Hi, there is a couple who keep walking onto my driveway as part of their walk, they stand there loitering, come right up to my garage, walk around car, and look through windows etc. They then go. They look abit strange, and this is scaring my young dcs who sometimes play there, and become startled. They are older and I think harmless enough, but we don't like it. It is odd behaviour as my driveway is enclosed and there's no walkway or anything, it is a dead end if that makes sense.
What do I do? Because they are older I feel abit awkward saying anything, but at the same time it is trespassing on private property, they have no business being here.

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants 😂we are obviously all sinners that have lost our way, who need this literature as a matter of urgency.

They haven't knocked or posted anything, but maybe retired as a pp said. Also they seem to target mine and my nbr's houses specifically and purposefully making a beeline, while glancing at rest. We are obviously the biggest sinners! 🤣

I was going to say JW but legally they are spoiling the enjoyment of your property
It's not rude to open the door and ask if they need help
Whatever they reply you could say
" I'd rather you didn't as you're disturbing my children"

FloofCloud · 05/06/2023 17:14

Weird and possible they're casing the joint!
Definitely be polite but firm too, no wavering just no thank you, and on your way now. You could say you and the neighbours have footage of them

I’m loving the idea that older people can get away with anything by virtue of being old and “harmless”. I’m going to start planning a heist. Everyone will say “Well, gosh! She was such a sweet old dear! Who’d have thought she would go all Breaking Bad!”

Gangster Granny 😆

MermaidEyes · 05/06/2023 17:20

They posted some through my door the other day :( Completely ignoring the No Junk Mail sign on my letterbox!

We had a handwritten letter posted through a while ago. DH sent a very sharply worded email and they were very contrite and apologetic in their reply 😂

OhnoItHappeningAgain · 05/06/2023 17:21

@StevieNicksfan that's a good idea, and i guess if they're not it'll hopefully ward off the actual ones.

Hard to say exactly but id guess every week around 2/3 times.

I don't think they'll notice subtle cues such as no loitering signa etc for them to leave. I think i'll have to talk to them as see why they are choosing to walk there and then stop and daydream in a trance, lurking around.

Just because they are older, doesn't mean they are not rude, entitled knob heads. We had a neighbour like this when we lived in the suburbs, he used to LOVE bin day. Putting your bins back for you was a great excuse to wander around your driveway and peer in through windows and he even let himself in by our side gate once and started wandering around our garden. I worked from home so I was out like a shot and told him to clear off. He looked very hurt and said, "But I brought your bin in for you." I pointed out that I didn't ask him to and it didn't give him an excuse to trespass and that he was never, ever to bring my bin in again. He wandered off and left us alone after that but still did it to the other neighbours.

Wicksytricksy · 05/06/2023 17:28

Flash them?

Or just ask them what they're doing....

CC4712 · 05/06/2023 17:31

If you are too scared to even speak to them, a well timed sprinkler system would work too 😂

@ZeroFuchsGiven i can use my voice, i just didn't want to be awful. The other nbr jas said they're a "harmless old couple." I was scared i was overeacting, and just wondering if other would be irritated by it.

Why would it be awful just to wander out and ask them if you can help them?

OhnoItHappeningAgain · 05/06/2023 17:36

@krustykittens oh my goodness, what was he doing wandering around your backgarden aside from the bin?!
Yes, their age shouldn't matter. I haven't said anything because of their age which in itself is age-ist!

OP posts:
OhnoItHappeningAgain · 05/06/2023 17:39

@Kiwano because they'll just chat and prob say they're just out walking or sight seeing 🤔
I'm going to reply as a pp suggested politely telling them it is private property, but to have a lovely day.

He just wanted to have a nose! The bin was the perfect excuse to come wandering in. I watched him on bin day and he didn't bring everyone's bin in, just people who looked like they were getting work done or had a new car, etc. He would wander up and down, pick a place that intrigued him and then wheel their bin in. Most people didn't realise, because they were at work. We had not long moved in and had done quite a lot of work. It became a war of attrition for awhile, because he kept hanging around and a couple of times I actually had to take my bin off him and tell him to get off my drive, so I would wait on bin day and the minute my bin hit the pavement, I was out to get it! Petty? Yes, but his entitlement drove me insane. And I like my privacy.

I think you could perform a eurovision song contest full rendition infront of them, and they wouldn't notice!
I'll be ready for their "just out walking dog" reply.

@krustykittens what a cheek, and how nosey! You could have got such a shock if you were relaxing in your garden etc. I think these individuals have nothing else to do other than lurk around.

EekGoesTheBaby · 05/06/2023 19:37

Yes, some great replies on here, polite but setting a (literal) boundary. They are very rude to walk on your property and even ruder to peek in windows. Older people? Then they've had plenty of time to learn some manners!

whynotwhatknot · 06/06/2023 11:09

Did they come back today?

But that doesn't make it awful?
