To function ok on 6 hours or so of sleep/?

I'm usually a big sleeper but for long boring reasons I can only manage about 2am-8am to tonight (family emergency kept me up helping someone), and I have a big work event to take part in tomorrow. I'm pretty well rested and healthy, is tomorrow going to be a write off or would IBU in thinking one night won't knock me off too much?!

That is probably my normal night and I can get by- it’s not great but you will be ok.

ThePoint678 · 06/06/2023 00:42

You will be fine!

BonnieGlasses · 06/06/2023 00:42

You'll be fine as it's just one night.

gorillalala · 06/06/2023 00:42

I'll probably sleep less than that tonight (and regularly do) and I'll be fine, though lots of my friends wouldn't 😀

As a one-off I'm pretty sure you'll be fine!

BreviloquentBastard · 06/06/2023 00:45

This very much depends on the person I think. I average 5-6 hours a night, I've never been a great sleeper and I function fine during the day. My husband however needs his full 8-9 hours. If he gets less than 7 he's a useless sack of potatoes the next day no matter how much coffee he drinks.

Hopefully you'll be fine as a one off!

Outofthepark · 06/06/2023 00:59

Thanks all, I feel a bit more positive now!

what?

of course it will be fine.

Whyisitsosohard · 06/06/2023 01:03

You'll be fine, I've a newborn and am getting 6 hours broken sleep a night and best and function fine in the day. Even doing work (part time) that requires quite a lot of cognitive processing.

BreadInCaptivity · 06/06/2023 01:06

6 hours is pretty normal for me.

I function fine.

I think you will survive one night!

DFWM · 06/06/2023 01:08

You will be fine. I regularly live off 5 hours tops, and I'm a mum to 2 kids and completing a degree. I even did 2 exams today on 4 hours sleep, yet here I am, still awake...

Blimey that's amazing! I shall be thinking of this at my work event tomorrow and telling myself not to be such a wuss 😄

Six hours is normal for me, I haven’t slept for eight hours in over twenty years.

TheDogthatDug · 06/06/2023 01:17

I sometimes work nightshifts and a lot of the time, unable to sleep during the day. I have many times been awake 48 hrs or more. I hate nights.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/06/2023 01:31

You didn’t leave a wedding early recently by any chance, did you?

Same for me. I aim to get six hours sleep but often manage on less.

DFWM · 06/06/2023 01:57

I wouldn't call it amazing really, you just adjust. Even when I can fall asleep, I wake up every 20-30 minutes. It sucks, it's draining, but I have got used to it now.

Would kill to be able to sleep through the night, even if just for 4 hours straight! I have found disturbed sleep a lot harder to adjust to than the lack of hours.

Marshmallowmountain · 06/06/2023 02:10

isn’t 6 hours the standard amount for an adult?! I’m sure you’ll be fine OP 🤔

IAmAnIdiot123 · 06/06/2023 02:10

What is the alternative? Calling in sick because you didn't get to sleep until 2am but slept through to 8am?

That's a dream for a lot of people!.

DogOutInTheDark · 06/06/2023 02:15

I'm sure you'll be fine! It's about 2am now and I'm off to bed soon! Back up again at 6:30! So we will be in a similar boat OP!

I love sleep, but there are never enough hours in the day for me to finish everything to actually get to my bed!! I live on coffee and chocolate. My poor heart :(

(forgive what I'm about to say, it is meant light hearted and I'm tired ...) ... Damn those feminists of the past! If I'd lived in the 50s I would not be working and could go to bed nice and early (having fed the DH and tucked in the children. Which I do anyway. On top of a million other things and full time job!!!!😁😁 Who the hec thought this would be a good way to live?!)

Babyenroute · 06/06/2023 02:18

I would love six hours of sleep! Currently functioning on far less due to baby who doesn't sleep. Sadly haven't had more than two hours solid sleep for the past 4 months which I know isn't healthy but I do function!

Oh gosh! I remember those days!! I was feeling sorry for myself just now thinking 'oh no, only 4 hours sleep!' but then you reminded me of baby nights!!! Pure hell!!

Good luck!! You'll get through it! My 9 yr old sleeps 11 hours unbroken 😁 so there's light for you at the end of the tunnel!

NaturalStudy · 06/06/2023 02:36

Ha @WomanStanleyWoman2 . That's what sprung to my mind too.

I work in a profession where its common to work until 11pm/12am/1am everyday and be back in the office for 9am the next day and I am constantly baffled by these kinds of threads.

You ll be fine OP. There will be lots of people at your work who have had less sleep than you. Good luck.

Outofthepark · 06/06/2023 07:24

Thank you everyone, I'm clearly being a wuss and need to suck it up a bit 😄, also I have realised from this thread how lucky I usually am to get so much sleep, and I'm extremely impressed by how everyone copes! Many thanks for your answers they've helped a lot. I think I was thrown a bit by how important this work day is (major presentations etc) but as you all rightly say, it's just one night, and so many people routinely have to get by on these kinds of hours.

@WomanStanleyWoman2 sadly no wedding, it was helping an elderly relative 🙂

I never have more than that I function well (Ermmmm ish)

Lostmyway86 · 06/06/2023 07:27

For me it's not about how many hours, but how many solid hours. In the brutal days of babies and sleep deprivation I found if I had 4 hours straight sleep I could function just fine. Now they sleep through the night 6 is my average, 7 is wonderful and 8 I feel on top of the world!
