Long story short they have been very unreasonable in the past so we don't get on and I don't know whether this clouds my judgement over the problem or not. I would like to state right now that I am not racist in anyway nor do I want to be offensive to anyone when saying what the issue is.
Basically they cook curry 4 -:5 times a day from first thing in the morning until late at night. Every. Single. Day.
It is currently 10.10pm and I am ready to go to sleep after a long working week. Windows are open as it's warm. For the 4th time today my room (and most others) smell strongly of curry. I like curry but I am sick to death of the smell of it in my house and in particular my bedroom when going to sleep. Aibu? It is starting to stress me out and I can't get why they need to cook so bloody much. There is 4 adults in the house with 2 kids. Meal times yes I get but now?

Tbh it would drive me mad too if it were that frequent, but I’m not sure what can be done really.

JustGeorgie · 09/06/2023 22:26

I have curry cooking neighbours too

Pisses me off because it smells DIVINE!!

Mine never tastes as good as theirs smells

Do they have a teen? My 19 year old cooks Dahl for breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime snack. However it tends to be one cooking session and all day eating. I've gone nose blind.

Boil liver and onions. All day every day! Fight fire with fire.

Daffodil92 · 09/06/2023 22:31

YABU, you can’t dictate what they cook in their own home, sorry.

Whenwillitallmakesense · 09/06/2023 22:31

Maybe they have a business selling curries. Maybe the donate meals to soup kitchens, maybe they feed extended members of their family and friends who can't do it for themselves. Maybe they just really like curry.
I'm not exactly sure what you can do about it. What would you like to do about it? Are you friendly with them? Is it possible to at least have a conversation with them?

I love it but one of our neighbours fries off the onions in some spice first and we get that through our whole flat, I can't cope with food smells, even food I like can cause me to gag if I'm in the wrong headspace or whatever (I'm a sensitive wee snowflake obviously, stupid overenthusiastic sense of smell). Nothing you can do, they may run a small food business from home (another neighbour does this here) making home cooked food for folks. If its too warm not to have the windows open, get a cheap little air con unit and close the windows.

LolaSmiles · 09/06/2023 22:40

There's probably not much you can do without being unreasonable, but I sympathise with you because in my opinion any strong smelling food or strong scents really shouldn't be so strong and continuous to be affecting other houses.

Itsacebeingme · 10/06/2023 08:45

No teens no, just young children. They have been screaming in the garden for the last 10 minutes but that's another thread!
No one ever comes to the house and they rarely go out so don't think it's a business.
We don't really get on as they reported us to the council when we were having problems with our teen who has since been assessed for adhd/autism. They complained about her slamming doors and going up and down the stairs. This was never after 10pm so typical teenage strops. I don't think there's anything I can do it just seems so selfish.

YABU. What would be acceptable to you? If it was toad in the hole? Spaghetti bolognese? If it was curry but only twice a day? Given their previous noise complaint about you it’s clearly quite close quarters where you are but that’s just one of those things when you have neighbours I think.

Right!

Try a diffuser with a strong smelling natural oil.
