How do you know it likes burgers?

MrsR87 · 11/06/2023 17:59

What’s happened for you to know this information?

Guineapigwoes · 11/06/2023 17:59

So many odd threads on Mumsnet today

Butterflyfluff · 11/06/2023 18:02

WTF?

IDontWantToBeAPie · 11/06/2023 18:03

Horses are herbivores a burger will likely make them feel quite unwell. They don't have gall bladders or the liver function to detoxify from meat. A small amount may be ok but too much meat and fat isn't good for horses.

Don't feed them burgers.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 11/06/2023 18:03

Why are you feeding a horse burgers? It could kill it.

Thursa · 11/06/2023 18:04

Why are you feeding crap to someone else’s animals??

MushMonster · 11/06/2023 18:04

It does not matter if they eat burgers when you feed them.

  1. You never ever feed a horse that is not yours, you can cause them serious health issues.
  2. You never feed meat to rumiants, see what happened with the crazy cows case. Whoever can possibly have the idea of feeding meat to animals that cannot process it!
IBetGordonRamsayDoesntHaveTheseProblems · 11/06/2023 18:05

Stop feeding other people's animals.

mbosnz · 11/06/2023 18:08

My horse turned out to like fish and chips and hot dogs. I know this, because I left my lunch alone for seconds, and she bloody well snarfed the lot. I took care not to eat fish and chips and hot dogs in the paddock, in future! Please don't feed other people's horses. You could do them serious harm.

Whoa! Whoa! hold your horses! Where in my original post did I say that I had fed anyone’s horses?? I asked if I would be unreasonable to discuss it with the owner.

Well how about giving some actual context in your opening post then

Context is always helpful Hmm

knicknackkarriewhack · 11/06/2023 18:22

I have seen owner and her kids feeding them burgers, on a regular basis, think three or four times a week. I see them because I offered to fill water bath up from my hose. She has to get somebody to bring a water bowser to fill it, and sometimes the bath is empty. The bath is at the other side of my garden fence.

Yes you’d be unreasonable to discuss it, unless you’re reporting to the owner that some idiot third party is feeding the horse and you think the owner doesn’t know. There’s absolutely nothing to discuss. It’s not your horse - don’t feed it anything (including grass), don’t leave food where it can reach it, mind your own business about what the owner feeds it (tho burgers are beyond inappropriate), don’t touch it, don’t go in its field…. Leave it well alone.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/06/2023 18:23

How do you know?

They probably already know - I've met horses that will grab and eat all sorts of stuff, cheese butties, ham sandwiches, mars bars, biscuits.

They shouldn't, but they do, they certainly don't all drop dead of it, but colic is a real and serious risk of course.

If you think a horse is eating stuff and the owner doesn't know - for example you're seeing people in neighbouring gardens feeding over the fence, then yeah, let them know.

knicknackkarriewhack · 11/06/2023 18:37

Having owned horses for over twenty five years (not anymore) I find it hard to watch. Our horses were finely tuned athletes, as my daughter competed, British Dressage. I just dabbled at Elementary. The owner knows I’m an experienced horse owner and has asked if I will keep my eye on them. I must admit that when I’ve seen them eating burgers, I’m much more concerned that day and have been known to go check on them at 5am. I just don’t know what to do
