Why don’t online models have normal shapes grrrr

Disappointedly wrapping up 4 dresses from John Lewis to return - all looked horrendous on me but lovely on the models and I was excited to try them on. Why can’t some models have breasts, a tummy, be nearly 60 etc. grrr. They could eg have one perfect model and then a couple of other more normal people wearing the dresses. People’s’ return rates must be so high, unless they are a perfect shape.

I don’t think many folk think they will look like the model if they wear the dress she’s wearing do they? That it will hang the same? Most folks know their bodies and of course there are returns as often things don’t sit well or we don’t like in real life. But I don’t think we think we will miraculously look anywhere close to what the model looks like?

No but we can't always tell if our 34E Biobs will fit in the bodice etc when looking at a 32B model

They do have normal shapes. They just don't have your shape (which is also a normal shape).

The models don't particularly look like me either but most people have a sense of what will and will not work for them.

There is always the foolproof alternative of actually going to the shops and trying things on before buying, of course.

Not helpful when many retailers don't have bricks and mortar shops

Then seek out ones that do. The perks of online shopping are a) convenience and b) choice. But they often come with the big downside of c) poor quality and fit. If you want to avoid C you need to avoid online shopping.

Besides, OP said her dresses were from John Lewis, which has many brick and mortar stores.

I think I just get hacked off with being told I'm big therefore unhealthy 😅 I literally cannot be any smaller than my stupid ribcage allows!

Sorry I should have been clearer - at my height of 5”2 a size 16 isn’t healthy - apologies!

PurplePear7 · 13/06/2023 15:13

I’m 5ft8 and size 8 and a bit fed up of people implying I’m not ‘normal’ or not ‘a real woman’.

That said I would encourage retailers to have more diversity of models.

The issue is even if you are the same height/weight as the model on the website, everyone is different so you’re never going look exactly the same anyway. For example, I have a long body so even if the model is 5ft8 I can’t be confident that trousers/skirts will be the same length on me!

PussGirl · 13/06/2023 15:20

Most overweight women now are not "curvy" as in "have a definite out-in-out with bust-waist-hips" but have their waist as their biggest measurement / same measurement as bust with smaller hips.

I have no idea where they buy their clothes - certainly I never see a model of that shape.

RattyHealy · 13/06/2023 15:22

@Thesunnymood I'm really confused about your replies to me. My point about Snag was that whilst the OP was complaining about stick thin models, lots of others don't want to see a fat woman.

Then you corrected me about Snag and what I'd seen and was wrong.

Not sure what your point is or what you understand mine to be?

I very much agree with this.

The fashion industry means that your kind of normal is over-represented, but it is still one of the kinds of normal.

Although please do also be understanding that at least you are on the beneficial end of industry laziness, and as you can see on this thread, there are plenty of nasty attitudes to women of other healthy and normal body shapes.

I am definitively abnormal (extreme hourglass - hipbones and shoulders both 2" outside of the top of the normal range). It's very disappointing to see people being cunty about different body shapes.

But these days they even mostly stick a fake bump on a model for maternity wear, when it's very normal for the ribcage/chest to increase.

Which is entirely down to the logistical nightmare of planning a shoot around a model being a certain pregnancy gestation and not being able to easily deal with delays or last minute substitutions.

It's funny that all of the actual maternity specialists can manage to source a pregnant model though?

And that only fashion brands stick a fake bump on a tiny woman? (whilst draping her in the same old boring floral tents as the rest)

Again, I know it's a business. But I'd rather they did the job properly or not at all.

Screamingabdabz · 13/06/2023 15:34

I’ve bought more clothing from Free People based on the people in review photos than I ever did the skinny beautiful models. You can see what it looks like on short, tall, hips, boobs, dark, blonde etc. so helpful to see photos of ‘real’ women of all body types in real lighting and standing properly. YANBU.

Beebops3 · 13/06/2023 16:18

I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has been mentioned already but have a look at popsy clothing. They use real customers as models. They have a fb group where people post pix all the time and to be honest, it's those pix that sell the dresses to me.

Some of these comments are utterly ridiculous and actually just nasty.

All from the top page of M&S new items. All perfectly healthy body types.
Which of these might as well be a man??
Not all women have a HH bust, and it doesn't make them a man if they don't.

Again why must women resort to the insults? Comparing women to men because they have a different figure?

Seems like there are some properly shitty attitudes from other women towards those of us with very small breasts. Proper scorn, at least that's what it sounds like.

Conversely, I've never had that from men.

It's really rude isn't it

LuciferRising · 13/06/2023 21:18

Had a quick scan through some of the new arrivals for M&S and couldn't spot 'stick thin - could be a man.' Just healthy women and thankfully non of them look to be sporting the heroin chick look of the models from the 90s. Appeared to be a reasonable representation of different body sizes too?

I get it is annoying if your particular shape isn't there. Mine never is. I am convinced many petite models are not that short and never under 5 feet but I just try stuff on and huff, and hope AI will fix it while I still care.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen you are describing my (almost) 18 year old daughter. I can assure you she is normal, just very tall and slim like her parents and siblings.

Just because there aren't lots of something doesn't mean it is 'normal'.

This. Many of my DD's friends and acquaintances are like this, and so is DD. (These young women are mostly 18 to 29 years old.) Tall, leggy, model-build, model looks, very striking. There are many girls/young women out there who look like this.

As I said, the mean and spiteful comments about how tall, thin/slim size 6 to 10 women cannot POSSIBLY be attractive and are not 'real women' speaks volumes about the women saying this. You clearly have a problem with not looking like this, but don't diss those women who DO look like this. They are just as much of a REAL WOMAN as you are. The 'only real women have curves' bollocks is outdated and insulting and nasty.

Green doesn't suit you. It's not their problem that you have hang-ups about not looking like you wish to look. LIKE THEM!
