Severe pain, large cyst worried

Hi,

I've been getting niggling pains on the right lower abdomen side near ovaries, bladder. Wednesday I woke up and couldn't move, screaming in pain thought I was going to pass out. I thought it was kidney stones so went to the hospital. I had bloods which were normal, Ct scan shown no stones but a large soft tissue/cystic lesion superior to bladder & uterus 12.4 x 10.7 x 8.0 cm. I needed a urgent ultrasound but they couldn't do it then and I need to go back next week. Still getting pains on & off but constantly have a heavy, swollen stomach feeling. Dull like period pains. When the pains do get bad they are at the bottom of my back, right side of lower abdomen and down my right leg to about my knee. I can only describe as contraction pains, stinging pains, the worse period pain I've ever had. It knocks me off my feet, I can't speak or talk when this pain takes over and just have to sit up right rocking side to side until it eases and then sit in bed.

Has anyone had anything similar? I've googled endometriosis and the pain seems similar. I can't stop thinking it could be cancerous but I asked the doctor in hospital and she said it looks like it's fluid filled and while they can't 100% say it's not cancerous she's pretty sure it's just a very large cyst.

Sorry for the long post, I'm driving myself mind. And I don't know if I posted in the right place.

That's a large cyst! And you are at risk of a torsion. When you get the pain badly you need to present at ED and ask for a referral to gynae, they will have a reg or consultant on that will be able to scan over the weekend. I would imagine you need theatre if it's that painful. Good luck

They said on Wednesday without the ultrasound they don't know where to send me. I do think it will need to be removed too. The doctor mentioned torsion and I had all the symptoms of that but she didn't say it could be that. Just at a lost really until the scan next week.

A true torsion is a surgical emergency as you may lose your ovary if not removed. Any large hospital should have a gynae dept with 24hr emergency cover. Ours is staffed with doctors that can scan in these sorts of cases. If the pain is that bad go to your biggest local hospital and ask to be referred.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2023 14:34

I am waiting for surgery for an 8cm cyst,it's down as urgent as considered big so yours is definitely too big! I was told to go to A and E if I had symptoms that you describe.

A lady was sat in ambulatory ward with me. She came in before me and I was there for 8 1/2 hours. They had been ringing gynae department the whole time and no one came for her. This was a Wednesday as well. She was still waiting when I left. The doctor said sent me home because she said there's no where for me to go, no beds so I would of just been sat there until I got a scan which the next emergency one is Wednesday. I'm taking co codemol and tramadol for the pain.

I went to a&e Wednesday. They said they couldn't do anything more until I had a ultrasound. Can't get a emergency one until Wednesday but did say to go back if the pain got worse again. Up to now the pain has been bad but not like Wednesday, I've learnt the best ways to cope with it. Hopefully can last until Wednesday.

I feel for you, I had an enormous cyst too, 16 years ago now, found when I had an U/S of pregnancy and they found my uterus was bicornuate... except it was a cyst causing the shape. I lost that baby unfortunately and had cyst surgery at the same time as D&C.
I can't help with the pain as mine was no pain at all, the did say mine was fluid filled too, send a bit off for tests but wasn't ever a concern for consultant as they said it looked like a fluid filled cyst so hope that helps your worries a bit. Mine effectively was some mucus producing cells that were creating the fluid - probably been there many years getting bigger and bigger
Good luck with yours

FiloPasty · 10/06/2023 14:59

Is there a different a & E you can go to? That’s awful

Sorry about your loss. That must of been awful for you. I didn't know how much problems cysts could cause.

No that's my only round here. There are 2 walk in centres in different towns but they won't help. I think I've got a grip on the pain atm if it goes how it was on Wednesday then I will definitely go back to a&e I'm more worried about it being sinister. I just want it removed now. It doesn't feel like my body anymore. I don't know if that makes sense.

i had 8x7x5/6cm cyst on one of the i aries for 9 years, had 4 pregnancies with it too. It caused regular pains but there was a risk when removing it to ovaries, etc so we decided to leave it alone during the child bearing years.

I tried a lot of things to get rid of it,having pcos the usual- low carb diet exercise no processed food, filtered water no plastics .

now i dont know if it was coincidence but having read about dairy causing ovarian cysts i was like after cleaning my diet up so much i was reluctant to leave dairy out but since it was literally the last thing to try i did that and also oil packs on ovaries- after i started this about a month later i had a first routine scan, the cyst had reduced by 3cm..continuing to do what i was doing then 6 months later i had another scan and it was gone.

fluid filled cysts are simple cysts dont stress it, they will likely do a bloodtest something 25 to check it isnt cancerous but fluid filled cysts are very very very rarely something serious in that way, many women have them without knowing they have them, under 5cm they dont cause symptoms. risk with larger ones are rupture and internal bleeding.

Ca125 bloodtest and castor oil packs*

They said they were going to do another blood test before I left on Wednesday and I assumed it was the CA125 test but they didn't do, they could of done it with the first lot of tests I had done I suppose. What are the castor oil packs? Iam nervous about having it removed because of fertility but if it gets rid of this pain and stops any future problems I can live with that.

I had one of these a couple of years ago. It was about 12x10 and contained 1.25 litres of fluid. I felt a lot better after that was removed.

Oh really!? I cannot wait for it to be removed. I can imagine the relief of having it gone. I've been trying to lose weight for ages and the bottom of my belly just sticks out and I used to always joke that I bet I have some sort of growth and now I have this. Once it's removed I'm completely changing my lifestyle.

I used to feel ok in the morning but from mid afternoon onwards, my clothes would feel tighter and I was getting more and more bloated. The relief when I could get home from work and put my pjs on was amazing.

My consultant was quite impressed by the size of it apparently. When I got home, my charming DH put the same amount of fluid in a ziplock so we could visualise it. Extraordinary really.

Hello, I had a 10cm cyst removed just 3 weeks ago. After my ultrasound I was referred to oncology because it looked a little suspicious, but even after that it was benign. According to my gynecologist they nearly always are.

Sorry to hear about the pain you're experiencing! For me my main symptom was bladder issues. All cleared up since my surgery! I'm guessing yours will probably need removing too as it's even bigger than mine. I had to have open surgery because my cyst was solid, maybe because yours is fluid you might only need keyhole. Good luck!

Did you get pains? From googling it seems my pain is the same as endometriosis pain. That's actually really interesting re the fluid in the bag I might do the same. I want to ask them to take a picture of mine but I don't think this is allowed 🙈 it must of been a scary time waiting for the results of yours.

Recovery has been okay! Yes I stayed in 2 nights as it was open surgery so more major. I wasn't in that much pain after surgery surprisingly, I was expecting far worse. They gave me a morphine pump but I only used it straight after surgery then didn't need it again. They would have kept me another night but because I was in minimal pain and able to walk around they let me go. I had almost no pain after a week. I'm doing well now, mostly just tiredness/fatigue but it's improving.

Yes I did get some pains with my cyst, but it wasn't severe. Sometimes it would hurt to lean over, or I'd just get aches in the area. At one point I had hip pain.
My main issue was needing to wee constantly! I think it depends where your cyst is/what it's pressing on.
I was going to ask my surgeon to take a photo but I was so nervous beforehand that I forgot, however she told me afterwards my cyst was a dermoid and had hair and teeth inside it! Absolutely gross 🤮 glad it's gone!

I had a cystic ovary removed donkey's years ago. It was "about the size of a lemon" but I can't remember the dimensions. Keyhole surgery. Stayed in two nights for obs, back at work two days after that.

The other ovary takes over, it's amazing. They said I might miss a period but it arrived bang on time - something the lumpy ovary had rarely managed!

Really sorry you're in so much pain. I've glad you've got heavy meds, but FGS don't make any sudden movements and try not to twist or bend!

I've literally been bed bound since Wednesday after getting home from the hospital. When I do get up it I'm just moving round very slowly and nothing strenuous. I have a 12 year old and she's been absolutely brilliant helping me.

Hope my recovery goes as smooth as yours.

@Daisythecat15 I was getting the same pains as you for the past couple of months but just put it down to ovulation pain because it always seemed worse when I was due on or I thought it was water infections. Now it's just full on pain. The doctor mentioned pressure pain so maybe that or it's twisting.
