To think full vomit charge was unreasonable?

So my friend vomited in the taxi home from a night out last weekend. She was in the front seat and a very small amount of sick went on the gear stick. The driver stopped quickly and she opened the door and continued getting sick outside. The driver wiped the bit of vomit from the gear stick with a tissue. He charged us the full price of the soiling fee-180 euros. Now I totally think the fee is fair, don’t get me wrong, if someone throws up in the car. But this was only a small bit and he wiped it off so should
it have been maybe half the fee? Anyway, we paid and that’s that. I guess I’m just wondering AIBU to think maybe she should have got a partial charge instead? Or am I totally wrong! I do understand it’s horrible for the driver to have any amount of bodily fluids in their vehicle!

If she was sick from drinking then consider it a dickhead tax.

changeyerheadworzel · 14/06/2023 21:00

You spray, you pay.

Vile.

10HailMarys · 14/06/2023 21:06

You should absolutely have to pay the full fee. Firstly because it’s utterly disgusting for the driver to have to deal with, in any circumstances, and secondly because it’s not just about how much vomit there was and where it went. If someone throws up, they’re spewing germs and tiny saliva droplets etc everywhere. You can’t necessarily see that with the naked eye, but along with the fact that the car would stink, it does mean the driver has to get the car fully cleaned. It also probably meant the driver couldn’t pick up another fare after yours and probably had to go home, so they’ve lost earnings.

Supergirl1958 · 14/06/2023 21:20

I was charged full price for leaning over a bottle of water to be sick out of a taxi and the contents squeezed on the back seat. I had travelled on a ferry to Dublin for my friends hen do and had been travel sick, but was never sick in the taxi. I was very upset …it was only water, so I do think it was right!

Florabeebaby · 14/06/2023 21:21

Disgusting. My DH is a taxi driver and can tell you that cleaning up vomit is the worst!! The fee is 100% justified.
Taxi drivers get so much shit thrown at them without having to clean up after drunken idiots on top of it all! 🤬

3 words..loss of earnings. That car is out of action until it's dry. Taxi drivers are self-emlpoyed. No car, no customers, no income.

Motherofalittledragon · 14/06/2023 22:00

If I had to wipe up some randoms vomit in my car I'd charge maximum amount too, just what you want when you go to work.

I doubt very much if he did any more cleaning to his car because he was too busy rubbing his hands with glee!
I bet he was chuffed to fuck when you paid up the full " I have produced a gallon of diced carrots all over the back seat and filled up the footwell with second hand vodka" but I also don't see how it could have been argued.
He should have charged you €50 max, but if I had been him and thought I could get €180 I would have charged that too

MadMadaMim · 14/06/2023 22:31

Poor driver. Vomiting from too much alcohol - totally gross behaviour. Just about forgiveable if you're 16 maybe. I found it difficult enough to clean my children's vomit. No way could I clean a stranger's no matter how little.

I'd have made you pay and left you where you were.

Dovetail40 · 14/06/2023 22:34

Sabrina145 · 12/06/2023 23:27

@Redebs I understand that of course. In this case it was a small bit on that one area and he cleaned it off. Nothing on fabric, floor etc

'Small bit' of someone's vomit on his property in which he has have deep cleaned so he can carry other passengers.

Get a grip and stop whinging about this disgusting behaviour.

This 100%.

Respect someone's property.
How dare you think vomiting in someone's car is acceptable.

Dovetail40 · 14/06/2023 22:40

Bagpuss2022 · 13/06/2023 02:40

Hmmm I’m on the fence nasty for the driver but that does seem steep.
I paid £120 last autumn my DD was sick all over the back seat (no alcohol she’s too young for that yet! But it was allergic reaction to some food) he did waive the taxi fee though.
I will always be grateful to the taxi driver who took me home walked me up my drive made sure I was safe never charged me anything and I was sick all over his car but that was the 90s when people I think were kinder

People are kinder to clear up your vomit?

Take responsibility.
Drunk or not this is their work environment and frankly I would not be happy taking a journey in car that has not been deep cleaned after someone has vomited in.

If it my child, then my responsibility.
The driver will be out of pocket as he won't be able to work until.cleaned.

Why shouldn't I pay for that?

Meadowland · 14/06/2023 22:46

YABU Your friend needs to grow up and learn to stop drinking begord she gets into such a disgusting state.
Poor driver.

OP if you're prepared to get so shitfaced you puke in another person's vehicle, you should be prepared to pay the clean up charge without any question. It's not a sliding scale of 'vomit less, pay less' 😄.

This with bells on. ^

KarmaStar · 14/06/2023 23:06

Yanbu for a very tiny amount as you said then the fee was heavy.
Still,lesson learnt I guess.😃🍹🍹

Otarge · 14/06/2023 23:09

Sabrina145 · 12/06/2023 23:37

@NeverThatSerious Of course there should be a fee. But the 180 is to get the car cleaned here and loss of earnings. In this case he wiped the gear stick with tissue and the. Went to his boot and wiped it with sanitising spray and there was nothing else.

Yeah he did a patch up job on the hoof so that he could continue driving. After that he'd need a proper clean, which costs both for labour and time lost, so he's charged you for that.

BenandGerrys · 14/06/2023 23:20

I'm another poster who would like to know how old your friend is if she doesn't know what her alcohol limits are ??

Kitkatcatflap · 15/06/2023 01:10

50 quid for a work colleague in Fulham early 90s.

DocCee · 15/06/2023 02:16

Yuck! I’m assuming she is a teenager?
That poor driver - I’d have kicked the lot of you out and driven away 🤢🤢

ReachForTheMars · 14/06/2023 19:11

Exactly. It's not about what it costs to clean the taxi, it's a "you're going to think twice about ever doing this again, aren't you" fee.

He was rude and told me it was sick on his back seat which it wasnt, and took the money anyway!

The back seat, like mine was leather…

He accused me of it being sick and it wasn’t regardless, and still chose to take the fare knowing I was travel sick because I told him after a rough crossing.

I think he knew what he was doing 🤷‍♀️

Doggolover2

You’re right! What can I say? I’ve learned a valuable lesson tonight. Maybe need to row back from being nearly sixty.

How very un-Mumsnetty 😁

@MrsSkylerWhite ha! I honestly wasn’t trying to be an arse to anyone I just feel like the reaction was too much for the “crime” people saying ooh how can she be an amazing person, of course she can we are all human and make mistakes!x

ps whoever reported me for saying Karen boo you, I’m back hahaha!

Justthisonetimeagain · 19/06/2023 06:20

Did anyone else watch the QI where they had a scientist and a barfing (I think) replica person?
The particles spread out a lot further than you'd imagine 🤢
Yes taxi drivers have a right to charge for being off the road, losing fares, while clearing up the sick of drunk people 🙄 it is literally their livelihood ffs.
If you are a puker after drinking alcohol then
A) stop drinking
B) drink less
C) walk home
D) get someone to pick you up that doesn't charge a barf fee (although everyone should if the person is pissed)
Ultimately be very thankful the driver didn't leave you where you were when your friend started puking.
@Doggolover2 I didn't report you but I do find your use of 'Karen ' offensive. I am hoping with our rich and varied language there will be another word or phrase to keep us women in our place soon 🙏

thisthenthat · 19/06/2023 06:29

The replies on here are hilarious!!
'Loss of earnings/car out of service/driver PTSD' - none of that happened - he wiped it with a tissue and carried on with the night. End of story.

I too would be gutted to pay the full fee and I get where you're coming from, but ultimately it is bloody gross and a lesson learned for your friend. Which you already know.
