To find ChatGTP terrifying!

It seems like humans are just becoming redundant 😳

ChatGPT.

At the moment it’s a sophisticated autocorrect. It’s certainly impressive with what it can do, but anything it knows it learned from humans and the output still needs human guidance to make it not sound like AI. We are far from redundant (yet!)

Ardiaei · 04/06/2023 09:05

Not really. The more time you spend playing with it the more you realise all the things it can’t do.

It’s basically an advanced predictive text, nothing more.

greennotepad · 04/06/2023 09:05

I meant predictive text, not autocorrect! @Ardiaei is right.

DojaPhat · 04/06/2023 09:09

Ai is certainly a terrifying prospect - looking at things like Ai generated photo-realistic pictures and videos really has enormous potential to cause all manner of havoc but ChatGPT is pretty much just Wikipedia.

polkadotdalmation · 04/06/2023 09:19

I've been watching how it works with website building, and it looks like humans should just give up now. I hope it has limitations but it won't take more than a couple of years to iron out all its issues.

Sorry. My brain keeps saying GDP but replaces the D!

ChatGPT is great for starting a document or a conversation but all it's doing is amalgamating lots of internet search results in to one result.

I've played with it for things like policy documents and process guides, asking it to create an Environmental Sustainability policy mapped to ISO14001 standards, UN global compact and SDGs.

What I got was a really nice template that needed a lot of customisation and checking as the mapping wasn't accurate.

I've tried using it to respond to fake customer queries and it's Ok if it can source the right answer from our public FAQs but as soon as the question deviates on any way from those FAQs the answers start being irrelevant and too generic.

There's a phrase used in process/data mapping 'garbage in = garbage out' and that's one of the big problems with AI tools like chat GPT.

polkadotdalmation · 04/06/2023 09:20

If it's like chat bots it's good but not perfect 😊

I was playing with it yesterday, getting it to write poems, stories and plays. It's probably around the level of a 12 year old but with a bit of coaxing it produced perfectly adequate scripts. I expect it will force "creatives" to be more creative so they stand out from the AI generated stuff, which will only be a good thing.

TreadLight · 04/06/2023 09:33

As a test I just used it to write a description to put on an eBay for a niche product. It needed correcting on a couple of things, but I think it is better than many eBay adverts and certainly was quicker to write.

CindersAgain · 04/06/2023 09:35

Yeah it can’t do references!

I use for starting project plans etc. it’s pretty helpful just to get going.

tommika · 04/06/2023 09:46

@polkadotdalmation
Ask ChatGPT who the prime minister is or who the monarch is

Then if the answer isn’t what you expected tell it that it might be mistaken and that it may need to double check

You can then spend as long as you would like to arguing with Artificial Stupidity …… ChatGPT was ‘educated’ in 2021, and that is the extent of its knowledge

BriarHare · 04/06/2023 09:52

I have used it to re-write a couple of reports and a concluding statement and found it useful. My son used it when writing a personal statement on a job application. So far, so good.

CherryCokeFanatic · 04/06/2023 09:53

Yes there will minimal admin or clerical jobs in the future

Fairislefandango · 04/06/2023 09:56

I'm a teacher and was intrigued to see how good a model A Level MFL literature essay it could produce in response to an exam question. Answer: a perfect one. Probably better than I could do.

polkadotdalmation · 04/06/2023 10:51

I remember garbage in, garbage out, and 'validate the data' from my GCSE computer studies 😂

Terrifying. It's obvious coursework and dissertations are under pressure.

If ChatGPT scares you, don't watch "The AI dilemma". It will utterly terrify you.

ReadtheReviews · 04/06/2023 11:15

I asked it how dogs could be useful to robots (to plant the idea that ai needs to keep dogs around Grin) and it was all nice answers like learning empathy and emotions and how to relate to other animals and navigate tricky terrain like stairs, until it said, dogs could sometimes be replaced by robot dogs in situations which were unsuitable for dogs. Humph.

It's a good thing that humans are needed for more than write crap for the Internet then.

But its got a long way to go even to replace written work. It's got a certain style that's too wordy, easy to spot and really irritating once you've seen it a few times.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/06/2023 11:41

until it said, dogs could sometimes be replaced by robot dogs in situations which were unsuitable for dogs. Humph

But they've been doing that for decades, eg searching hazardous environments, so nothing new.

LemonSwan · 04/06/2023 11:49

We were talking about this today. It is big. I look at my one year old and don’t know what it’s going to mean for them.

I watched Barack Obama’s series on Netflix about the world of work. It was super interesting and AI came into it.

The final conclusion basically boiled down to ‘we all think AI is going to kill us’ but no it’s more likely we will kill each other because AI will remove our purpose and meaning in life and will lead to us trying to find meaning and purpose elsewhere, likely in the ever increasing cultural and social divides.

Scary times indeed.

I find the two main accessible AI programs discriminatory and that worries me. Thin end of the wedge. If you have non-mainstream views beware.

That desert island looks more attractive every day

Discriminatory in what way and what non-mainstream views.

Would need an understanding of what you mean by these to 'beware'.

As somebody who works with AI in the IT industry, this wave of AI is the biggest shift since the internet itself. ChatGPT is just the tip of the iceberg.

It will be a technological revolution, and the workforce will be rearranged but certainly not at all redundant.
