Lump in neck - 2 week referral

Butterfly2be · 10/06/2023 19:16

Have had a lump in my neck for a couple of years. I went to the GP when I first spotted it and was told not to worry, but I went back recently as it has got bigger.

GP thought it was a lipoma, but referred for ultrasound to make sure. Ultrasound came back inconclusive. I can’t remember much of the detail m, but something about septations was mentioned. Now I have been referred on the 2 week cancer pathway.

Obviously it might still be nothing to worry about, but I’m worried anyway! Just posting for traffic to see if anyone has any experience/words of wisdom while I wait for the appointment.

Try not to worry if you can. I had a lump last year and was on the 2 week referral as well. The ENT team at my local hospital were great and very kind. I had ultrasounds and a camera stuck up my nose and down my throat. The latter sounds awful but was done so quickly I barely had time to think about it. Like you the results were inconclusive, so much so I didn’t have to have a fine needle biopsy which I was dreading. I was told that many people have lumps in their throat with them becoming more likely the older you get. Remember to ask questions if you want to when you see the consultants and to write down what they tell you while it’s fresh in your mind.

Your appointment should be organised very quickly, mine was within 48 hours so hopefully will be the same for you.

I've been in a similar situation recently (May) Rest assured when you are seen if they suspect something they will remove it ASAP.

Mine was removed within 45 minutes and biopsy returned a squamous cell carcinoma, so best possible cancerous outcome. No further treatment required.

Pragmatically you can only deal with it when you know what it is, and it may be nothing sinister. I know it's hard to think that way, but deep breath. You've got this.

Hello,

I had a lump that I was told was a lipoma, until it was scanned. 4 scans later they were still unsure what it was and I was sent down the 2 week path. I was terrified.

Turned out to be a AVM. Bit peculiar, but not as scary as what I thought.
Good luck

Sending you loads of good wishes OP 🌷I had an enlarged lymph node in my neck as a teenager that still goes up and down again 30 years later.

Over 90% of 2WW referrals aren’t cancer

I had a lump (front of neck) and was put on 2 week pathway. Turned out to be my thyroid and I have Hashimoto's Disease - this sounds horrendous but it's not. I'm on thyroxine for life but it's under control and I'm fit and well.
