Car insurance help

Does anyone know if I was to drive my daughters uninsured car ( we’re picking it up from the garage) I’ll be covered under my fully comprehensive policy?
My policy is online only so can’t call Aviva to ask. I’ve googled and I think I can but got a niggling doubt that I’m not covered. Thanks.

Depends on your policy I think, don’t you have an emailed copy of the paperwork, or you can log in to your account and check.

Darkstar4855 · 10/06/2023 10:04

It depends on the specific policy. Being insured to drive other cars is not standard these days like it used to be. Do you have policy documents you can check? If you’ve got the e-mail from whenever you last renewed your insurance they should be attached.

Cosyblankets · 10/06/2023 10:06

It's my understanding that the car has to be insured

BennyBlancofromtheBronx · 10/06/2023 10:08

As PP have said, it depends on your policy. Also, most driving other cars cover is third party only.
Can you get a short-term/day policy that would cover you fully comp?

Toooldtoworry · 10/06/2023 10:10

I always thought the car had to be insured. I'd be tempted to get a days temporary insurance.

lionsleepstonight · 10/06/2023 10:12

If her car was insured, you'd be covered for 3rd party cover. But the car is uninsured so can't be driven. Is it taxed?

nebulae · 10/06/2023 10:15

The driving other cars cover (if you have it, as someone else said its not automatic on all policies nowadays) only applies if the car is insured elsewhere.

StrongTea · 10/06/2023 10:16

Would they deliver it to you if local?

rainbowunicorn · 10/06/2023 10:16

Just go online and read your policy documents. It will be in there somewhere

AHelpfulHand · 10/06/2023 10:19

The car has to have its down insurance policy

CatsOnTheChair · 10/06/2023 10:21

All your documents are available on the aviva account.
BUT, the other car needs to be insured, PLUS your insurance needs to cover you 3rd party on other vehicles - which is getting rarer.
Can you not get the car insured, with you as a named driver, before it gets collected? Surely it is going to need to be insured soon anyway?

Theraffarian · 10/06/2023 10:29

Do you need to tax it , if so you need insurance on the car in place anyway . Some garages arrange drive home insurance , I wouldn’t risk my third party cover on another car in case I had an accident on the way home that was my fault . Is there any reason why your daughter isn’t insuring from day one and adding you as a named driver , might make her policy cheaper anyway ?

PinkElephantsandLemonadee · 10/06/2023 11:41

Yes the car is taxed, and MOT’d she’s insured on my car (with her own policy) but wants to keep driving my car until her A-levels are finished then she will move her insurance over to the new car. She gets very anxious about driving new cars.

You can take a temporary policy out online. They can be as little as an hour.

PinkElephantsandLemonadee · 10/06/2023 11:45

This is what the Aviva chat bot says;
Aviva Chatbot:The policyholder is covered to drive any other car, third party only, as long as you:

  • Have a comprehensive policy with us
  • Are the policyholder and main driver on the policy with us
  • Are driving in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, The Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man
  • Don't own the car and don't have it on hire purchase
  • Have the owner's express consent to drive it
  • Still have your car and it isn't damaged beyond cost effective repair
  • Were 25 or over when you bought or renewed your policy.
  • Are not driving an automated vehicle.
  • Are driving a car under 20 years old, worth £70,000 or less and doesn't have significant modifications unless they were fitted from new and declared in the car's value or were not made because of a disability

How does she have a policy on your car? Do you have one too?

Why has she bought a car she's not going to drive?

If the car is not insured then you can't drive it under your policy even if it does cover 3rd party

Cosyblankets · 10/06/2023 11:48

Did you tell the chat bot that the car wasn't insured though

PinkFootstool · 10/06/2023 11:49

Almost certainly not, it's a specific exclusion in most policies in order to stop you being able to collect a seized vehicle which has no insurance policy in place.

I'm also with Aviva and it's an exclusion on mine.

MMorales · 10/06/2023 11:50

No you cant. It's illegal.

But you can get temporary insurance, even for a day or a few hours until you can sort out the proper insurance.

Discodiscodisco · 10/06/2023 11:52

Okay, so you have two problems:

If her car is taxed and not SORN, then she needs to have an insurance policy in place for it under the continuous insurance enforcement rules. If she doesn’t then she could be fined £100. N.B. This is even if she doesn’t use the car and it is parked on private land, they merely send an automated fine. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles My advice would be to immediately either insure or SORN the car.

Your insurance policy will almost certainly state that to drive another car on your policy, the other car has to have its own policy in place. As ever, check your policy wording.

Vehicle insurance

Rules on what motor insurance you need, what to do if you're in an accident, insurance for driving abroad, penalties for uninsured vehicles and drivers.

Doggymummar · 10/06/2023 11:53

Can you tow it home, then SORN it?

It has two policies on it, one in my name and one in her name ( I couldn’t add her to mine as she’s not over 21) . It’s just for two weeks then exams are over with and she’ll be driving it. We all do things to make our kids life easier

Doggymummar · 10/06/2023 11:54

Actually it probably needs ins to be towed ignore me, too 🥵

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 10/06/2023 11:54

You can’t if the car is uninsured. The car needs to be insured
