night time pull up and nothing else and 6 month old in a nappy and vest with fan on to keep the air as cool as I can x

Saschka · 13/06/2023 21:54

Mine wears short pyjamas, and a light sheet/empty duvet cover over the top. Same as us, actually. We have a fan on in the room to keep the air moving.

blahblahlandgoogoodoll · 13/06/2023 21:56

My 3 year old is in t-shirt & short pjs (doesn't wear nappies anymore or anything). No duvet etc, windows open & fan on.

9 month old is in nappy & short sleeved vest (will otherwise take nappy off). No sleeping bag. Windows open and fan on.

Both they're bedrooms are about 27 degrees right now.

Last night temp dropped to about 24 by 2am so I covered baby with a thin blanket but he just kicked it off anyway. Toddler had covered himself up with duvet by 0530 when I was up.

My baby is only 6 months, but a nightmare with nightmares sleeping bag. All flailing limbs and crawling around. Too hot here tonight though I think, it is 29 degrees upstairs.

GAW19 · 13/06/2023 21:57

My 2.3yo and 4yo are both in thin shorts and T-shirt pj's. They do have their thin duvet on their beds but only because they like to fall asleep with them, 5mins later they've been kicked off to the end of the bed.
DD4 would happily take her clothes off if she wakes up hot, DD2 will probably come into me or shout for help.
I will be swapping their duvets for just a thin blanket this week though Smile

Glitterstars · 13/06/2023 21:58

I put mine in just nappy last night. It was roasting but he woke up at 11 and felt quite cold. Have gone for short sleeved vest tonight

Bedtimemode · 13/06/2023 22:00

I always did just a nappy in hot weather, never had any disasters. We switched to a duvet when the weather got cold again, the sleeping bag went away in the summer and never came back

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/06/2023 22:02

He sounds like he knows what he wants and he’ll wake if he’s cold. Ignore your mum.

Rightnowstraightaway · 13/06/2023 22:13

Mine is the salary is the same age and is being extremely adamant that they must sleep naked! So I let them. Clearly knows their own mind!

Has a thin blanket but they've kicked it off. I'll put it back on when I go to bed.

No tips for using a duvet or pillow I'm afraid - we used blankets from birth. I gave them a pillow when they went in to the toddler bed as they started asking for one. I slept without a pillow for years as an adult (I'm a front sleeper so it's much more comfy without) so if he doesn't want one I wouldn't worry.

mobear · 13/06/2023 22:15

My 2.5 year old is just in his nappy tonight. He doesn’t like sleeping bags and kicks off any covers. He’s been like this the last few nights and perfectly fine.

LT2 · 14/06/2023 07:58

Temp was 26-27 when my 17 month old went to bed and he wore vest and nappy (co-sleep)

FlounderingFruitcake · 14/06/2023 08:13

Now is the best time to introduce the duvet because it’s probably too hot for it anyway! Just leave it at the bottom of his bed and he can pull it up if cold in the early hours, or you can cover him whilst he’s a sleep if you check and he feels chilly. It’s definitely easier than doing it in winter when they will be cold if they don’t stay under it but can’t see sense because toddlers be toddlers!
