To be confused by Ryan Air baggage

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2023 22:15

We are flying Ryanair tomorrow (we have to)

we’ve got family plus tickets which gives us one 20kg checked bag for one person and then all of us have a 10kg check in bag

Do all of these bags go in the hold? Are there size restrictions or just weight? Basically we’ve got in medium suitcase weighing 18 kg and two small suitcase weighting about 8kg each plus I have a handbag and DH has a small rucksack. Will that be ok?

really confused by the difference between a check bag and a check in bag and the Ryan air website is not clear

Could anyone advise? Thank you

It is all made clear on the website. Just ask to check in all suitcases when you check in your hold luggage to save you the hassle of dragging them around the airport. Despite all the negative media around ryanair they are fine as long as you stick to the conditions. For reference, in the future, it is usually cheaper to add luggage individually to a basic fare at booking rather than take the bundle options. So if you only need 2 medium suitcases just pay for those. Sometimes it is cheaper to pay for a check in bag rather than a carry-on case. If carry-on is cheaper and you are going for a while, use click and collect at boots airside for sunscreen etc as this is usually cheaper in the UK than many parts of Europer.

@willstarttomorrow thank you. I can’t make head nor tail of it on the website but I must be being dim. Thanks for the tip on future bookings - noted - I’ll do that next time

So your large back is checked on in the hold
you then have a 10K bag each for the hold
You also have 10Kg onboard bags each

You seem to have paid for a lot of luggage your aren’t using

Next time it would be cheaper for priority boarding at 10K small suitcase above you seat and 10K under the seat

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2023 22:37

Thank you @Itsanotherhreatday that makes sense

the tickets were a birthday present (very lucky) so I probably wouldn’t have gone for that much luggage allowance and saved some money if I’d been paying

Hi - sounds like you are family plus (same we fly when we fly Ryan air) you get 1 10kg bag per person but in the hold + 1 20kg bag. Everything carry on needs to be in their small handbag under the seat size. Basically the 10kg is the size you can normally carry on as a cabin bag but by opting for this fare option you don't get the charge for that or the ridiculous competition for the overhead locker.

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2023 22:48

Thank you @Hosum - it is a family plus package

Quick question does it matter what size the 10kg is as it’s going on the hold?

I get confused too.
The 18kg bag will definitely go in hold.
The 8 kg bags will probably stay with you on plane.
Get the dimensions within limits. They are strict on size as well as weight.

PriamFarrl · 09/06/2023 22:51

If you go onto the app 24 hours before you are due to fly then you have the Travel Assistant available. That will make it really clear.

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2023 22:53

Thank you I’ll check that now

That really was clear @PriamFarrl Thank you!

How strict are they on the small bag dimensions? DHs rucksack is maybe 42 cm when it should be 40cm

The smaller bags may not meet the size restrictions even if less than 10kg. They can be strict on size especially of flight is busy. Will the rucksack squash?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/06/2023 23:11

We've just done 4 back to back Ryanair flights.

Everyone gets a handbag to carry onto the plane. Dimensions on the website.

The 10kg cabin bags are also carried onto the plane, in addition to the handbags, and go up in the locker. Dimensions on the website.

The 20kg bag goes in at the check in desk to the hold. Dimensions on the website.

We took hand luggage only (Inc 10kg bags) and no one counted or weighed any of them or checked their size. However we pre checked Dimensions ourselves before we flew. Decathlon sell handbag sized bags the exact cms of the ryanair allowance.

I fly with them monthly or thereabouts and not once has my carry on bag been checked for either size or weight.

I took a suitcase sized bag instead of a personal sized one on once and nobody batted an eyelid.

Probably varies by airport though!

Particularly though with a rucksack they won’t care, it can be squashed down to fit under the seat 🤷‍♀️

Quick question does it matter what size the 10kg is as it’s going on the hold?

3.2 Priority & 2 Cabin Bags and 10kg Check-in Bag
Passengers who have booked Priority & 2 Cabin Bags (including those with a Regular or Flexi Plus ticket, and those who purchased a Plus ticket prior to 11 December 2019) can take a small carry-on bag (up to 40cm x 20cm x 25cm) and a large item of carry-on baggage (weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm) on the plane with them, unless we have good reason to place the large item of baggage in the hold. In this case, take any valuables out of the baggage.

Hosum · 09/06/2023 23:16

No! A lot of this is nonsense. If you've paid to take the 10kg on board then you'll need to meet the size requirements. If you are checking it which you have to do on the family plus - size doesn't matter (unless outsize) just the weight.

Not everyone can take the 10kg on board on Ryanair - depends if you have paid. We don't bother small bags enough for us and as we need the 20kg we are waiting at baggage claim anyway.

We found on the last few flights they weren't tat fussed about the size of the hand luggage carry on as long as you weren't taking the piss to try to get a cabin bag without paying. We had 4 normal sized backpacks - not stufffed full but with books/tablets etc.

catgirl1976 · 09/06/2023 23:20

Perfect

his rucksack won’t be stuffed to the gills and I’m sure it will fit under a seat

I think we will be fine. If not he can juggle his stuff I’m not paying 7” euro each way so he can have his magney bag with him 🤣. It’s only slightly bigger than the measurements and it won’t be full so think it will be fine and I’m sure we’ve taken it on Ryanair before. We’ve not travelled since covid and I feel so out of the loop!

We flew RyanAir last week. No one even gave our bags a second glance.

catgirl1976 · 10/06/2023 15:03

Can confirm they were not even slightly interested in the size of our hand luggage. All was fine. Thanks everyone who
