If you’re autistic, what job do you have and how do you cope?

I’m in my late 20s and reached burn out, and now realise that I’m most likely autistic. I powered through up until now and now feel exhausted and need a change. Im due to start a new job soon in the same field and keep crying thinking about it as I don’t feel strong enough. If you’re autistic, what job do you do and how do you cope with it?

Thank you all, I forgot I had posted this thread back in June. I ended up not starting that job in the end, and I'm now a month into a degree in SALT after deciding to retrain. The idea of working with young children with communication difficulties seems immensely rewarding to me and I'm really excited about it

My older sister is autistic and works for the police on their computer systems. It's all computer-based (which is one of her interests) and not very "people-y".

She's been doing it since graduating uni, so the better part of 20 years. Even when she moved further away, she continued to commute, rather than switch jobs.

Amazing, good luck with your degree OP. SALT looks so interesting but hard to get into!

I work in environmental science. It’s taken a while (and some jobs that I really hated) to get my perfect job set up /work out what suits me but seem to have got there in the end. I now work in quite a niche area but it really interests me and suits my (over?!) attention to detail! So now work part time 3.5 days, and since pandemic have pretty much worked from home. Realised after returning to the office how ineffective I was in an open plan office. I cannot zone out other people’s conversations or background noise and find it really stressful trying to focus! Although I do enjoy working with others I like to be able to escape too when it all gets a bit much. I’m terrible with remembering faces and names, even with colleagues I’ve known for ages, so having names there on a teams call is so much easier for me. I think the trick is to find something you’re really interested in and don’t be afraid of letting people know what you need to be most effective at work…Good luck with your degree!

That's a great update OP. Good luck with the degree. Sounds really promising!
