For context: I work at a youth club. I started in March and was guaranteed at least 6 hours a week (as I was employed for two 3-hour shifts) more at half-terms as we run whole day sessions during these weeks. My manager is also the owner of the company and we only have 6 staff in total. I am on an hourly rate of £10 (as I am 20)
The shifts have been erratic, to say the least, from the beginning. Although the hours have always been the same (15:30 to 18:30 on Tuesdays and 18:00 to 21:00 on Thursdays) the times that I get to work and leave have always been quite a bit before and after my shifts have started/ended. My manager has frequently told me to come in 30 mins to an hour early to sort out paperwork or have team meetings. I am also always expected to stay 45 minutes to an hour late every shift so that we can clean up and do group evaluation after. However, I have never been paid for this. When asked about this, my manager stated "it's nice of you to come in early/leave late, but we don't pay you to.". Is this even legal?
For anyone that will say "just don't come in early/leave late", it is not that simple. The whole team is paid for 30 minutes of setup and close before and after the club (it runs for 2 hours) so the manager expects us to do this AND do our group evaluation after, which is a mandatory procedure. However, it is taking 30 minutes to close, which means that the evaluation is basically unpaid. Instead of adding more time to our paid shift, the manager keeps telling us all to "just clean up faster", which is not possible with the amount of checklists being completed between 5, or sometimes even 3 if staff are ill, people.
Furthermore, my manager has also cut half of my hours without informing me at all. The Tuesday club was ended due to insufficient funds/attendees, and I only found out through a colleague a week later when my shift was due to start. This leaves me with only 3 hours a week, which is not what was promised in the interview. This happened about two months into the job. He has also randomly cut the Thursday club for that week one day before the shift and I have not been notified at all. I have to ask around to find out, or find out on social media where updates are posted for attendees.
Sorry if this was confusing or oddly worded, I am just at capacity with my manager's shitty communication and leadership skills and I don't know anything about overtime pay or legalities in general. I feel like my dedication has been taken advantage of and I've had no help. AIBU to be upset and just pissed off with the whole thing?
