Im (relatively) new.

Why are people so anti reverse? I think its a useful way to get input from both sides of the picture? (I have not done this but definitely considered prior to realising the depth of contempt for it).

I havent advanced searched this (which I understand is also loathed if used to read previous posts to help aid responses, SO MANY RULES), so please forgive me if I am rehashing, but I genuinely dont get it.

OP posts:
StressyMcStressFace · 07/06/2023 12:55

Is this a reverse?

Softoprider · 07/06/2023 12:55

Because it is duplicitous and a lie?

TeenDivided · 07/06/2023 12:59

Advanced searches can be used to gain understanding of the pros and cons of reverses. (Mainly it is hard to put the other side accurately, also when you declare it is a reverse it gets confusing in the thread.)

What is less acceptable is advanced searching a poster in order to pull her apart of minor insignificant details.

It's annoying to spend time replying to a thread which turns out to be untrue.

It's especially annoying (and worse than annoying) when the thread concerns a sensitive matter where the people replying are sharing personal experiences and have engaged emotionally with the story as told. (Of course any thread on here could be bollocks, it's just extra irritating when the OP announces it.)

It's manipulative.

KrisAkabusi · 07/06/2023 13:03

Because no matter what you try, it's impossible to write things from the other point of you. You don't know what was happening in the other person's head so your biases will be present and affect how you present things.

Frabbits · 07/06/2023 13:03

Because it's fucking irritating at best and deeply manipulative to get the answer you want at worst. Y'know, the people who just want confirmation that they are right rather than actually being interested in other opinions.

sourcorn · 07/06/2023 13:05

I dont like them in AIBU personally coz about 1 or 2 pages in the reversal gets revealed and then the whole aibu vote gets skewed

sourcorn · 07/06/2023 13:05

Also I find posters find it hard to post a truly u biased reverse

HoldingTheDoor · 07/06/2023 13:06

It's not useful. It's the opposite of useful especially as they're always going to spin it to make themselves sound as reasonable as possible.

But I do feel that there are some scenarios that MN have very strong biases against, which means some people arent getting a fair hearing from the offset. I can see why people do this to try and get some perspective that isnt tainted by prior judgement?

I can understand this.

Meeting · 07/06/2023 13:08

Because it's annoying.

The OP will reveal halfway through that it's a reverse but there will be pages and pages of people responding to the original post.
Then more pages of people telling said posters that's it's a reverse.

It's usually completely unnecessary and people could have quite easily given opinions based on a factual OP. If they want to be unbiased (which they never are, usually quite the opposite in fact) then they should do the "person A did .. person B did... Who is BU" type of thing.

PleasantOwl · 07/06/2023 13:09

It’s dishonest and manipulative, and annoying.

FloweryName · 07/06/2023 13:12

Because people post from their own POV even though they think they’re not and it’s annoying.
