Yes - might take a day or two, but your blood sugar levels will even out more.

I cut carbs last year and have never felt more ‘alive’. I’ve also lost 2 and a half stone so win win.

It depends on how much you eat to start with. How many calories and sugar you have. I've cut sugar out and do intermittent fasting, that's really boosted my energy. My carbs are moderate anyway.

QueefQueen80s · 09/06/2023 09:58

Carbs and sugar give me a false energy, a quick boost but mostly a sugar high and then very sluggish, not to mention the bloating/water retention and weight they bring.
After a few days cutting out the big carbs and feeling energyless, like a pp said I feel alive! Like how our bodies are meant to be.

Stupid question, but what are you cutting out, is it just bread/rice/pasta ? And what are you replacing it with ?

More protein, fruit and veg.

I feel so much better when I don’t have carbs.

I'm 7 days carb and sugar free and after a few days of being very sluggish I feel great!

Cutting out starchy carbs altogether gave me less energy, a slow metabolism and not enough fibre in my diet, even though I was really careful with nutrition generally when I did so. Also it made me absolutely crazy and want to binge on the worst kind of processed carbs and also alcohol as it caused a horrible imbalance and really low blood sugar, and I'm never a binge eater or drinker normally. Also I just felt like I was eating too much protein - my gut does not cope well with a high protein diet and most people would do well to eat less, not more protein- I think very high protein is absolute bollocks, and actually does damage to your body. I lift weights and get enough protein just from my normal diet including meat, fish, cheese, milk and tofu without any nonsense supplements.

I'd just swap the more refined ones for whole versions where possible and portion carefully and see how you go. I do a lot of exercise and absolutely nothing beats starchy carbs for energy for me, plus they are so comforting, filling and convenient.

Like the pp, when I lost weight a while ago, I didn't cut carbs completely but stuck to whole versions so wholemeal bread, brown rice and pasta etc. And I cut back on the amounts. So a small slice of bread or a small jacket potato with plenty of veg and lean protein. And I'd often just have protein and veg for my evening meal (but a good quantity so I still felt full).

Not going to lie, it was very tough for the first week or two as I really craved sugar. But then I had loads more energy and felt much better.

Potatoes with their skins are so good, big jackets, wedges and Jersey royals, and so satisfying. Am so glad I'm reintroduced them to my diet- in moderation.

I had too much bread yesterday - a bagel, one slice of dark rye sourdough and a couple of slices of seeded bread. That made me bloated and windy. But if I stick to my normal quota of a couple of slices of bread a day or equivalent then that goes down very well, no bloating at all.
