If I open a thread, regardless of how interesting the topic appears from the title, I don't read it if the OP hasn't used paragraphs.

It's just not reader-friendly.

Poor spelling/grammar can be forgiven for a whole host of reasons, but breaking up a post into digestible sections ain't rocket science.

Obviously this only applies to posts of more than a few sentences.

Righto 😁

Nipping in to say Samsung devices can be terrors for reformatting and taking out paras. (Also inserting huge spaces on occasion, too). So it may not be the poster, HTH.

Niveaprincess · 06/06/2023 15:57

Ah, I didn't know that about Samsung devices.

Also, I suppose some posters are just spilling their thoughts and so paragraphs don't occur to them, especially if they're ranting or upset.

I personally struggle to read long pieces of text if they're not broken up. I'm assuming other Mumsnetters find it difficult too.

If I enter paragraphs on the app, they disappear.

I have to do a double line space.

Niveaprincess · 06/06/2023 16:09

I was being unreasonable.

I didn't consider formatting/device issues.

My bad.

I should not be so quick to judge! 😀

Have you tried getting help for poor comprehension skills?

Saucery · 06/06/2023 16:16

There’s lots of stuff I don’t read on here if the thread title draws me in but the substance doesn’t grab me.
Paragraphs or no paragraphs isn’t something that affects my comprehension of an OP, however.

Niveaprincess · 06/06/2023 16:18

I had additional literacy support in secondary school and study skills support throughout university.

Is there anything else you would recommend?

you wouldn't read my posts then op! my grammar is terrible due to a poor education although i can read and write I've no idea when or where I should use paragraphs.

Same here. You can usually tell if its a formatting issue versus a long winded rant just from other punctuation being used (or not).

Can you break up a big wall of text, even in the wrong places, or would you leave it as one? That's the difference.

And since autocorrect and fat fingers decided to rule the world most people ignore odd spelling mistakes or commas in the wrong place.

I agree!

Life is too short. If the post is not very easily comprehensible I'll just click onto something that is. It's up to the writer to spend time making their post readable, not the reader to decipher it. It's not like there's a shortage of trivia to read on the internet!

yes I would tend to break things up if I was writing a long post rather than it looking like a long huge wall of text. I've just no idea whether or not the paragraph is in the correct place!

ItsCalledAConversation · 06/06/2023 16:43

Can I put in special mention here for:

Posters who use “they” throughout a post for no apparent reason, unless the person being referred to is gender neutral, I find it confusing
Posters who say “gotten” instead of “got”
Posters who are FUMING with no trace of irony
Posters who put x after each post

Niveaprincess · 06/06/2023 16:49

theblackradiator - I think Pixiedust is right. Just breaking up the post here and there helps. I'm sure your posts read fine.

LardyDee - that's exactly it - if the post seems overwhelming from the outset, it may stop people from even starting to try and read it. This is a shame because the (potential) reader may have had something worthwhile to contribute.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda - I'm assuming you have no recommendations on help for people with 'poor communication skills' and you were just being personal?

ItsCalledAConversation - 'gotten' definitely gets to me too!

Again - my bad.
