To tell you how amazing he is!!!

Sorry this is probably such a ridiculous post. I just feel so emotional and had to tell someone!

my horse is absolutely amazing.

I took him out for a hack today and he was being a bit of a daft lad (typical!). He’s not normally spooky or bothered by traffic but he was acting like a youngster and spooking at nothing and kept napping to go home to his pals! He’s a good boy but very smart and has a cheeky side although that’s what I love most about him. We hacked on a country road until we reached our bridle path. It’s mainly used by dog walkers now as there aren’t many horses using it anymore, but it still remains a bridle path and for horses and there are signs up everywhere that dogs should be on leads and there may be horse riders etc.

My boy was being feisty but not bad, just very excited (he’s an OTTB, that explains it!!) and it was difficult enough to control him, and out of nowhere a dog off the lead came bounding up to us. I know it sounds a MN cliche but it was one of those giant bully breeds, an XL bully I think. It came running up without an owner insight and I was absolutely terrified. It was circling my horse and snarling and running up and sort of snapping but not biting. At one point it bit his tail and ripped part out. It also grabbed our saddle pad and pulled it down and ripped the corner off. I was absolutely terrified- it was like being circled by a Shetland pony sized dog and I thought my horse was going to either rear, buck or take off (or all 3) and he’s a 17hh lad so it’s a long way to fall off. Not to mention the dog would probably have attacked me if I did end up on the ground.

but my horse didnt do that. He could tell I was absolutely terrified and he just stood there not putting a foot wrong. He didn’t bat an eyelid as the dog snapped at him or jumped on his hind or legs. He just stood there like an absolute angel. He could 100% tell I was frightened and that it would be bad if I ended up on the ground and he looked after me.

eventually the owners caught up and tried to grab the dog but it knocked her off her feet and was determined to circle and clearly intimidate my horse. But he just stood there not bothered. eventually they grabbed the dog and shouted at me that she’s not used to dogs and how I shouldn’t be there etc and that my horse could have kicked and injured her dog 🙃

but I was so so proud of my boy. He trotted off happily afterwards and was clearly proud of himself. He understood how scared I was and looked after me when he would have been more than justified to go crazy. He is getting extra treats and cuddles tonight and I’m so so proud of him (and also terrified at the near miss and how badly today could have gone)

He's a fabulous boy ...extra treats and cuddles definitely! Amazing response from him. And look after yourself too, that sounds a terrible experience.

And those fucking dogs are evil! Couple them with clearly useless owners who shouldn't be near a gerbil and they're a tragedy waiting to happen.

jenandberrys · 05/06/2023 20:14

How terrifying. What stupid owners. So glad your boy looked out for you and kept you both safe :)

AnonyMenOhPee · 05/06/2023 20:15

What an incredible horse you have - now you know he will never do anything really naughty because if you can face that together you can face anything! I would make sure he has exposure to another dog asap though just in case - and report the dog to the dog warden for good measure. And post on all your local equestrian groups.

but most importantly just lots of hugs for your massive brave horse

MXVIT · 05/06/2023 20:17

I say this as a dog owner. What the fuck is the obsession with people having their dogs off lead at all opportunities ! When did we move to this being the default!!

Mine is off for 10 mins at the most in either empty secure fields or remote parts of the beach, I'd never ever let him off in any place even slightly public

Well done to your gorgeous boy!

007DoubleOSeven · 05/06/2023 20:18

That's wonderful 😊

Ottb =? Over the top bastrd? 😆

Pixiedust1234 · 05/06/2023 20:20

Hes a rock star! ❤

I would report that dog and owner as soon as possible, its going to end up badly for someone else if thy aren't stopped.

JamSandle · 05/06/2023 20:20

What a legendary horse! You sound like a great team.

MadamNoo · 05/06/2023 20:22

How amazing of him, but how terrifying. There’s a horrible video of a police horse being attacked by one of these dogs in a london park and almost brought to its knees a couple
of times, you had a lucky escape and the owner should have grovelled to you.

Myangelhorse · 05/06/2023 20:23

Thank you so much everyone!

I also meant to add, there was a stream beside us and there were lots of flies and a cloud of flies were swarming us too. Usually he would have been agitated by this but I’ve never seen anything like it, he wasn’t bothered at all even though they were crawling and buzzing round his face and body. he really is a 1 in a million horse.

Im a dog lover and I honestly thought the MN dislike with XL bully’s was OTT and that in the right hands they were acceptable dogs to keep as pets. This has made me realise how wrong I was. That was not a dog suitable for a pet under any circumstances- its head was absolutely massive and it’s shoulders were completely solid. I’ve never seen anything like it before but I was absolutely terrified of it. It knocked over its own owner and was completely out of control. I’m sure they are loving and loyal and nice dogs under the right circumstances but it was built like a tank and could easily have taken down my horse who isn’t exactly small either. Sorry to everyone who likes them but it was absolutely terrifying

Hahaha you bet! 😂

he was being a nappy bugger before that and I admit I had said under my breath “can you just stop being a complete tit for once in your life!” Just before it all happened- feel very bad for saying that now as he literally just saved my life! 😆 he was so proud of himself afterwards, he was prancing and trotting with his ears up and he knew he had been a good boy!❤️

absolutely furious- just realised how much of his tail was ripped, our saddle pad is completely destroyed and worst of all my horse was actually nipped and broke the skin on his back leg- I hadn’t realised it when I first made this post but when I groomed him and gave him a check over at the yard I noticed he was bleeding. I’m absolutely livid, why are some dog owners so bloody stupid.

Please report it to the police.

They are a terrible breed. There are two in my village and I don't like the look of them at all. Built like brick shithouses.

What a fantastic horse you have, he sounds like one in a million.

SuperbSummer2023 · 05/06/2023 21:46

@Myangelhorse

what a great boy you have!!

you need to report the incident. They are lovely dogs with the right owners! She's clearly not 'a right owner'. Better than some, but not good enough.

dudsville · 05/06/2023 21:47

Your poor horse. I don't know horses but what you describe is a very moving moment when he absolutely protected you from what must certainly would have been a much worse outcome. The owner of that dog should be reported. Of course it's too late, but I was gripped by your account and very moved and livid along side you.

I'm a dog owner but this is disgusting behaviour from the dog owner. You need to report this to the dog warden and the police

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 05/06/2023 22:13

That’s amazing, your horse is a legend. He saved your life. I’ve seen one of these types of dogs once, it was straining at its lead and I was quite scared by it, absolutely huge and like a bloody tank! It wasnt being aggressive but I can see how a dog that size and with that kind of strength could take down a large horse. I hope your wonderful horse is ok.

PimpMyFridge · 05/06/2023 22:25

Wow! The dog owner blamed you!!!

Your amazing horse! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Incredible. 🐴🐴🐴

JMSA · 05/06/2023 22:28

Oh my GOODNESS, I am not even a horse fan in particular, but your horse is 100% wonderful and amazing.
You must be so, so proud.

JMSA · 05/06/2023 22:31

Oh no, just read the update about his injury following the dog attack Sad I'm so sorry Flowers

Pixiedust1234 · 06/06/2023 00:05

I'm sorry to hear your update. Please report it.

And give your hero an extra sugarlump or two (or polomint or carrot) from us❤

Toxicityofourcity · 06/06/2023 01:30

What a legend 🐎 ❤️ Definitely report this, the poor guy and how terrifying for you both x
