Holiday payment

SaphiraBlue · 12/06/2023 06:52

I’m interested to know how people would split the cost of a family holiday: It’s approx £3000 for a family of 4 (2 small children 5 & 6), a parent and their teenager (13) and another couple.

It’s a lodge. The family of 4 have 2 bedrooms. The couple have their own room with double bed, the parent will be sharing with their teen in a twin room.

Suggestions that have been made are:

  • family of 4 pay half, the couple and parent with teen pay a quarter each.
  • each party pay a third
  • Everyone pays a seventh per person except that the two little ones get classed as one seventh together. (So family of 4 pay 3/7)

There’s no issues or arguments or hard feelings. Everyone is happy to pay whatever they’re going to pay. If anything everyone is trying to be the “bigger person” and pay the suggestion that costs them more 🙄

I would just like to know what other people’s thoughts are.

TIA

Option 1 .. family 1 pay half then the other 2 famillies pay quarter each.

Flowerblooms · 12/06/2023 06:56

Think the first suggestion is the best, couple with 2 kids pay half and then you and other couple pay a quarter each.

Imisscoffee2021 · 12/06/2023 06:56

Family pays for two rooms, the couple for their one room and the parent and teen for theirs surely? So family pay half if the rooms are all the same or a similar price.

Option 1

Brendabigbaps · 12/06/2023 06:58

if nobody is bothered then I’d just split it 3 ways.
if it’s a bigger discussion then the fair way is by bedroom, so option 1

iwasthewalrus · 12/06/2023 07:04

If all the rooms are a fairly similar size etc I’d go option 1. If the kids are in a little bunk room or something then maybe option 3.

I think if you go with option 2 at some point during the week the parent and teen will probably resent it.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 12/06/2023 07:06

Option one.

Option 3

I’d have said a third each. It’s not just bedrooms being paid for -it’s also the use of the rest of the lodge which everyone will have access to.

Carrusa · 12/06/2023 08:07

Option 3. It's the most complicated but it splits the difference between the other 2.

Another option is to price up the cost of a 3 bed, split that 3 ways, and the family pays the difference between the cost of a 3 bed and a 4 bed. Not always possible but if it is, it seems the fairest to me.

Tinkerbyebye · 12/06/2023 08:09

Divide by 4 as that’s the number of rooms. The family pay half as they have two rooms, the others a quarter each

HAF1119 · 12/06/2023 08:10

Option 1

Option 1

I think the number of salaried adults is key to this. As well as the number of rooms and how nice the rooms are.
Dinky couple in master bedroom and single parent in bunk bed room shouldn't be paying the same.

I do like that you're all fighting to pay more though. That's how it should be with friends.

Quartz2208 · 12/06/2023 08:15

The problem with option 1 is that I suspect the 4th room is small and the difference between a 3 be and 4 bed isn’t 25%

for me 40/30/30 (the 7ths) reflects better the use of communal space, the gain from having 4 bedrooms and a better split

PuttingDownRoots · 12/06/2023 08:15

What's on the rest of the lodge? And where is it? Are the cost of other facilities including in that £3000 basically.

Mindymomo · 12/06/2023 08:16

I would divide by the 4 bedrooms, seems fairer, anything else like food can be split between adults with the parents of children paying a little more.

OccasionalHope · 12/06/2023 08:21

Yes, pay per bedroom for the lodge, then any other shared costs eg food pay per person with reduction for the small DC.

AmeIia · 12/06/2023 08:23

I disagree with option 1, most times where you book a holiday with children, the children are never the same price as the adults. So why would it be this way here? Its not just the fact that it's 2 bedrooms it's the entire use of the lodge etc. Option 3 seems the fairest, but even then I think the room with the teen shouldn't be fully 2 people, same as the 2 kids wouldn't be 2 full people.

Deliaskis · 12/06/2023 08:25

When we do this we have each adult worth a 'whole' and under 18s a half.

Carrusa · 12/06/2023 08:28

I wonder, OP, if you are the parent with the teen? You say you're all trying to be the "bigger person" and you haven't given us any options where the 13 year old is any cheaper than an adult.

Riverlee · 12/06/2023 08:32

Pay per bedroom.

BiddyPop · 12/06/2023 08:59

For lodge, family with 2 kids pay half and other 2 groups 1/4 each.

But when it comes to food etc, go to the 2 DCs counting as 1 person, so share food in sevenths. Family pays 3/7, and both the couple and the parent/teen groups pay 2/7 each.

That way both parts are fair. Unless all adults are likely to have alcohol on any meals out, so maybe teen counts as half and both DCs as 1/4 each, so split bills into 6ths. Family pays 2.5 sixths, couple pays 2 sixths, and parent/teen pays 1.5 sixths. (Or 5/12, 4/12 and 3/12 respectively might be easier to calculate).
