Problem family making a noise in the garden....

Bloody magpies who live in a tree in our garden. They must have a domestic about three or four times a week, bastard things 🤣. I love them, but still....

And the constant noise from the little birds nesting in other trees as well.....

Then there are the seagulls that swoop down just to laugh at my dog and set him off barking....

AIBU to think that birds are terrible neighbours? 🤣🤣

Is it magpies that kind of yack to one another?

It's more of a chatter. And fledglings make a noise like someone standing on an elderly squeaky toy.

We have rooks in big trees behind our house. They are thugs, and come down to our garden at 4am, a-whooping and a-hollering, to knock the bird feeders off their hooks and feast on the contents. They also land on the edge of the roof just above our bedroom window and perform a corvid adaptation of Stomp. Interestingly, later in the morning when I come down and look at them severely through the window, they seem to have taken the hobnail boots off.

We have seagulls out the back that get into fights with a local heron. There have been times when the shrieking is so loud that it’s got me out of bed to see what the hell was going on. Seagulls swooping on the heron trying to get it to go away; the heron simply ducking and then screaming at them to fuck off (I assume).

I absolutely do. I have been known to panic and go around looking for a second one if I'm expecting news....my husband thinks I'm strange for some reason.....

I don't mind birds or the dawn chorus - I live in the middle of a forest, so there are a LOT of birds. What gets me are the bloody tawny owls screeching all night long. And I mean screech - all bloody night lol.

One of the magpies came down earlier this afternoon and stood on the living room window sill screeching at the dog. God knows what the dog had done to upset it. He's an elderly lab so could barely be bothered to raise his head and tell the fucker to fuck off.

How nice to live in the middle of a forest.

Dunno what bird it is but along with the crows, magpies, parakeets it sounds distinctly like a car alarm that's laughing after 4 glasses of wine... you have to hear it to know.. its kinda cute but loud....

Want2beme · 11/06/2023 12:32

Swallows are in town, dive bombing my very outraged cats. Murderous crows wait for snacks every morning, hollering to their mates to join. Poor little ones don't stand a chance.

We have 3 feeders of sunflower hearts and they are finished every day. Mostly finches (gold/bull/green/chaff) and tits but the hen blackbird and robins have also mastered it. Pigeons and collar doves keep trying. This year the bloody magpies have moved in. I hate the nest-robbing bastards so we try to scare them off.

On the front lawn we have the duck gang-bang as we live opposite a stream. In the back we have Phil the Pheasant and his harem of females. They have created a dust bath in my dahlia bed for some random reason. Best of all we have house martins nesting under the eaves. Last year I didn't notice them at all, so I'm delighted they are back.

We used to say 'Hello, Mr Magpie', until a colleague told me you have to add '... how's your wife today?' and another one said it's 'Hello Mr Magpie, how are your wife and children today?'. Someone else said they just salute them. Would we say 'your DFs' (Dear Fledglings)?

CheeseandTrees · 11/06/2023 13:28

The local starlings are absolute yobs. Constantly fighting over my bird feeder until it's empty then descending on the neighbours' feeders. The rest of the birds are lovely though. My personal favourite is our Robbin who sings his heart out. I just wish he'd find a lady friend.

It is 😊

YANBU OP. I love little tweety song bird types but any crow types have such a horrible and loud caw that grates more than a little!
They also wake me up really early whereas little tweeters don’t.
Also, after watching Springwatch, I’m not such a fan of jays…

ohsuzannah · 11/06/2023 15:00

Two houses over from us, the neighbours have about 10 huge conifers. They are full of magpies, wood pigeons and doves. I'm used to the noise now ( especially the magpies), but the other day they started cutting the trees down. I'm devastated for the birds because I'm sure there are nests in there!
We have two large trees in our garden which I expect to be full of magpies soon. The rest of the trees are going next week 😢
