To Dread Summer Pasta Salads?

EggInANest · 11/06/2023 17:54

IMO pasta 'salad' is revolting.

Pasta was surely not made to be eaten cold? It is stodgy, claggy, and invariably mixed up with mayo and sweetcorn to make it even more claggy and gunky and horrid.

I keep seeing it recommended for buffets and BBQs. Alongside Coleslaw and Potato salad, both of which are also creamy beige, mayo drenched and one very carby. Fine if you like these salads (I do like good coleslaw and good potato salad) but not all three together, surely? We need contrast and variety!

Does summer have to come with a side of pasta salad?

There is someone on FB that does piss take recipes for Mid Western American "salads" and they are some of weirdest shite I have ever seen. Why any of them are called a salad is beyond me.

The thing is, how can you tell what is a piss take and what is a real ‘recipe’?

Casseroles are the same. Basically, any old ingredients with a can of condensed soup poured over. I just looked at something called ‘Tater Tots Casserole’. Mince, tin of mushroom soup poured over, tinned green beans added, top with some horrendous orange frozen croquette type things called Tater Tots, and bake.

But tuna mayo is MUCH better on brown toast, white crusty bread, even a tortilla chip, than on pasta. And pasta is nicer with about 4000 things than tuna mayo.

It' not the individual things, it's the combination.

You need to try pasta with cheese and salad cream that's amazing

I googled jello salad and saw this, so now you have to.

ContinuousProcrastination · 11/06/2023 20:12

You are doing it wrong.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/06/2023 20:13

YANBU cold pasta is absolutely hangin

CrushOnJonah · 11/06/2023 20:16

YABU pasta with tuna mayo and sweetcorn is the food of the Gods. I eat it all year round

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/06/2023 20:16

No @Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy salad cream is for boiled eggs (and chips at a push). Then I am transported back to my granny's house. That and gammon with pineapple, banana mashed on water biscuits, and crumpets with so much melted butter you could have used a straw.

Happy days.

Similar is Mexi-fries. Tater tots with taco toppings. Bloody lush I'm afraid.

I looked. 😱
The ingredients are lime jello (gelatin), crushed pineapple, evaporated milk, mayonnaise, cottage cheese, and walnuts.

If I was invited to an event where that was served I would be so grateful for the mayo-Ey pasta salad alternative.

I so agree! However it is made, with dressing, mayo, oil or whatever, cold pasta is just wrong!

I'll take a Greek salad over a rice or pasta salad anyday.

I think I'm just put off as my mil would insist she was the best cook ever, and every single time she would whip up her famous pasta and rice salad. Both exactly the same, except one was pasta and one was rice. And made with curried mayonnaise.

Put me off for life I tell ya.

She's an ex mil, so I thank every star above me for never having to face the curried abominations ever again.

And this tip isn't from my mil.... But add a bit of condensed milk to your potato salad.

Dear God. Tell me you meant evaporated milk, not the sweet stuff?

WhatADrabCarpet · 11/06/2023 20:56

Im probably in the minority here but I boak at the thought of cold, soggy, greasy roasted veg in a salad.

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/06/2023 20:58

YABU. I was deathly hungover yesterday and found a pot of plain cooked pasta in the fridge that DH had left there the night before. A splash of good olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and I ate it out of the tub with a fork. Perfect.

007DoubleOSeven · 11/06/2023 21:05

If you eat it with mayonnaise and sweetcorn of course it will be horrible.

Otherwise, yabu

AxolotlEars · 11/06/2023 21:08

Pasta, artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, basil, oil/vinegar dressing and maybe some sort of cheese is fantastic 😊

the80sweregreat · 11/06/2023 21:11

Just don't eat it if you makes you feel ill or not your bag.
I agree pasta is better hot.

midsomermurderess · 11/06/2023 21:13

‘Just don't eat it’. Strong.

tillyandmilly · 11/06/2023 21:17

Same hate salads! Euwwwwww! Slimey pasta yuk! Rather just have a baked potatoe with cheese !

Didiplanthis · 11/06/2023 21:19

Is cous cous pasta ? Someone said it was up thread... is this another thing I have just learnt ? Although I am happier to learn about this than ambrosia salad... 🤮

Papernotplastic · 11/06/2023 21:22

I’ve always felt that adding pineapple to cottage cheese is morally wrong. That lime green jello salad proves it.
