To be upset with work..

I posted a couple of weeks ago how I work in a cafe and they had asked several members of staff other than me to become a "team leader" after our manager left. It isn't extra paid, and is more responsibility so the general response was I had dodged a bullet.

I was getting over that, to log onto the app that now has rota's on to find they have taken an hour a day off me. No one else - just me. My sons school is a 5 min walk so I drop him off then go to work, but as they have me starting an hour later now, I'm going to have to sit in the staff room unpaid as it's not worth going home. No heads up about this, no explanation, just put down and £80 a month gone for me. They've only done the same to 1 other member off staff who is currently on sick anyway and isn't back for a few weeks.

I work Fridays and Sundays and have been asking for ages for just 1 Sunday a month off to spend with my young children.. instead they haven't done that and just taken what equates to a days pay off me by cutting an hour off a day.

I feel like they're trying to push me out.

I'm considering just handing my notice in or not going back.

Did you ask why they've done this? I can't think a cafe would want to get rid of loyal staff as it's so hard to recruit these days! Maybe there's a bit of negotiation you can do?

Niceseasidetown · 07/06/2023 14:36

It's rotten and I understand why you feel that way.

It does sound worth looking for other jobs but also raising this with whoever makes decisions in case they're unaware of your feelings

CharlieRight · 07/06/2023 14:42

So they have reduced each of your two shifts by one hour. Without talking to you about it first? That’s quite shitty, what does your contract say? zero hours?

billy1966 · 07/06/2023 14:44

Show them the exact same courtesy and suit yourself completely.

Wenfy · 07/06/2023 14:44

Experienced Cafe staff are in high demand. Are there are companies you could work for instead?

PineappleLatte · 07/06/2023 14:47

How many hours are you contracted to?

EyUpThereLass · 07/06/2023 14:59

I haven't asked they just said "that is your hours for the foreseeable" after I questioned it. Zero hours contract.. been there 18 months and we keep asking for contacts but never seen one.

Yep just taken 2 hours a week off me without so much as a heads up. And won't let me have a Sunday off that I've been asking for. X

If I was you I’d be looking for another job. Make sure you are clear about your expectations during the interview: make sure that they know you are willing to be flexible but that you expect the same level of give and take.

by the way how was the interview with the current lot? If you don’t get courtesy and respect in an interview you know it’s all down hill.

EyUpThereLass · 07/06/2023 18:04

My interview was done by another much more understanding manager who is the one who's recently left.

Does anyone have any knowledge on zero hour contracts?

Can I refuse shifts (the Sundays?) is there a notice period with them?

OP posts:
mogsrus · 07/06/2023 18:13

If nothing is in writing ( contract ) then technically you can say you want a Sunday off now & then, but they will make it nasty

VariationsonaTheme · 07/06/2023 18:25

If you’re on a zero hours contract then it applies both ways. If you don’t want the Sunday shift then you tell them that. Of course they might mess around with your hours even more. I’d look for another job.

TheSnowyOwl · 07/06/2023 18:26

I would find a job elsewhere.

CaroleSinger · 07/06/2023 18:30

If it's zero hours you don't technically have to accept the notice shifts either and can take them as accrued holiday.

Cakeorchocolate · 07/06/2023 18:32

Zero hours yes you can just refuse the sunday (or any) shifts, but they can also just not offer any others either. It works both ways.

Ilikewinter · 07/06/2023 18:38

Sod that for a game of soldiers. I would bet you could walk into another job tomorrow OP. Dont let them walk all over you. If you are in a position to Id start being awkward and saying for example wc 19th june you are only free mon and tues. They wont like it though.

museumum · 07/06/2023 18:41

I’d first assume it’s not personal and somebody just wants to save a bit of money and thought it was quiet at that time. They won’t be thinking about your school drop off routine.
As others say, you probably could find work elsewhere so go and speak to them and ask for what you need.

huuskymam · 07/06/2023 18:47

My 19 year old was on a zero hour contract with the local theatre during college. It works both ways, no set days, some weeks he didn't get any hours, some weeks he got loads, and some weeks he turned down hours cause he had something else planned. His boss actually tried to force him to do a day that he turned down,, quoting the contract saying she could give him any and all hours but he turned it on her and pointed out the contract said he could turn down hours. Have a look at yours, though it might be different if you've got set days.

If you’re on zero hours contract then you’re quite within your rights to tell them you’re no longer available on a Sunday - but, be prepared for them to tell you in return that they no longer need you on your weekday shift as a way to manage you out.

So, if you are going to do this, it may be worth waiting until you’ve found other work to fill those hours!

WhatFlavourIsIt · 07/06/2023 18:53

It's not wrong to be upset at the change without discussion but it's also not wrong that they schedule you according to the needs of the business. If the days / hours no longer work for you then look for something else.

Danikm151 · 07/06/2023 18:57

On a zero hours contract you can state you are unavailable on x days. The downside is they can give you 24 hours notice to say there are no hours for you

BeaLola · 07/06/2023 18:57

Did they say why only you didn't get a share of the Team Leader role ?

I would like to hope it's an oversight and they are thinking it's not busy then so they don't heed you to x hour .

I would be looking elsewhere though & as others have said zero hours works both ways so you can decline shifts - if they are doing it deliberately they may then offer you even less

gamerchick · 07/06/2023 19:03

Find something else me just quit. It's not worth it.

EyUpThereLass · 07/06/2023 22:28

Nothing was explained. No chat with me as to why I was considered to be a team leader, no discussion about my hours being cut it was just put on the online rota.. nothing x

OP posts:
EyUpThereLass · 07/06/2023 22:28

Wasn't considered*

cocunut · 07/06/2023 22:37

Haha. Classic hospitality power tripping managers. How DARE you want a Sunday off?
The way this industry treats their staff absolutely boils my piss OP.
