AIBU census on house cladding

NC as outing.

We’re about to clad the outside of our house. To keep it short, we’d prefer not to clad but really have no choice in the matter (we’re replacing it).

DH seems to think that once the wood cladding goes on it ALL needs to be sanded back before being primed.

AIBU in thinking that sanding is not required? Has anyone ever known someone to sand an external wood structure?

Bear in mind that the wood has a smooth finish.

YABU - of course he needs to fine sand 500+ meters

YANBU - he doesn’t need to sand the external house cladding which is going to be primed anyway and have two coats of industrial paint

When I paint wood, if it's "smooth" I sand it after priming as the primer seems to lift the grain a little.

That said, I'm not sure I fancy sending that much cladding! I don't think the finish needs to be quite as smooth as a smaller wooden piece.

Is it wood like on the scandinavian houses?

hell no to that, my dad spends every few years half the summer sanding, painting etc the whole of outside my parents detached house.

modern option is composite, look of wood with none of the mainteinance, have you considered that?

Do composite. Where I live in Canada wood cladding is the norm but in the last decade when it needs maintenance people have replaced with composite. The only maintenance it then needs it power washing. For some reason mine is painted metal (don’t recommend. Very low maintenance but we had to install central a/c 4 days after moving in because it’s an oven and I don’t want to camp in the basement from June to September).
