Ozempic works in exactly the same way in diabetics as in the overweight. It slows food leaving the stomach and reduces the appetite so, if the overweight should just eat less, then so could the diabetics
@Murdoch1949 The current Drug Tariff price is around £73 plus fees so, while lower, I wouldn't call it "a fraction of the price"

"Doubtless you are getting your moneys worth out of the cash-strapped NHS whereas I am putting my money where my mouth is - literally."

"So lets not hear the argument about 'I paid for it so I demand it,' again. We have ALL paid."

I think if you re-read your posts @teddyandgypsy you'll see it was you who was inferring that you paying private makes you more deserving.

This isn't about your views on the NHS or about your private insurance. This is the OP trying to get access to medication that is very difficult to get at the moment - hence my point that we need to source more production if the off label usage continues at this level.

Given your arguments with 90% of posters on this thread, it's clear you find this issue very contentious - I'm sure we can both agree that something needs to be done to support those who have been prescribed the medication and are now struggling to source or find alternatives.

Good luck OP.

Weightlossuk has some 0.5mg in, you just have to check daily.

Ive discovered how effective 16/8 is for me so I've managed to ditch the Ozempic, thankfully because it's a fucking fortune now.

DinosaurFarmer · 08/08/2023 11:51

I'm in the same boat - diabetic and need to take it but can't get it anywhere due to people buying it for weight loss. Think it should be ring fenced for those of us who clinically need it.

My pharmacist can't even order it now, have tried a dozen or more other pharmacies including online with no joy. My diabetic nurse then prescribed the oral version Rybelsus and guess what - also totally out of stock everywhere!

It's not right that people can't get the meds they actually need due to other people's selfishness and pharmaceutical companies greed!

tennesseewhiskey1 · 08/08/2023 11:52

Yikes - sorry OP. I understand how frustrating and scary it must be. My friend who is a Dr concurs that there is a shortage now that so many are using it for weight loss :-(

HunkMarvin · 08/08/2023 14:12

I know someone working in a diabetic clinic who says that when Ozempic was first approved in the UK, an extremely large portion of available stock was bought by private clinics for people who want to use it for weight loss. There has been a supply issue ever since and the nhs are really struggling to meet demand.

just heard on the grapevine, I can’t say whether it’s true. But I have heard so many accounts of people struggling to get it this explanation makes sense to me

annapfa · 22/08/2023 14:45

I spent a few days last week telephoning and visiting 23 different pharmacies to try to get Ozempic, which has been very successful for me in managing my type 2 diabetes.

I have now given up. None in stock anywhere and I can't take any more stress of ringing, explaining, and being turned down. I will have to manage without.

teddyandgypsy · 22/08/2023 18:07

You talk as if people buying it for weight loss are purchasing designer drugs. The majority are people determined to do something about their weight, precisely so that they DON'T get Type 2 diabetes.

There are many simple and effective ways of doing "something about their weight".

This is a drug which is extremely important to the treatment of diabetics- including those with type 1 who aren't in any way to blame for their illness, if we're going down that road.

teddyandgypsy · 22/08/2023 20:10

Ozempic is never prescribed for Type I diabetes. Overwhelmingly people with Type 2 have the illness because of poor diet. Nobody is blaming them for the choices they made, BUT neither should those of use who wish to control our diet precisely so that we do not get Type 2 be castigated. People with this type of diabetes can often reverse the symptoms by changing their lifestyle and eating patterns. Ozempic can certainly help and that is why those of use who might be at risk of diabetes are funding it themselves

AllyCart · 23/08/2023 13:05

Ozempic is never prescribed for Type I diabetes.

Thank you - I stand corrected.

TodayInahurry · 23/08/2023 13:08

I know two people using it for weight loss. There will be many more

countrygirl99 · 23/08/2023 13:40

T2 is genetic in my DHs family. His dad and all his brothers have it. That includes the ones that have never been overweight and the one who has always been downright skinny. I'm sure they'll be delighted to hear it's their own fault and tough luck they can't get the drugs they need to avoid minor issues like kidney damage, amputation and blindness for the condition that actually already have. DH is trying a different medication but is not doing very well on it and is having to double the dose after his consultation this week.

annapfa · 23/08/2023 17:05

When I commented yesterday on this thread I wasn't intending to restart a debate about who should have Ozempic and who shouldn't - it was meant just to answer the original question "where can you get Ozempic?" And the answer is that, going by my recent experience, that you can't.

For my own peace of mind I just have to accept that I was privileged to have it for nearly a year, but now it's gone, and I can't do anything about that. Worrying won't help, stress won't help, endless phone calls to pharmacies won't help. Look on the bright side - at least I won't be suffering the awful side-effects any more!😀

teddyandgypsy · 25/08/2023 09:54

You are right, it is pretty much unobtainable now and probably wont change until the middle of next year at the earliest. I must say you diabetics are a snippy lot. Obviously you feel you have a divine right to all the Ozempic stocks and that people wanting to lose weight are simply vain people selfishly stealing your medications. I am sure everybody wishes you well with your treatments and it is obviously good that Ozempic helps but, equally, many of us want to lose unhealthy weight precisely so that we don't become diabetic. Seems to me prevention is just as worthy as cure.

Cakesandbabes · 25/08/2023 10:12

Honeatly, some people are disgustingly self absorbed with "oh well my" prevention" is as important or even more than treatment".

Would you all say that to a diabetic if their medicine proved to help weightloss and it sold out? Or person with epilepsy? No.
Person with the condition the medicine is needed for should take precedent. That's just logical.

Prevention? Go on a diet and change what you eat like the rest of us did.

This is just like the glutenfree fad which made glutenfree stuff unavailable or expensive or a while.

What's next. Buying off digoxin?

Cakesandbabes · 25/08/2023 10:13

proved popular to help weightloss
Whichbwas supposed to be "became populat" 🙄 sorry

teddyandgypsy · 25/08/2023 13:58

No comparison. Ozempic is a commercial product available without prescription. The buying power of major health organisations is always greater than the power of the individual so there is no reason why it can't be purchased other than the fact that the solus manufacturer has chosen to send all available stocks to the USA. Diabetics managed before Ozempic and will have to do so again, like the rest of us. Clearly you have never used the drug because if you had you would no that it is simply a dietary aid and that without a controlled diet, it will have no effect at all.

annapfa · 25/08/2023 14:06

The comments I put on this thread were my first on this forum. What was I expecting? Some support, some information, some sympathy maybe? But no, just like everywhere else online, it is just another opportunity for people to be unkind to one another. I thought this would be different - such a disappointment.
