Can anyone help with what this is?

Daughter has been crying tonight saying her neck hurts. Just checked and she has two big water blisters there. They weren't there at bed time. What could have caused them to come up?

She always wears sun cream and hasn't got sunburnt. We did have fleas in the house recently (thanks Dcat!) but have had exterminators in since and haven't noticed any bites on her.

She's crying that they really hurt but unsure how to treat as not sure what the cause is. Have attached a pic for reference. The bottom one with the redness is the one that just popped when she took her tshirt off to show me. The top one is on her hair line

Do the grandparents have euphorbia in their garden? If she got plant sap on her coupled with sun today, that would cause this kind of reaction.

Naughty1205 · 12/06/2023 22:01

It looks like she skinned herself on something, is there a slide at playschool/home?

Thelnebriati · 12/06/2023 22:02

I'd wash the skin just in case its caused by plant sap, and phone 111. Thats a big blister.

awambamalooma · 12/06/2023 22:07

Almost certain it's not a burn, I don't use hair straighteners or anything like that so she wouldn't have access to them. She has lots of sun cream on as well but obviously there's always a risk of sunburn even with factor 50, non of the area around it looks red though. The redness on the bottom one is from the one that just popped so I think that's why it's red.

Sounds possible about the tree/plant sap that people are mentioning as she did play in the grandparents garden yesterday and there were times she went very close to the plants when her brother kicked the ball underneath them!

Looks just like burns I've had from Euphorbia and lilly of the Valley.

There are a fair few things in the garden that can cause this so maybe speak to the grandparents and see if she's been around any plants.

A lot of people dont realise, but Euphorbia sap can cause blindness if it gets in the eyes and its a skin irritant so it's worth finding out what plants they have.

Lilly of the valley gave me a particularly bad burn just like this and its extremely toxic to children.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 12/06/2023 22:31

We had a similar thing here. Turned out to be an allergy to one of those plastic price tag things which had accidently been left on the label inside the collar of a school shirt.

awambamalooma · 13/06/2023 06:24

Just to update I've found another two this morning. Luckily they are only little ones. The one that popped last night looks a bit weird this morning. Does anyone know if I should cover it with a dressing or just leave the air to get to it?

Let the air at it

take her to the doc if you’re worried

OkGoogleFoff · 13/06/2023 07:00

Are the new ones in the same area and on one side of her neck? Not sure if anyone has suggested this upthread but shingles? My DD had suspected shingles shortly after chickenpox at a similar age.

5128gap · 13/06/2023 07:28

I get this from nettle stings. Calamine lotion works well. Deals with the itch and dries them out. I'd put that on and keep an eye on the burst ones for signs of infection. Maybe get the pharmacist to take a look and recommend something.

scorpiogirly · 13/06/2023 07:32

Can you put sudocrem on it?

awambamalooma · 13/06/2023 07:34

I'll pop some calamine on as I've still got this in from when she had chicken pox. Hadn't thought about shingles but she seems fine in herself so hopefully it's not that

there is a plant called euphorbia which is common in gardens and grows big at this time of year. the sap can cause blisters. could she have been playing / hiding under plants in the garden and got sap on her?

I was going to suggest a reaction to a plant. I used to have a phlomis in the garden that gave me blisters like that when I pruned it. I had a whole ring of them round my arm, just above my gardening gloves

It also made me cough and sneeze like mad when it was in flower.

OrwellianTimes · 13/06/2023 07:48

I’d also suggest plant. I react like that to verbena botenarisis. Apparently common hogweed and celery leaves can also cause burns.

AngeliqueDePeyrac · 13/06/2023 07:55

Could be impetigo? My daughter's started out with a small blister which got much bigger then forms a yellow crust. Then other blisters appeared elsewhere. It's very contagious but easily treated with cream from the doctor.

Where were the other two op?

FangsForTheMemory · 13/06/2023 08:00

I would go for insect bite. I had a horsefly bit that blistered once.

GalaApples · 13/06/2023 08:16

Suspect euphorbia plants in gardens that is very irritating. For some people comfrey is too (in some gardens and on riverbanks etc. - flowering now). Also hogweed.

I was thinking possibly something like horsefly, spider bites can blister too

Fraaahnces · 13/06/2023 09:12

water pox?

canigetitmyself · 13/06/2023 10:19

Impetigo!!

You will need to see GP

Its common in kids. Spreads like wildfire

canigetitmyself · 13/06/2023 10:22

Had it myself and I'll bet a fiver that's it

TomatoSandwiches · 13/06/2023 11:09

I had Chicken pox 5 times under 10trs old once 3 times in a year, so it is definitely possible.
I hope she feels better soon whatever has caused it, poor mite.
